Noel_Skum,

Historically speaking I imagine that’s true. I’m not sure why anyone felt the need to “correct” the word in the first place. Especially if it transpires they did so incorrectly…

Noel_Skum,

Opiates include artificially lab-constructed products that are based off of the opium that comes from poppies.

Noel_Skum,

Yeah. Pretty much. The original quote by Marx would’ve been in German I assume - which might make a difference. Looking at the US’s painkiller problems “opiate” is possibly more relevant. It’s a negligible difference either way. (Unless a linguist knows better)

Noel_Skum,

Yeah, that’s true, but in the UK XL Bullies specifically have been doing all the maulings recently that have generated serious press coverage; also they themselves have just been added as the sixth (?) banned canine breed in the UK.

Noel_Skum,

I’m not sure… I believe some instances do. I don’t know the difference between defederation and blocking. I just tried the lemm.ee web address and searched “all” and nothing porny turned up. Maybe there’s an nsfw filter you need to turn off? I’m not sure; but I do know there’s a tonne of porn here, somewhere. Good luck tracking it down.

Noel_Skum,

And I’m here surrounded in porn that I didn’t go looking for… perhaps some instances don’t handle NSFW?

Noel_Skum,

I’ve often wondered how many traditionally Republican people couldn’t bring themselves to vote for Trump versus how many people gravitated towards voting Republican for the first time because of his proclamations. Ultimately, did Trump bring more voters or lose more voters for the party he represented?

Noel_Skum,

The problem here is that no matter how much you hate Trump and his grift policies are you really ready to suggest that just under half of your voting age adults nationwide all have the same (low) intelligence? That would not seem to reflect well on your compatriots either when you calculate averages, means and medians.

Noel_Skum,

Good numbers. Thank you. Between your answer and somebody else I think we’re currently at about six in ten eligible voters voting of which about three voted Trump so about thirty percent of active US voters all share the same baseline of stupidity. (According to this meme’s cannon) Still seems big numbers, an inordinately large cluster, but I’m no expert. (I’m now tempted to find out how many people are “unregistered non-voters” (?) that could legally become enfranchised and see how that affects the numbers again)

Noel_Skum,

Unfortunately, yeah, man’s not wrong. I know there’s supposedly some quote attributed to a US President about him being unhappy that half the population is below average intelligence and wanting something done about it… if true that’s a real smh moment.

Noel_Skum,

I’m used to politicians being corrupt, hypocritical, dishonest, out of touch, naive etc. but I hoped they’d never become stupid/insane and yet…

Maybe in the future your parents will get a presidential candidate they actually want to vote for but It’s nice to know that in an age of vitriol and misinformation there are adults looking at the bigger picture and making a pragmatic choice. Good on them.

Noel_Skum,

Did not almost 50% of the 60% that voted vote Trump? I was under the impression that the overall vote count was reasonably close.

Noel_Skum,

Yeah, sorry, my bad. Thanks for reminding me - I sometimes forget that it’s now the cyber-hydra we’ve inherited rather than a platform for discussion and harmless entertainment. I’ll try and remember to wind my neck in.

Noel_Skum,

The irony of that comment has really tickled me. Thanks internet stranger. Best of luck to you for the future. Good bye. 👋

Noel_Skum,

“Chosen to be a slut instead of a mom.” Wow. I’ve heard some madness in my time but that is a magnificent sentence that says so much more about the speaker than it ever could about you.

Noel_Skum,

Selfishness, ignorance, lack of empathy, inability to see more than one perspective, misogyny, the “Well, I’m alright, Jack.” mentality, and the ability to ignore all the evidence in order to maintain my own personal view are just some of the tactics I’m employing right now to openly disbelieve what you tell me is your own personal lived experience. Glad I could mansplain explain that for you. s/

Qualified experts of Lemmy, do people believe you when you answer questions in your field?

The internet has made a lot of people armchair experts happy to offer their perspective with a degree of certainty, without doing the work to identify gaps in their knowledge. Often the mark of genuine expertise is knowing the limitations of your knowledge....

Noel_Skum,

Tbh my brain immediately gave me a fifty-fifty. Say what you want about Bezos but, in my head, he’s more of a Cruella than a Karen. I then guessed the lady in the post was talking about the other space guy. I don’t blame you drawing a temporary blank, new names and all that.

Noel_Skum,

I read an article about a (white) guy born in - maybe - Zimbabwe but definitely Africa. He moved to the US and his school had a scholarship / fund for African-Americans. He was the only pupil that qualified so applied for a laugh. Can’t remember how it ended.

I’d like to think that “Spaceship Karen” doesn’t find the phrase funny - but being such a glorious champion of free speech he’ll just have to suck it up.

Noel_Skum,

The African-American guy who won’t shut up and also killed Twitter.

Noel_Skum,

In the interests of checks and balances it’s worth noting that the Secretary of State should only recommend from a list of people provided by the Privy Council. And yes, in my opinion too, politically appointing judges is absolute insanity for a number of reasons.

Noel_Skum,

So when (if) the Conservative Party fail to win an absolute majority at the forthcoming general election and a new party (parties) form the government what effect will that have on BBC productions and editorial policy? How will I detect these government controlled shifts in output? Will all the (current) government planned and controlled content be immediately shelved and the new government will only show repeats / reruns until new propaganda is produced?

Noel_Skum,

The liberal BBC with a Tory bias? That’s really funny… but sadly I’m pretty sure some people won’t get the joke.

Noel_Skum,

The leaders of the opposition and the third party are not Tories, none of the governments of Wales, Scotland nor Northern Ireland are Tory. The church leaders aren’t Tories and nor are the judges. Under these circumstances it’s quite hard to stack the deck entirely in your own favour. Plus, even if everybody in the privy council was Tory they’d still not be able to agree on anything anyway.

Noel_Skum,

No. It’s just that at the birth of British political parties the Whigs (liberals) were the opposition to the Tories. A liberal institution having a Tory bias would be as likely as a vegetarian society having a meat eating bias. The sentence op posted is an oxymoron.

Noel_Skum,

Correct. Mostly senior politicians of ALL major parties ( so that could theoretically be a mix of tories, labour, snp, lib-dem, dup, sinn fein, plaid, green, sdp (if anyone is still alive), independent etc.) across the floor of either House of Parliament; plus some religious leaders, some British and also non-British judges and a few other people. Bit of a mixed bag because if all your advisors agree on everything you probably need new advisors.
