Well, I'm stuck at my dad's house for the day/night, hanging out and watching my nephew and the dogs. Nephew is using my laptop to play Minecraft, so I'm just keeping myself busy on my phone. Figured this enforced downtime was a good chance to post about something that happened a few weeks ago that I'm still analyzing and recovering from:
I had a panic attack on an airplane that was bad enough that I had to alert the crew.

A few years ago I wrote a tool for generating "pretty" silkscreen labels in EAGLE, which I called Buzzard (because buzzards are in the same family as eagles)

Then another developer, Greg Davill, added KiCad support which he then forked to "KiBuzzard," which is an excellent fork and apparently fairly popular?

And now, finally, it looks like we're moving to KiCad at work, so I have the go-ahead to spend work-hours writing PRs for Greg's fork!! I get to dev on a fork of my own plugin!

What do people on here think about SparkFun? I was asked if I knew anything about some OSHWA-related drama recently and I told Nate that in my corner of the internet (which I described as largely leftist, queer, proficient, and "maker"-averse) SparkFun is probably a close-second to Adafruit for US-based folks in terms of OSHW, but that we both represent a largely untrustworthy commercial interest so that nothing we do is either thrilling or disappointing. Am I right about that?

Hot take: Do whatever you want to old shit if it means you'll use it. Unless it has archeological value (It's the only/last of its kind, undocumented hardware, etc) then I'd much rather see a "vintage" computer with yellowed plastic and a big hole drilled in the side for a battery pack running someone's automated garden watering system or home automation than a pristine system powered off in a private collection. Don't get too precious about these mass manufactured tools.

I have no patience for "advice" with the tone of "I hate to burst your bubble," especially when it's just a jumble of inherited wisdom and folk knowledge that anyone with a whiff of experience in the field has already encountered.

Recently, a friend was asking for makeup advice, so I had reason to get into my makeup kit for the first time in a while. I've missed it! Maybe I'll get into that again. Like 5 or 6 years ago, I took a very brief run at being an Instagram makeup artist and then lost interest. I still have pics, though!

Just found out that my dad is having a stroke... on April Fool's day, which is a bad time to do that... not that there's a good time to do that.

I can't go to the hospital, it's too far away from my house... I'm letting my brother take my car.

I don't know what to do right now.

Glued up the sieve beds and buffer tank. It's going to bother me a lot that the beds are different heights because not all of the fittings bottomed out, but... that said, there's still plenty of interface for the cement, so they should hold pressure fine, they just won't be as pretty. Gonna let the glue set for 24 hours before I pack them with zeolite and attach the air fittings.

I have emailed 7 or so therapists in the state over the course of a few weeks and I have received one email in return to schedule a consult (which has not replied for 2 weeks since) and one unreturnable phone call with no one on the line. Abysmal.

In a Facebook group where someone just posted "I know I'm not the only one who doesn't like the trend of laptops using USB-C for power" and the discussion got so heated, so quickly, that the mods deleted the post 😂

Gender expression has always been kind of a moving target for me, because a big part of my identity seems to be reinvention. That said, a sort of post-human non-binary androgyny has always been the ideal, but it seems largely to be the domain of slender people with strong chins. Being built like I am, I feel like any attempt to feminize veers into the bad-bizarre, not good-bizarre.

I'm starting to come to terms with a vague idea of what I want, I just don't see any path from here to there.

So I guess I'm gonna do a blog? What's the hot blog framework these days? Ideally, blogposts would just be markdown files. No need (or desire) for a comment system. I don't want to install WordPress on another server.

I'm happy to build it from scratch but I figure this is a solved problem. Markdown preferred for Obsidian compatibility.

Does anyone else get numb tongue from eating fresh celery? I do, and I didn't know that it didn't happen to everyone! Apparently, it's not uncommon, though. Articles that I'm reading can't agree about whether it's a reaction to eugenol (also in ginger, cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, etc.) that's responsible or if it's an allergy to furanocoumourans that increase in concentration as the celery ages.

Hey. This is a bad idea. I don't know what the opposite of Public Health Work is, but it looks like this.

The thing that people who design these kinds of "solutions" fail to understand is that their incomplete "solution" is not better than nothing. It will not only attract people who are currently doing no STI screening, but will very likely intercept a large population of folks who would otherwise insist on proper STI screening, reducing overall safety.
