NovaSquirrel

@NovaSquirrel@chitter.xyz

I'm a hobbyist game developer who mostly focuses on old Nintendo consoles, but I've done projects on PC too.

I'm a furry and I like to make cute characters and also make games about them! Check out my Toyhouse to see my characters: https://toyhou.se/NovaSquirrel

I'd like to meet other people who like to do lighthearted, story-driven roleplay.

I post NSFW sometimes but I tag it, so please be 18+ if you follow.

Feel free to reach out if you have common interests and wanna be friends! [she/her]

Later today it's going to be Splatfest time and I'll get to be on a team for people who like rabbits, and that's going to be great

I feel like I've had more opportunities to roleplay lately, but I'm still kind of struggling to get an ongoing story going that's exciting to me like stuff I've gotten to do in the past. It seems hard to make up stuff on the spot to escape just characters idly talking to each other; I have tried a bit, though I have learned that things that are exciting to me aren't always things other people also care about.

I feel like it would help a lot to know more people with cute (ideally mascot aesthetic) characters with magic or cool powers, so we have a better chance of having something exciting happen. I know of a few but for most of them the people playing them have been unavailable for a long time.

This weekend there's supposed to be another event with food trucks but I have no idea what will be available. I'm excited to find out, and I'll actually be prepared this time.

The zoo is also opening pretty soon, and I'm excited for my first visit this year.

It'd be cool to see more people (or communities) try and make their own little hangouts online. Websockets make it really simple to have a basic chat app because they simplify everything down to the point where you can send and receive strings, and the client can just be a webpage.

Though I admit most people probably want features like a history, uploading images, or good handling for unreliable internet connections, and those aren't exactly trivial. I specifically wanted something where presence is meaningful and where everyone isn't just expected to be reachable all the time, myself.

@frost True, you don't necessarily have to do it Discord-style where you can scroll back through years of logs. In fact, being unable to do that can be a plus.

@zlago It's a protocol you can build other protocols on top of, and it handles things like compression and handling individual messages with a start and end.

Web browsers allow JavaScript to use it, and there's safeguards to make it so that you can't use that functionality to go make someone's browser send someone arbitrary traffic in an arbitrary protocol. You still need a server but the server code is a lot simpler than it would normally be.

@VAdaPEGA Yeah I guess making things work ok for phone connections isn't too bad, you just have to have it in mind as you design things (which IRC did not)

Having the characters in a TV show just suddenly start singing a song is really funny to me when I take it all at face value, where these characters who might have just met or may even hate each other just have this song ready to go about their current situation

Early on when I had just started having real opportunities to do story-driven roleplay, it was in a weird spot where pretty much all I could do was "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic" related, but now that I actually have several characters and some story ideas I want to use with that sort of setting it's become harder to find, so that's tricky

Maybe there's still MLP stuff out there somewhere that isn't NSFW and isn't strict about canon

NovaSquirrel,
@NovaSquirrel@chitter.xyz avatar

It's exciting to me to have characters explore unfamiliar worlds and interact with characters that live very different lives, which directly conflicts with strict canon.

For instance I've got https://toyhou.se/13812430.raspberry-dream who is specifically supposed to be a more traditional "advertising to kids" unicorn, and https://toyhou.se/7023744.sherbet/9869584.sherbet-pony where her secretly being a fox taur is a core aspect of how things work for her.

Looks like Whirled is actually open source? https://github.com/greyhavens/msoy

I remember checking it out ages ago but I don't think I actually got around to exploring it too deeply or making anything for it. I should check out the alternative servers people have made.

I have a few side accounts for roleplaying; feel free to reach out and interact with them: @PrincessNova @Sherbet @Clover
(Or just reach out if you're interested in my other characters I don't have accounts for, I guess?)

I have a private account for people I know well enough: @Maffi

Also check out https://novasquirrel.com/town/ which is my attempt at creating an open source roleplay/chat platform that's supposed to be like a modern, visual MU*; I'm on there pretty often.

I think all the really loud cars and motorcycles that drive by my house are actually illegal in my city but I'm not sure what I can do about them. I could try to file a noise complaint but it seems tricky to get a glimpse at the vehicle's license plate when I'm in my house.

I'm realizing that maybe popular accounts that post a lot of kink/transformation art and get a lot of engagement playing into it might have twisted my perception of what a normal amount of affirmation and attention actually is.

I think a complicated factor is that several of the people I've seen putting on this kind of persona are people I actually used to talk to and spend time with in the past before they drifted away (from me, but not with each other?), and I don't think I realized that you still have to watch out for parasocial stuff with people you have personally met and spent time with.

I definitely don't want to make my public image kink related, but I wish there were spaces where maybe I could get affirmation for being a rubber mouse girl or something, because it's really fulfilling (in a vaguely gender-y way?) but I just can't really seem to get people to engage with it very much. Maybe there's a way to do that without being like, an Influencer™ for fetish stuff

NovaSquirrel,
@NovaSquirrel@chitter.xyz avatar

@VAdaPEGA Oh, yeah I guess a lack of awareness would make sense. I should probably make a pinned post with all of my accounts and see if that helps.

NovaSquirrel,
@NovaSquirrel@chitter.xyz avatar

@SaapasJalka That's a good suggestion, though yeah for me that's a completely different kind of thing and I don't think it would do anything for me

I really need to figure out how to find friends in timezones similar to mine, because the current situation where I can't spend time with people unless I ignore my job or don't go outside is not good

You would think there would be more people in North America online

@foxiepaws I'm in Eastern, and I'm trying to meet more people who are available somewhere between 6 PM and 12 AM

While waiting for Cyberchase to come on I saw an episode of Hero Elementary where a character being autistic was treated as a positive thing (and a special interest helped out with solving a problem that popped up in the story) and I think it was handled respectfully. That was cool to see!

I'm playing with updating my old NES Dr.Mario clone after finally getting to play it with someone else showed that there's a lot of stuff that really needed fixed, or that could be better.

It felt cool to get to play a Dr.Mario that was fast though.

I feel like this game deserves to get to be its own thing and have enough polish that it stands on its own, instead of just being a little bonus in a different game. The amount of polish is kind of sad to look back at but I can fix it up now. I guess just giving it some distinct visual style past "simple looking graphics on top of a white background" would go a long way...

I've still been checking out the events calendars for Fort Wayne and I think it might finally be warming up to where there's going to be outdoor events with food trucks and stuff. I see there's one next weekend that explicitly says there will be food trucks, and I'm excited to check it out and find out.

I do notice a big problem where most local events seem like they're intended specifically for little kids, but sometimes I can find things that aren't.

I went and implemented an old idea for a Tilemap Town feature where you can specify an image to be a "wallpaper" for a map, which gets drawn over any place where the map's default floor type appears (or replacing all floors, if you want).

You can use it to have some fancy repeating terrain to build on, or just directly put a screenshot of a map from a video game into Tilemap Town that you can move around on with friends.
