How does one tell Czech railway infrastructure manager Správa železnic that their DNS is broken? I can’t email them for obvious reasons …

Oskar456,
@Oskar456@mastodon.social avatar

@partim I messaged them on X, but I doubt it will make it through the marketing staff to the responsible person. But it might, after all all 3 major MNO's validate DNSSEC so the domain name is invisible to a lot of people.

Oh look, the Západní expres actually used to run from Prague via Cheb to Frankfurt.

(This from the 1981 ČSD timetable as provided by the amazing Timetable World: https://timetableworld.com/ttw-viewer.php?token=ce85fa07-c828-4c50-9d78-323a0eddaa52)

@partim while starting December, the connecting train from Cheb to Nuremberg will depart 2 minutes before arrival of the train from Prague - and it will even not go all the way to Nuremberg 😉

My effort during IETF 118 hackathon got merged. Now you can use clatd by @tore not only with TAYGA user-space translator but also with nat46 kernel-space translator: https://github.com/toreanderson/clatd/commit/6d2ad96c2f89c86d6d93e1dfc83fd03045754e54

We are still far from the universal availability of CLAT on Linux, but at least we started to move.

It is pretty obvious that European Sleeper couchette cars are sourced from ŽSR. I wonder why they tried to remove the Slovak language from it.

Oskar456,
@Oskar456@mastodon.social avatar

@partim I have no clue. These seem to be registered to a Slovak branch of that German company - Gesellschaft für Fahrzeugtechnik

Oskar456,

@partim Oh! I always thought NS has some organisational unit in Belgium - and Germany - the D-NS ICE-3 units.

I was pretty shocked today what a terrible experience it is to run in on Windows. Is there a better free option? Perhaps VMware Player?

@sesivany if it is professional edition of Windows, try Hyper-V.

There’s currently a discussion in the Netherlands whether NS should be allowed to introduce a peak hour surcharge. While ostensible about pushing demand to less busy hours, I think it really is just an attempt of a fare increase. For most regular users, peak hours are already two thirds (!) more expensive (there’s a 40% off-peak discount for 5.60 a month) and yet peak hour trains are still packed. You’d have to conclude that moving demand via pricing doesn’t work in a commuting-heavy context.

Oskar456,
@Oskar456@mastodon.social avatar

@partim My employer reimburse commuting by train in full, first class. Most of my colleagues therefore don't care about traveling in or outside the peak hours nor are willing to get any subscription at all.

But if they implement peak surcharge as a real surcharge, not as a rise of basic fare, this maight at least push back some causal riders using OV-pay who now have to pay full fare all day long.

Does the Dutch delay compensation scheme also work if you start your journey an hour later because of them infamous herstelwerkzaamheden (whatever that means) or only if you get stuck half way? Asking for, well, me.

Oskar456,
@Oskar456@mastodon.social avatar

@partim the answer is: No. If you are not checked in, they will not compensate for anything. If you check in, find out the trains are not running and cancel check in, then you will likely get such a claim denied first, but if you dispute it and wait around 6 weeks for a human to read your case, they will compensate.

Oskar456,
@Oskar456@mastodon.social avatar

Oskar456,
@Oskar456@mastodon.social avatar

@sesivany To zní rozumně.

Oskar456,
@Oskar456@mastodon.social avatar

Oskar456,
@Oskar456@mastodon.social avatar

A kategorie C1 obsahuje onen dálkově ovládaný vypínač. 😯

    @jpmens actually, I just learned that before computers were a thing and relay logic was controlling duplex lifts, the call buttons were permanently assigned to the left and right car respectively, so calling even the opposite direction was not that bad strategy.

    Alrighty. Time to go on a little train adventure again. It’s been too long.

    Oskar456,
    @Oskar456@mastodon.social avatar

    @partim since those trains are operated by different carriers, perhaps stopping in Almere would break NS's monopoly on the main railway network. I'm pretty sure NS makes sure no one runs trains between too attractive locations, including their daughter company. 😁

    This is hilarious #IPv6

    „We did this to drive down the cost with our DNS provider. Queries for AAAA records that didn't exist, followed by queries for A records, was costing us significantly and we needed to alleviate that.“

    https://forum.newrelic.com/s/hubtopic/aAX8W0000015BUvWAM/bamnrdatanet-resolves-with-wrong-aaaarecords?s=09

    Oskar456,
    @Oskar456@mastodon.social avatar

    So I've set up some testing DNS records. The results are a bit surprising. Try it yourself:

    https://ipv4-mapped.0skar.cz/ (AAAA with IPv4-mapped, should not be reachable from anywhere)
    https://ipv4-mapped-pref.0skar.cz/ (dual stack A plus AAAA with IPv4-mapped)

    Some parts of the Dutch railway network use normally open signaling. Like in this station where green is shown on both tracks in both directions when no trains are around.

    A view of a Dutch train stop platform. In the distance there are two signal posts for two tracks, both showing the green signal. An open railway crossing can be seen in the background.

    Oskar456,
    @Oskar456@mastodon.social avatar

    @partim indeed, I guess all P signals work like that. What I found interesting is that the outgoing signal went red when the train arrived, probably to cover the closing time of the nearby railway crossing.

    This makes me wonder what the point of the green is.

    Oskar456,
    @Oskar456@mastodon.social avatar

    @partim it was red when the train was arriving - I didn't notice the exact time. My guess is that it will turn red when the incoming train is detected and the railway crossing will start to close.

    It turned green shortly after the train stopped so I guess it was the time when the crossing was safely closed.

    Here goes my excuse for not building a prototype for better passenger information: “Travel information is available in the Netherlands as open data under a CC0 license. Authorities and carriers have waived copyright and database rights.”

    @partim Is there something wrong with having OV data freely available?

    Oskar456,
    @Oskar456@mastodon.social avatar

    @partim there's even this OSS app that converts public 0MQ interface to a JSON REST API: https://github.com/rijdendetreinen/gotrain

    And there is also native JSON REST API by NS which is my current toy 😁

    Oskar456,
    @Oskar456@mastodon.social avatar

    @partim and for bonus points, map those names to the proper version numbers. 😯

    Oskar456,
    @Oskar456@mastodon.social avatar

    @partim it always hits me when I ‘cat /etc/debian_version‘. Looking and apt configuration is probably an easier way then.
