I'm a six foot tall ape descendant in Canberra, Ngunnwal/Ngambri country. I work for a tech company, mainly in Python and on Linux. In my spare time I read, turn wood, go for walks, play with technology, 3D print, play keyboards with friends, and ride a motorbike. At of this post, no-one is currently trying to drive a bypass through my home...

@luciedigitalni which clown are we talking about, Walter Sofronoff, Janet Albrechtsen, or Bruce Lehrmann?

As soon as Sofronoff leaked his report to The Australian before the government he was sworn to give it to first, I knew he was dodgy af. It's just being proved, that's all.

I note absolutely no word of an apology from either Albrechtsen or Sofronoff. They're all keeping quiet there.

Governments should not have to give 'incentives' to landlords to get them to install more efficient and economical appliances.

Governments should be punishments for landlords that don't.

Landlords already see over ten percent more rent and twenty percent higher sale price on properties with those improvements. The ones lagging behind are doing it because they only care about the negative gearing and extracting as much money as possible from that property.

PaulWay,
@PaulWay@aus.social avatar

@luciedigitalni I agree ๐Ÿ™‚

But penalties do change people's behaviour. All it takes is a couple of landlords being dragged before the courts and having to pay big fines for the rest of them to suddenly have a bit of a rethink about the state of their apartments ๐Ÿ™‚

And, sure, penalties are hard to enforce, but we should still have them. I dislike purely 'carrot' solutions. We know the penalties for speeding, for parking in no parking zones. It doesn't have to happen every time for us to rethink speeding every time.

@luciedigitalni I've got someone using my gmail address for his Nest superannuation. I only get occasional reminders but being in Australia trying to report this is ... complicated.

Had a conversation on Etsy with a lady looking for short hairpins that can sit under a hat. I've made probably ten now and have finally made three that have fit what she's been looking for. This reflects more on how difficult it is (for me) to make something exactly to order ๐Ÿ™‚

But on the other hand I now have seven new hairpins to sell ๐Ÿ™‚ And I had a good session with my brother-in-law photographing my new work, which is now all catalogued and ready to put onto Etsy ๐Ÿ™‚

NSW police allowed one of their force, Andrew Hurst, to do a year long study on the most effective ways to prevent domestic violence:

https://www.churchilltrust.com.au/news_item/if-not-us-then-who-police-officer-and-churchill-fellow-presents-new-ways-to-combat-domestic-and-family-violence-in-australia/

NSW police have then forbidden Andrew from speaking about our presenting any of the report.

Why?

Andrew Leigh, MP, on Twitter espousing giving to charities. Labor has set a goal for people to double giving by 2030. A huge mistake, will turn people against them. A gross miscalculation, asking the populace to take over what should be provided by Government.

PaulWay,
@PaulWay@aus.social avatar

@treleanor would you say charity should not exist then?

I sort of agree with your premise: that society should provide enough for everyone to have a good standard of living.

But we won't get too that tomorrow, or in a decade. That means capitalism has to be substantially unwound and we take a totally different approach to justice and politics. That's going to take a long time.

We can't just turn off the tap of charity and expect everything to just work.

So, ok, you are free to hoard your own wealth and not give anything to anyone. I'll continue donating to the causes and charities that are working within and outside the system to bring about the change you want to see.

Have now told two people about Pico-8:

If you've got kids who are interested in computer games but aren't really interested in programming, this might interest them. Heck, it might interest you too ๐Ÿ™‚

You can download games other people have created. Then you can tinker with those games. The game code is in Lua, and the sprit and map editors are built into the console. You can run it on Windows, Mac, Linux or Raspberry Pi. So it's got a low barrier to entry ... and you can still just use it to play games.

Today I learned about Lord Howe Island being now powered by 70% renewable energy. They have a web page showing live data at:

http://photonscada.com/data/perspective/client/LHI

This is really wonderful news. I visited in 2013 and those plans were just getting started, but they were then basically running of 100% diesel power. Now they save up to 50,000 litres of diesel per month!

If you're an employee, you should understand that it's your boss' job to pay you as little as he/she possibly can.

PaulWay,
@PaulWay@aus.social avatar

@NickSchwanck Except the ones which have realised that it's far better to keep me.

Hiring costs far more money than the job costs. It takes at least a year for a person to really be up to speed in a role. Underpaying them only means they look for work elsewhere.

I'm sure there are employers out there that think as you say. I also think that there are employers out there that treat their people well and value them. Find the latter one to work with, if you can.

Crazy idea. What if you recorded three voices speaking different languages, but all in distinct frequency bands. For instance, a low English speaking voice, a mid-level Spanish voice, and a high-pitched Japanese voice. Use band-pass filtering to make sure that the voices didn't stray into the other bands.

Would a speaker of any one of those languages be able to listen to that sound and pick out their language? By selectively listening to that frequency range?
