One is a leader of a totalitarian state, the other is fighting against a numerically superior enemy who throws out nuclear threats Like they’re Pokemon cards. You really can’t compare the two.
Lemmy is more like the old school Usenet than modern social media, and I would like it to stay that way. I don’t want the average doomscroller to come over here, I like the cozy atmosphere.
The Fediverse is a resurrection of an old concept, and yes, Usenet was a bunch of servers talking to each other, very much like the rest of the Internet. It has been supplanted by the World Wide Web in the 90s, and now that the Web is choc full of SEO spam, bots and intrusive ads, Usenet style communities are popping up once more.
As for the modern Usenet, it is mostly being used for ahem “file sharing”, hence why some companies offer paid access.
I have a rudimentary understanding of how my home network operates, but I’d like to know more. What resources would you recommend for a beginner to learn how computer networking works, network infrastructures, different protocols, etc?...
Unironically, Wikipedia is the best resource - it also points to better resources. If you want networking themed videos, Network Chuck is also a great resource.
You can also recieve unfathomable knowledge about any other obscure topic.
I was tinkering with the lxqt tray weather app (the site it connects to has limited its API) and as a result I found a program that creates synoptic charts from publically available data! I can now create cloud cover animations, temperature chart data for any region on the earth, and wind charts for 7 days ahead.
Hi, I am a guy in early thirties with a wife and two kids and whenever I go on youtube it always suggests conservative things like guys dunking on women, ben shapiro reacting to some bullshit, joe rogan, all the works. I almost never allow it to go to that type of video and when I do it is either by accident or by curiosity. My...
Over reliance on algorithms has degraded the user experience to the point that the average user is drowning in ragebait and extremist politics, because they drive up engagement. Just download an RSS reader - there are mobile ones like feedly, and in-browser ones Like FeedBro for Firefox. After that, find an RSS feed for your site, and add it to your reader
This is what I pretty much said - algorithms are amplifying already existing negative trends, and those who control them design the user experience for maximum engagement at the cost of the user’s mental wellbeing. We can shrug our shoulders and say “that’s just human nature” which does nothing to improve the situation, or we can create our own experience and “retrain the way we seek content” as you put it.
Devaluing the platform before the IPO sends a clear message to Reddit and other, similar corporations that the data on the site belongs to users, and not the site. If the userbase quietly leaves, then Reddit’s behaviour will be SOP for many sites, because it woul show you can take a steaming shit onto your userbase and come away Scott clean.
Weird racist posts from dank memes keeps showing up in my feed. Are we doing anything to prevent becoming Voat 2.0? We’re really concerned about Threads and that’s a big unknown. Weird racists already destroyed the last Reddit escape are we concerned about that? Like are we going to make a policy of defederating hate groups?...
Voat was a real-world lesson on the paradox of tolerance, and how hate speech rots communities. Instances that federate with hate mobs encourage their behaviour and give them the audiences they crave. While my account is not hosted on this instance I nonetheless implore the admins of lemm.ee not to let hatemongers prey on their users.
As the saying goes, life is a marathon, and not a race. I spent my 20’s feelings very sorry for myself as a result of sheltered upbringing and a lack of ambition. However, please bear in mind that the people you hear about on the news are a very small minority, and not a median representative, and that many of them had resources that they did not disclose in order to curate a favorable image

I was wondering if anyone is disgusted by the smell of their own product. And I mean hates it like people hate other people’s farts.
