RxBrad,

I just finished migrating over to your instance from lemmy.world. I’m liking what I see. Everything seems nice & snappy. (One suggestion: consider turning on email verification to shut down potential bot accounts a bit more thoroughly)

It takes a bit more effort to setup your subscribed /c’s on a smaller instance (if you’re the first on the instance to sub to a /c, you need to already know the address for it). But once you’re subbed to everything you want, it’s business as usual. And without constant downtimes!

(EDIT: Had to log in to my old .world account to find this post to comment on it, since I had it bookmarked here)

RxBrad,

It’s certainly a nice app, but I’ve also grown attached to Connect over these last few weeks. I even donated to the dev, which is something my stingy ass never does.

While I loved Sync, I’m not paying $20/yr for any social media. If I recall, Sync Pro for Reddit was something like $5-6 lifetime. I’d pay that again without blinking an eye.

What is the actual purpose of the "Favorite" button in Mastodon?

The most common answer I see is something along the lines of “it’s the equivalent of liking a post on twitter”. It seems that this is not the case, as the Mastodon devs seem rather adamant that they don’t want “likes” in Mastodon. Perhaps it’s a method of saving posts? Well, that doesn’t make sense either, since...

RxBrad,

I like it when someone favorites my post. 🤷 I’m not out to be some hype-beast on Mastodon.

To me, a favorite = “I like that.”

And a Boost = “yo, check this out.”

The devs can say what they want about them.

RxBrad,

The person who made the post still sees all the likes.

Unless it’s really important that other people see how much others like you, that’s fine by me.

As much as anything, I don’t want every thing someone else posts that I like clogging my timeline.

Is a plex subscription worth it?

I want to unlock the ability to view content on my mobile device. I can do that with a one-time purchase (payed with google opinion rewards) or with a subscription. I want to unlock the ability for my entire family though, across multiple devices. Do I have to pay the “one-time payment” for every device? If so, the plex...

RxBrad,

Note that Plex is against Cloudflare’s ToS. No guarantee they will terminate your account, but it’s a risk.

Could also consider Tailscale.

RxBrad,

I’m happy with my RP3+. Surprisingly, I mostly use it to stream PC & PS5 games.

But the retro games are all there when I decide to quit playing Yakuza Kiwami…

Keep Oracle from deleteing free tier account/vps?

I’m looking to host my own website and mess around with some services but my current home server is already pushed to the max. Planning on getting some thin clients for proxmox when I have some more money, but for now I wanted to mess around on Oracles free tier to test some stuff. I heard they will randomly delete accounts /...

RxBrad,

They sent me an email saying my account was idle (an always on Wireguard for Plex).

I converted to the Pay As You Go plan, and I was good. And it was still free.

RxBrad,

So, uh… What’s up with this “rampant porn spam” post?

RxBrad,

Two Instances, One /c. Gross.

Honestly, wouldn’t it be best to lock it regardless of the reason? Just to prevent a shadow community from lingering…

  • RxBrad,

Just looking at my list of subscribed communities… There are a lot on lemmy.ml.

They’re toast if Mali yoinks the domain name.

This seems really, really bad for Lemmy…

    RxBrad,

My work uses zScaler for its Internet web filters. zScaler has everything *.ml blocked.

So yeah, it’s fairly well-known to be sketchy.

    RxBrad,

Right. This will basically make nearly every /c live in .world as all of the .ml /c’s go defunct. That, or Beehaw, which is walled off from everyone else.

(Side note… my work’s firewalls block everything *.ml – and that’s the only thing that saved me from creating my account there)

    [BETA] Connect beta 1.0.90 Released

Hi all, just some small fixes and a much requested feature in this update. I made the arrow hit targets a bit bigger so they’re easier to click. Also comment navigation got a fix and should work more reliably now. This release brings community suggestions to the ‘Create a post’ page so the list should auto-populate as you...

    RxBrad,

    Extremely minor request…

    • When shortening post text on the post feed, cut the text off at the end of a word, and follow with “…” (instead of the current hard-cutoff at a certain character limit, which tends to cut the last word off partway)
    RxBrad,

Probably why they’re sending out emails right now saying they’re transitioning to mandatory 2FA…

    RxBrad,

    No doubt Threads-related…

Quite a few people on here really go off-the-rails when it comes to .world not coming out and outright blocking it before it’s a thing. (while also forgetting it affects Mastodon, and not-so-much Lemmy)

    RxBrad,

I switched to T-Mobile home internet and it’s great.

(I actually did, and it actually is… I pay half what I paid to Comcast for 6x the speed)

    RxBrad,

    I went from 100/10 to 600/60Mbps.

    Connect 1.0.88 Released

Hi, firstly thank you to all the beta testers that have helped find bugs and issues. I hope this release is even more stable as a result. It’s been a couple days since the last release so I was able to get a lot done in this one. Big changes include a bottom navigation drawer, comment navigation, and improvements to the...

    RxBrad,

Extremely minor visual error when viewing a post…

It shows the post’s instance as being on OP’s home instance, rather than the /c’s instance.

    RxBrad,

Currently on Beta 89. Liking the restyle on posts. But I think the targets on the upvote / downvote buttons need to be about 200% bigger. Spent way too much time trying (and failing) to upvote a post this morning.

    https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/df0ce5d2-64b6-45e4-a0fd-78b86dbc81d2.png

    RxBrad,

Much better. Though I’d even say the target could be bigger yet.

About one-third of the time, I still miss, which just opens the post.

    RxBrad,

If you do use Docker, Mastodon seems to be a prime example of where you shouldn’t use the : latest tag and autoupdate with something like Watchtower.

I initially installed with :latest a few days ago and it gave me 4.1.3 (the actual latest version had been 4.1.4 for quite awhile at that point). I saw other people mention that they “updated” to a 3.x release via :latest recently.

    RxBrad,

I also bailed on mas.to, and made my own single-user instance…

    RxBrad,

Ew. I bet it’s filled with nerds. Like me.

(Also, my wife probably wouldn’t be thrilled if I used this.)

EDIT: Dang it, Lemmy. This post is 2 years old.
