It seems like it is meant to show though the people around her do not follow her faith, that she still treats them with kindness. I don’t care if Christian’s think of me as an “other”. We are quite similar to Reddit compared to any other social media platform. This is why the feature is a part of the app. Lemmy needs all the help it can get to drive user registration AND foster engagement. Finding similar communities from subs helps that. It is useful, so it should not be removed.

I obviously cannot speak for OP, but I think they are referencing how women and people of color have historically had their concerns discounted by the medical field. Women were hysterics, black and brown people did not feel pain like white men do. That kind of bologna. Things are getting better, but these sorts of problems still exist today.
