    Cannot believe how wrong Gruber is on almost every level:

    • If hanging around with TERFs and celebs is fun, then you do you. I'm not one to kink-shame.
    • Threads is basically Twitter with Mastodon like controls and Meta's marketing push. Not exactly interesting.
    • I'll give you this - Threads is a new product of this year (at least according to current date)

    @ct_bergstrom I apologise if you've already said this, but isn't it analogous to the process replication of genetic material in a cell?

    None of the processes "know" what they are doing, they are essentially biological machines with a specific job..

    The question is, presumably, what rate of error we are prepared to accept, not whether or not the LLM (and/or parts of the cell) understands what it is doing.

    (I've spent most of the day thinking about this, prepared to be shown how wrong I am..)

    I wonder if this is the beginning of the end for small instances moderated by volunteers. Seen several disturbing reports about the difficulties of moderating on the fediverse recently.

    @neil I'm not sure the extent to which running an instance on the fediverse is similar to these other things.

    For one thing, there's a whole difficulty with content shared from instances that are several steps removed from yours, the potential for offline abuse stemming indirectly from the instance, the sudden expansion of users (and the whole fediverse) the fact that mastodon usually ships with blacklists rather than whitelists.. etc

    @neil I think it is a philosophical issue not a tool issue. I'm not sure how the Fediverse could be structured differently to avoid admins having to deal with extreme things that are shared by instances that other federated instances are sharing.

    That's a problem.. but also structurally basically the way the thing is supposed to work.

    I guess we are all now experiencing the unpleasant reality that twitter safety teams dealt with on our behalf.
