Google Maps has rolled out an update which shows which parts of your journey are on marked cycle lanes! I might be slow off the mark, I’ve not cycled in a while but... this is cool isn’t it???
TFW you have a particularly smart dog who is good at picking up on words, and have to refer to things by euphemism when planning so as to not cause unreasonable excitement.
If you mention, for example "afternoon walk" he will leap for the front door, so we have to discuss "who is going to perform the perambulation which occurs post lunch?"; similarly if there is a plan to eat sausages they must be referred to as tubular porcine products, treats are things which are unusually pleasant to consume, and cheese is solidified dairy product.
One always uses the actual word at the requisite time, of course.
There’s a chance I might get to read one of my poems on national television. I’m thinking maybe I’ll read the one about what it’s like to have chronic tinnitus. It’s never been published anywhere, and I think it’s a good one. #poetry#PoetryCommunity
I am going to blame "call HMRC‡" being on my TODO list† for this coming week for the nightmare about leeches.
†Had to correct this from TODO lust, there will probably be lustful thoughts next week but not about tax.
‡It isn't the paying taxes I mind but the sheer excess faff they make it sometimes.
@thegreatgonzo on the plus side, it's HMRC you need to call, who do allow their folks to act human & hold proper conversations on the phone. The IRS in USA seem to stall if you deviate from their script.
@Sbectol was that just before they did up the middle with posh shops overlooking the River Kennet (& removed any places to moor up)? I know that was fairly new when I went through in 2001.
In the realm of bizarre things happening to unfortunate people I don't know on the other side of the world for whom I can do precisely nothing, it's hard to get my attention. But what's this I hear about the Brits rounding up international asylum seekers and mailing them to concentration camps in, of all places, bloody Rwanda? How? What? Who thought that was a good idea? I can't even. I don't even. Just what? Never mind, I can't afford to think about this. My brain hurts now.
According to what was reported the day the bill was last debated, both houses of Parliament were basically told "You're going to stay here & keep voting until you vote for it to pass," which is its own whole other nightmarish reality.
Yarn people, textile people : I have found these amazing works. The woman who made them has died, and she never explained what her technique was. Embroidery? Crochet? Can any of you suggest one? Right and wrong sides shown #YarnCraft#TextileCraft#crafting#crochet#embroidery#textile
@CommonMugwort@sheepnik it looks similar to one of the techniques I was shown in a goldwork embroidery workshop, where you deliberately make your stitches in random directions. If you were working on a shaped piece of fabric (or even just cut round it after finishing & trimmed any visible ends) it could look like that?
Husband has just left for the airport, Husky is now pacing around with his usual look of utter betrayal when one of us leaves, and I am ready to attempt to make my lap-top send a day's worth of Can*Con Virtual watching to my television. Prepare for hijinks.
@NathanBurgoine in our house, I am the one who feeds the cats, husband is the one who gives them treats* & lets them get away with begging for food off his plate.
So it's clearly an utter disaster if either of us goes away...
*I do also give them treats, just not as regularly!
UK millennials: if someone handed you a wooden recorder, could you play a song?
(Bonus points in comments if you can tell me which one. This Q brought to you by my confident assertion in group chat that even after 25+ years, I could still smash out Lord of the Dance)
@girlonthenet nope, I've always been rubbish at memorising tunes. I could play a tune & possibly improvise something but I can't play a tune you'd recognise.
Husband: "You look like you've had either not enough coffee, or rather a bit too much."
Me: "Yes? I mean, my brain says not enough, my stomach says too much."
During tonight's bedtime shenanigans (lady Brown goes in, Betty goes in, Lady Grey goes in, then Grey goes out, Betty goes out to get Grey in, repeat,...) we caught Lady Grey perched on top of the coop (120cm). We're so happy we went for a closed run 😂 we have jumping chickens.
Alerted by @jan i managed to get a (not that great) picture
@sadedoes@jan we have a similar set up for our back garden chickens - much better than our previous set up though our hens love making me chase them round the house if I try to make them go in earlier than they want to!
My friend lent me her copy of Gideon the Ninth, which says on the back of the book "The most fun you'll ever have with a skeleton," and that's a lot to live up to given I cut my writing teeth on undead pirate slashfic...
Trying to figure out how I would (passively 😂) run an online #writing support group and what people actually want and need from it.
Here’s my thoughts.
I want:
• something for writers at any stage of their journey — from emerging to established — to foster a sense of community and provide encouragement and support
• a close-knit group, where we catch up on a regular basis — as well as maybe a video chat once/twice a month to check in with goals etc.
@t_l_wood I would love something like this. I've met lots of great like-minded writer folks on here but I'm always wary about assuming too much connection & anything more than polite interest.
