Daniel Ricciardo will make a sensational return to front-line Formula 1 racing at the upcoming Hungarian Grand Prix, with the Australian set to replace Nyck de Vries at the AlphaTauri team for the rest of the season.
People seem to forget half the grid took an engine penalty that weekend, and that track was particularly suited to the williams. Wasn’t impressive in the least.
Over reliance on algorithms has degraded the user experience to the point that the average user is drowning in ragebait and extremist politics, because they drive up engagement. As the title implies, should I do it? I love Arch so far, and I can fix most issues that pop out. However, I sometimes wish to start fresh without too much hassle, but I get a feeling NixOS isn’t as mature as Arch....
Documentation is crap, but has been getting much better recently. Companies are also starting to use NixOS in production and are making contributions. The low friction ARM development process becomes more relevant every day.
Unfortunately it’s really hard even for huge companies to reliably and profitably host video, youtube bled money for decades before they added the insane amount of advertising and changed their content policy to be as ad friendly as possible. I’d expect reddit was profitable, I or near break even at the least, before they added video hosting. VCs definitely wouldn’t have let reddit bleed for 18 years on large losses, it’s just not part of the business model. The problem is, after they accepted VC money they were likely pressured into adding video as a way to copy tiktok. It would really difficult for instance hosts running on goodwill and a bit of donation money to pay for video hosting without bankrupting themselves. The amount you need to pay for data transfer and server infrastructure is exponentially higher.
That said, I’m not sure how scalable peertube is irl, maybe it could be done with good peertube embedding support or something? That probably be the ideal solution because it forces users to give something back in return for being able to watch video due to its P2P nature.
I think the culture is different here for a few reasons. I checked out lemmy a few years ago when I saw a hacker news post about it, back then it was almost entirely technical people who were entirely opposed to corporate social media, and a lot of tin foil hat type privacy discussions. On top of that, if you look at a lot of the older instances like lemmy.ml and hexbear.net you’ll find a lot of tanky communities that were displaced by corporate social media. These older and more established subcultures are probably shaping the culture to this day. I think their influence will fade as the fediverse becomes more popular.
Second, the threads thing is the Big Event on the fediverse right now, and everyone is talking about it. I addition to the groups I mentioned earlier, a ton of the lemmy user base just came from reddit, and I can’t even count how many “fuck meta because privacy etc.” conversations I’ve seen there. This is the same way everyone was talking about the reddit migration to lemmy constantly a few weeks ago and filling up the front page. This will probably blow over in a week or two. Reddit has stuff like this happening all the time as well.
Third, I I’d say lemmy and the broader fediverse is self selecting for the more tin foil hat privacy obsessed types due to the barrier for account creation being higher. Why wouldn’t someone choose the more popular, more reliable, easier to on-board app if they don’t care about privacy? The API changes were definitely handled really poorly, but a drop in content quality from poor moderation still remains to be seen. The subs I was frequenting definitely became less active as the protest dragged on, but a lot of them were open source focused communities. I don’t think everyone has noticed the same change I have. Most people on reddit don’t really care about it’s drama.
Brain dead take. Sums up as “Wah! Information you publicize is public!” This guy completely misses the fact the the privacy nightmare of corporate social media is the apps that scrape every piece of traceable information off your phone to sell, and the cookies and browser tracking so they can follow you all over the web. AFAIK fediverse sites aren’t doing this.
So, I’ve been a Neovim user for a few years now. I started as most of you (I assume) with vim, and just kept on using and expanding that config file over the years....
Switched a few years back when I decided to mostly rewrite my config from scratch. It’s definitely nice to use a normal programming language for your config, plus I’ve been doing a few things here and there that I never would have bothered with if I was still using vimscript. To top it off, I’m pretty sure you have to at least do some Lua work if you want to take advantage of the built in lsp support, which I make use of extensively.
The lack of a battle pass is really great imo, whenever games include them it puts a bad taste in my mouth. It’s also really scratching the BF3/4 itch that’s been missing from the market since Dice took Battlefield in a less vehicle focused direction, and tossed any sort of thoughtful map design off a cliff.

I've found lately GPUs are the only thing that's way out of line price wise. CPUs are as reasonable as ever, SSDs and RAM are cheaper than they've ever been. If you're willing to go for a last gen GPU you can get a great deal on the used market. I don't think the situation is nearly as dire as this time last year.
This is basically correct, they could also create a scheme where they charge for federation and introduce it on short notice, similar to what reddit and Twitter did with their api. I think the best way to prevent this is to not federate with corpos, especially when they've been bad actors in other ecosystems like fb and Google.
I would probably be helpful for TheDude to give some additional context to what's going on at lemmygrad that led to the ban, I haven't been over there to check but tankie communities I've had the misfortune of interacting with tend to lean pretty heavily into conspiratorial content and definitely have streaks of homophobia/transphobia.
I definitely think de federation should be on the table if an instance has a significant portion of their users breaking our site rules, or trolling/spamming our communities. We don't want to have our communities overrun with people who want to promote a negative atmosphere because the admins of another instance are unwilling/unable to moderate their users effectively, as it will just put undue burden on our admins and community moderators.
I'd say before de federating we should definitely try to engage with the offending instance's admins to see if they're acting in good faith, and if they have a plan for mitigating the issues.
Personally I don't think we should federate with instances that make themselves safe-havens for people who post bigoted/conspiratorial content and dog-whistling, as having that kind of content on our /all feed will drive away users from groups the content is targeting, making the community worse overall.
Personally, I want nothing to do with them and I'm not willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. I moved to the Fediverse to get away from all these corpos.
From what I've seen, people are worried about Facebook using the Embrace, Extend, Extinguish paradigm to take control of the fediverse and become the only relevant platform.
My primary argument is that they post hateful content and covid conspiracies and it is irresponsible to platform this by including it in our federation. Secondly we already got rid of lemmygrad. Thirdly, there's little to be lost in the defederation given the type of stuff being posted over there. Do as thou wilt...
Honestly this has been par the course for him the entire time he's been at RB, he started strong last year as well, but majorly fell off as the season progressed.
If you visit a popular community like /c/memes@lemmy.ml with your web browser, the images shown are hotlinked from the Lemmy instance that the person posting the image utilized. This means that your browser makes a https request to that remote server, not your local instance, giving that server your IP address and web browser...
I'd imagine that applies to a website sharing or selling logs of user ips that visited, if you go hit some other server, you give them your ip so they can talk back to you. You're basically doing this on almost every website because almost all will use third party cdns like fonts.google.com or others for Javascript libraries etc. If linking content from another site is the actual interpretation, the modern web basically can't legally exist in the EU.

PSA: The Lemmy federation convention of hotlinking images to other peer federation servers makes it easy for a rogue instance to collect end-user IP addresses & browser strings, don't assume otherwise
