ScreaminOctopus,

This is true in the US as well, but you can find the brand name stuff if you know the exact item you’re looking for

ScreaminOctopus,

Is this different than hosting an ftp server?

what's the appeal of Linux for the average desktop user?

I’m going to very carefully poke the hornet’s nest here and ask this basic question that I never really explicitly formulated. It seems apt here on Lemmy in particular because people take as a given the superiority of Linux as the starting point of conversations involved computers generally....

ScreaminOctopus,

I have a laptop that was around 6 years old when windows 10 came out (i7 Asus ultrabook). It’s basically incapable of running it, even opening a browser takes over a minute. It runs any linux distro I’ve put on it very well and it’s currently 10 years old, I haven’t had any issues with web browsing, writing documents or anything else. There’s no reason to expect a computer that can browse the web when it rolled off the line shouldn’t be capable of doing so 6 years later. Computers don’t improve that quickly anymore.

The culture of replacing devices every 4-5 years is completely manufactured by device manufacturers and Microsoft. It creates so much unnecessary waste and is destroying the planet.

ScreaminOctopus,

Streaming and hosting white noise on their servers costs them money, most people who are using these podcasts probably just do it while they’re asleep and happen to have a spotify subscription. These people aren’t going to cancel a subscription because they need another app for white noise.

Spotify could add a generator for white noise soundscapes to their app, but there are countless applications that do this already for free, including open source options. If they aren’t giving money to people uploading soundscapes, they can take more money from monthly subscriptions themselves and give more to artists, increasing their profits and making their platform more desirable than their competitors, which has been an issue for them in the past with criticism from major artists and indies alike.

Overall these noise streams exist to game the system by getting people to play for a long time on content that’s probably just made by hitting the play button on a generator app written by someone other than the uploader, and it’s likely the only reason it happens is people don’t want to download an additional free app for that task

ScreaminOctopus,

There are many free apps that can generate soundscapes like this.

ScreaminOctopus,

I’ve been using Logseq and syncing via syncthing, but you can sync with any file syncing service

ScreaminOctopus,

One of the main things I feel is missing is there doesn’t seem to be a way to view and track all tasks in all your pages, I generally like tasks to live with the relevant info rather than in the journals. Do you know if there’s a way to get something like that?

ScreaminOctopus,

Unfortunately I think this might be unironically true for them

Recommendations for a FOSS Cross-Platform Note-Taking Application

Up to now I’ve been using Simplenote, which has a Linux client (but also Android & iOS) & supports live collaboration on notes. However, Simplenote hasn’t had a meaningful update for a long time, & it’s recently been behaving strangely, e.g. notes undeleting themselves, line duplications & undeletions....

ScreaminOctopus,

I’ve been using a Foss alternative called Logseq that’s very similar.

ScreaminOctopus,

It’ll automatically show tagged blocks from other pages in a special section. I don’t know if it has anything as advanced as data view though, I haven’t felt the need for anything other than displaying references. The plugin ecosystem seems decent, but I mostly just use basic functionality.

ScreaminOctopus,

I don’t know how this is news, 3.2% is a pretty healthy number.

ScreaminOctopus,

This, or just dropping the wet tire all together would make a lot of sense. Cars aren’t allowed to race in full wet conditions anymore because the spray is so bad, so having the full wet tire is just a waste.

Other dev won't follow best practices, is this common?

Hello again, I’m in a situation where the one the senior devs on my team just isn’t following best practices we laid out in our internal documentation, nor the generally agreed best practices for react; his code works mind you, but as a a team working on a client piece I’m not super comfortable with something so fragile...

ScreaminOctopus,

I don’t understand why you’d be fixing unit tests he broke during his pr. It seems like he might be bullying you? Maybe discuss with your manager.

ScreaminOctopus,

It’s way easier to communicate a terminal based solution over the internet. Instead of making a guide with images, possibly needing annotation, you can just say “run x, y, z in order” and the user can just copy and paste it (even though it’s a bad habit to run random commands off the internet)

ScreaminOctopus,

I’d imagine most apps you need should run under waydroid

ScreaminOctopus,

If it is a conspiracy that strategy can’t work forever, eventually republican voters will give up if their party stays too small of a minority for too long, then we can have contests between actually candidates again.

Airbnb is adding cleaning fees to a new 'total price' of bookings in search results after people complained listings were misleading (www.businessinsider.com)

Airbnb guests will soon be able to see the total cost of their stay, including cleaning and service fees, before taxes in a step towards better pricing transparency on the platform.

ScreaminOctopus,

Airbnb really needs to crack down on chores, and start treating hosts the way ebay treats sellers. If you wanna run an unregulated hotel you’d better fucking act like a hotel manager, not somebody’s mom. They’ve got people climbing over each other to be hosts, so they can afford to give bad ones the shaft.

ScreaminOctopus, (edited )

An option to remove unauthenticated access to the main feed would be a great fix for the first issue, and probably would be desirable on single user/invite only instances where the admins don’t want random people taking up server resources with the web interface

Why is Linux so frustrating for some people?

Don’t get me wrong. I love Linux and FOSS. I have been using and installing distros on my own since I was 12. Now that I’m working in tech-related positions, after the Reddit migration happened, etc. I recovered my interest in all the Linux environment. I use Ubuntu as my main operating system in my Desktop, but I always end...

ScreaminOctopus,

Idk if this is really true, I don’t what situations you need to use the command line in Ubuntu or Fedora that would affect more than 10% of users max. You install packages through the store, wifi can be managed through the gui, external drives mount automatically. Imo this should cover the use case for almost everyone.

ScreaminOctopus,

The firewall thing is definitely a major oversight.

ScreaminOctopus,

My God, 5$ for unlimited searches would have been expensive, but you only get 300! This thing would have to literally read my mind, and even then I don’t think it would be worth it

ScreaminOctopus,

Pay for a search engine so you can get in the habit of not using it? They’ve really got you lol

ScreaminOctopus,

Do people actually believe anything they do on company computers is private? I honestly assume that someone is at least skimming my work messages already
