A live volcano chain is not somewhere I would build a bunker.

Google DeepMind used a large language model to solve an unsolvable math problem (www.technologyreview.com)

The researchers started by sketching out the problem they wanted to solve in Python, a popular programming language. But they left out the lines in the program that would specify how to solve it. That is where FunSearch comes in. It gets Codey to fill in the blanks—in effect, to suggest code that will solve the problem....

“Gold among the garbage” sums up AI very nicely.

No worries. Throw some extra logs on the campfire. She will just circle it a few dozen times, get too close and burn up. Problem solved.

Marketing email's subject made me think my card got hacked (lemmy.world)

A hostel company I stayed with a while back emailed me with the subject: “Your booking is confirmed!”. This made me frantically check all my accounts since I hadn’t booked any hostels recently. I was super concerned until I opened the email and saw… it was a stupid marketing email…...

Soak a large sponge in cornstarch, wrap as small as possible with rubber bands, let dry, cut rubber bands then flush a hand full of these down the toilet.

In the clip, an orca pod can be seen using Antarctic icebergs as “scratching posts” to rub their itchy skin.

Where’s the Elong Muskrat? He usually gets a stiffie over these kinds of things.

For me, the future is Firefox and Linux.

Now if I could only reorder my Firefox bookmarks on my homepage.

My next computer will be Mint and open source programs.

Senex,

I’ve been playing with Mint on an old computer and I gotta say Linux is not as difficult as people think. All the programs I use work very well on Mint. When I eventually buy a new computer I’m gonna go completely Linux.

I spent an afternoon at my in-laws, who watch Fox 24/7, fact checking the nonsense spouted. They were not happy with me.

Amazon issues warning about major change for Kindle users starting next month (goodereader.com)

In a recent communication, Amazon has alerted Kindle users about significant changes set to take effect from next month. The notification pertains to the phasing out of support for sending MOBI (.mobi, .azw, .prc) files through the “Send to Kindle” feature, starting November 1, 2023. Samsung Mini Tablet + ReadEra = No more Amazon nonsense.

My dog and I got jumped by raccoons this morning. Now I have to pay at least $1500 to make sure I don't get rabies

My dog is fine, though, which is the most important thing to me. The raccoons scratched my arm kinda bad and my legs are covered in scratches. My doctor can’t be sure if the raccoons had saliva on their claws, and wants me to get rabies shots just in case. She sent me to an ER because she can’t get the shots in our area....

My tired brain read this as you had to pay the raccoons $1500 or they would give you rabies. Can’t even go into the woods without being extorted.

Google is working on essentially putting DRM on the web (github.com)

The much maligned “Trusted Computing” idea requires that the party you are supposed to trust deserves to be trusted, and Google is DEFINITELY NOT worthy of being trusted, this is a naked power grab to destroy the open web for Google’s ad profits no matter the consequences, this would put heavy surveillance in Google’s...

I like the idea of Internet 2.0. Kinda like what we are doing here on Lemmy. Corporate ruins it, we build it anew!

My ancestry.com experience in a nutshell (lemmy.world)

I don’t know if I’m just doing something wrong but I built my family tree and the website seems to have barely any information about my family at all. I found out more just checking out our national archives then what I found on this website. It’s maybe worth noting that I’m not in the US and it does appear to be...
