I’m just throwing this out there but having the default sort incentivize comments seems like it’d highlight posts meant to cause flame wars… Is that what we want out of this platform?
the domain was set to expire in April and was intentionally not being renewed because gestures vaguely at everything
people knew this was coming at some point. the surprising part was that it happened now from the orders of the registry as opposed to in April.
announcements were made and the instance was already in it’s death bed for a while, this isn’t like the fmhy/mali situation with things happening out of the blue.

some ISPs may be blocking cat box because there’s a significant amount of porn being uploaded on there, but that’ll happen with any file host as open as catbox
hosting files, especially videos, are expensive (hence why most instances disable video uploads) and, if public, has a hefty moderation workload, so anything of reasonable size (and isn’t personal) will end up either enshittified a la imgur or die.
and we shouldn’t expect everyone to have their own webservers just to share their silly stuff on the net. this is a difficult problem to solve
the 0.19 implementation is so half-assed I genuinely think the Lemmy devs just don’t want that functionality but expected quite a lot of backlash if they outright said as much, so they decided to implement something that ticks the box in the “wanted features” list without having any effect
afaik it only blocks communities and explicitly lets users from blocked instances through
the thought behind banning it and explicitly allowing “US acceptable zones” is so we can shove all US discussions there and let people talk other things in peace, and those who want to talk US politics can go and mess shit up there, far away from the rest of us who just want to chill and be silly in peace :3
doing it on a “case by case basis” does not help when the intent behind the hypothetical rule is to enact a Lemmy wide change in the atmosphere of the platform
