Here's a little something I did last winter as an exercise. I’m posting this today because I have yet to follow through on my promise to myself to do more of this kind of thing this winter, so I have nothing new to show.
I was reading a book called “Light, Science, and Magic” which I highly recommend. This is a technique it taught for photographing glass in a low key manner. The second photo is the pull-back of my setup, which gets the job done but is less than ideal (I made-do with what I had, mainly cardboard and a desk lamp.) I have the light on one side illuminating the white backdrop somewhat unevenly, as you can see the different levels on the left vs. the right side of the glass. Ideally you try to get full, even illumination on the white part. The black foam core on the left is blocking the light from hitting the glass directly. The idea of the black backdrop in front of the white one is to illuminate just the edges of the glass while keeping the volume of the object dark. You frame it so that the white is juuuusssst outside the image frame.
I learned a lot from the book, and have since forgotten most of it (I do have notes) but if you’re interested in how light behaves on different kinds of surfaces and some techniques you can use, it’s definitely worth reading.
Check out this relic! Ah, it brings back memories of friends, the beach, piling in the back all higgledy-piggledy, and the rich aroma of exhaust fumes.
I've been to the Leaning Tower of Pisa. It's a tower, and it's leaning. You look at it, but nothing happens, so then you look for someplace to get a sandwich.

What else in your experience has turned out like this?

Edinburgh, Scotland. Dark, dreary, rainy, cold, slippery walkways, unfriendly shopkeepers speaking with an unintelligible accent, a big castle on a hill. Long damn train ride from London.
A little something for #ThrowbackThursday from a little free time I had in Norway when I was there for work over 20 years ago. What a beautiful country! These are scenes in and around Bergen. I was there in early July, so it was quite a treat to be walking around in daylight so late in the evening. I remember the people there being very friendly and welcoming.
Who says you can’t have fun on a Tuesday night? Contest! Can you guess what this is? DM me your guess and I’ll announce the winner (person with the closest guess) in 24 hours. Or when I get bored of saying wrong. 😁 I don’t have any prizes so I guess this is for bragging rights. Who you would ever brag to about this, I have no idea, but whatever. 😆
