What even are the frontends other than Mastodon? I'm sticking with CI as my main instance for as long as it's up, but I'd been meaning to set up an instance for a project I've been working on anyway - if Masto's future is uncertain it seems unwise to go that route? But it's also the only one I'm familiar with >_>

@revengeday @mircoxi I mean, there's quite a few different applications that use AP as a base protocol - "front ends" as you called them. Off the top of my head, I can think of

  • Misskey/Calckey/Firefish/IceShrimp
  • Akkoma
  • Pleroma
  • Pixelfed
  • Bookwyrm
  • PeerTube

Some of them are applications that are built for a specific genre or type of content, but they can all talk to each other. Plus there's multiple forks of Mastodon (Home Town and glitch-soc, which we run on CI). And there's a few more that are out there as well.

@kaiserkiwi Pardon my ignorance here, but I've never messed with anything like stories. I always either immediately turned them off on other platforms or never used them in the first place.

What would stories add to mastodon that uploading video into a threaded toot doesn't allow? I'm curious to know what I might have been missing out on.

So ideally in your mind, it would be something that you could set per toot instead of using the feature that deletes all your old posts of a certain age.

That makes sense to me. It could go right next to the ability to disable comments on a toot. Seems like a good safety and security feature, honestly. "Temporary Toots".

So many people say Buldak stuff is extremely hot but I was a bit disappointed from the sauce itself. Some people said the Ramen are much hotter.

@kaiserkiwi Well, as a connoisseur of spicy ramen in general and Buldak in particular, I can honestly say that the 2X Spicy ones are at my limit of what is tolerable. Having other foods like rice or stir fry along with it helps to make it more tolerable, but just eating the noodles by themselves (at least in a pre-packaged bowl container) was a contradiction of "I love this!" and "I don't think I want to do this regularly!" feelings. :kekw:​

I think you'll enjoy these. I know that I, for one, was breathing black fire just like that hellspawn chicken mascot on the package. :blob_sweat:​

@kaiserkiwi All I know is that the one that had "2X Spicy" on it made me cry tears of hot lava. The black is pretty dang spicy also. I've had both. IIRC, the black is more kind of a "fried ramen" kind of thing whereas the red is more of your standard ramen.

But I mean both of them are pretty dang spicy. You should make the decision as to which one of them is the spiciest for yourself. Don't just take my word for it. :holdthepain:​

@chaotin @kaiserkiwi Now that we're talking about it, I can't honestly remember if the "black" or "red" packaging had anything to do with it. All I know is that both of them were super spicy, but that whichever one had "2X" on it made my mouth burn with the fire of a thousand suns.

The other difference that may or may not come into play here is that I haven't had the straight ramen noodles that you boil in your own pot. Mine came in heat-n-eat bowls so that the water level and everything was (I guess) calibrated for maximum heat. I don't know if that makes any difference, but I just wanted to point that out.

(really, I'm just hedging my bets in case you can handle spicier food than me. :kekw:​ :kekw:​ :holdthepain:​)

8,000 SHU (Scoville Heat Units) is roughly the equivalent of a fresh, uncooked, and un-pickled jalapeno. So if raw jalapenos don't do anything for you, the red 2X Heat Buldak might not either.

Now I'm super curious to see how it turns out! 🤔

    @revengeday @JoMendacium Because we all know that the instant one cable is either wound up or discarded, another cable of the same type dies and needs to be replaced. All cables are linked with each other at the quantum level in perfect balance.

    Hence, an unwound cable just shoved in a box is essentially a Schrödinger's cable. Is it useful or is it trash? The only way to know is to throw it out, but can you really take the risk of being wrong?

    Best to just leave those bad boys where they lie and shove the box further back into the closet, just to be sure.

    Happy 2nd Birthday :corteximplant: !!! 🥳🎉 It's been a great 2 years, although I've only been here for 1 and a half of them. :holdthepain:

    I'm really happy and proud to be part of the community that has grown here, and I echo all the sentiments that @lucy posted earlier. I have never had a social media experience like the one I found here, and within 2 days of joining :corteximplant_b: I knew I had made a good decision for my "home" instance!

    For those of you young'uns out there, this place is a lot like what things felt like back in the early days of the 'net and combined with all the other OTS stuff in the "family" has given me back an excitment that I lost so many long years ago. It's good to be here, with good folks, with lots of diverse interests but also lots of shared passion from all over the world.

    I'm glad to be a part of it, and I'm so glad that everyone on decided to be a part of it too!

    And much thanks to @revengeday for opening up his hobby project to us and giving all of us nomads a base camp to call home. You're a true street samurai, choom! :samurai: :silverhand:

The trouble is going to be how to work that EMP thing to where it only disables the hotdog and its operator's controller and not all my own personal electronics.

    Maybe some sort of focused EMP blaster gun?

    @kaiserkiwi So many businesses just moved the "supply chain shortages" excuse from the pandemic lockdowns into "business as usual". Now that it's 2-3 years on (depending on when you count the end of the lockdowns), they still haven't returned to pre-pandemic performance. They just kept using the same old excuse.

    As a consumer, it's one thing to not know when your delivery might come because the whole world is effectively shut down; it's quite another several years later when everything is "back to normal".

    It's infuriating.

    But at least you did finally get your order and it was correct! I hope that you enjoy all this cool new stuff that you've been waiting on for too long! :cyberheart_green:
