Artificial Intelligence is stealing jobs from trained bird identifiers.

My twelve days away from “work work” end after the weekend, but my stress levels are still at 11.

I’m so bad at relaxing these days. Even if I don’t do anything or do enjoyable things (Hiking, Lego, watching TV), it’s all stressful.

I don’t know what to do, and I guess this is all burnout-consequences still after many years.

sigh, exhausted

TSindelar,
@TSindelar@zeppelin.flights avatar

@yatil I think eventually the coping strategies can't keep up and the only answer is less work

Expanding on reporting faculty/student ratios for school rankings, colleges should start reporting cop/student ratios.

I had an editor once who FedEx’d her horses cross-country between California and Florida properties. FedEx didn’t offer this service, but it did for her. This was in 2000. A very different time in journalism.

@glennf how.... how were they packed?

Also was she Greek?

Theory: the student protestors demands for votes on divestment are being responded to with such swift violence because the ultimate offense any group can do is "f#ck with the money"

I remember talking to a fancy tech person who had taken an interest in the college affordability crisis. They had hired consultants about designing a stripped down low cost version of a degree with minimizing all the expensive frills, focusing on just the costs of instruction, assessment etc., how could we get away from the amenities race to offer a meaningful higher education experience that wouldn't put you in debt for the rest of your life.

That's right they re-invented "Community College"

TSindelar,
@TSindelar@zeppelin.flights avatar

the solution to a lot of things actually exist but tech folks don't like them when they're for poor people.

When i started my career i used a piece of educational software named Promethues, because it exemplified value of education: igniting the spark of independance, celebrating the triumphs of science and the arts, and the wonder of not reading the second half of a greek myth when choosing what to name your product after

You ever ask a marine if that's the same thing as the army?

It's almost as bad as mixing up star wars and star trek.

Buy yourself a new oven mitt*, you deserve it.

(Offer valid for any kitchen thing you lack or have but really needs replaced, up to a value of $15)

TSindelar,
@TSindelar@zeppelin.flights avatar

Context: i had an old oven mitt that was falling apart and caused my hand to get burned sometime that I used for months.

I new silicone mitt was $8.

I will pay $8 to not get burned almost every day.

TSindelar,
@TSindelar@zeppelin.flights avatar

@tantramar not getting burned is great!

The US and especially Massachusetts are in a housing crisis and yet people with houses really don't want more housing:

Do you want a class war? Because I think this is how you get a class war.

Also calling apartment buildings near public transit "an invasion" is a helluva dog whistle

New work place euphemism to replace "what if you get hit by a bus":

"What if you join a band?"

Seems slightly less intense than "What if you won the lottery" also slightly more likely, but not as likely as the bus thing given Boston area traffic patterns.

The cost of youtube premium, $14/ month, seems perfectly chosen such that i'd never pay for that but also verytime i sit through a loud youtube ads i think about what my life would be like if i was the kind of person who had youtube premium.

I have a very strong thought about Survivor.

If you don’t know how to swim and haven’t MASTERED making a fire, you should not be on Survivor.

This has been a very strong thought I have about Survivor.

I always think it's a bit weird that we consider giving people a plant as just like a normal nice generic gift thing.

It's like: here, this is your new hobby I'm assigning you. Obviously you don't HAVE to take on this new hobby... but a living thing will die if you do not.

TSindelar,
@TSindelar@zeppelin.flights avatar

Obviously I'm not talking about my friends who have given me plants. I cherish each of your presents as a symbol of our friendship.

I definitely don't think of plants as basically a garbage pet that requires care and upkeep and does nothing.

And it's great that once you have one plant, that you didn't want, people are only more likely to give you future plants.

It's fine.
