A house divided against itself, cannot stand. I believe this country cannot endure permanently half liberal and half conservative. I do not expect the Union to be dissolved – I do not expect the house to fall – but I do expect it will cease to be divided. It will become all one thing or all the other.
I think it might have something to do with some young people not feeling connected to their communities. In my case, I grew up in a conservative Christian community but as I got older, I didn’t want to be conservative or Christian. I left the only community I had and I haven’t yet found another community to replace it. I don’t think this is an entirely new phenomenon, but whereas in the past young people would move from conservative rural areas to more liberal urban areas, many urban areas today are prohibitively expensive, so that’s not an option, at least not for as many young people. Many people are therefore without a community, left to feel lonely and alienated.
Mostly. I’m fine with some of these being left up to the states, like prostitution and marijuana, although I do think marijuana’s federal status should change (from schedule 1, to a much lower schedule). Also, I think the highest tax bracket should be 99%, or even 100%. But that highest bracket should be a very high number, like 0.001% of GDP.
I’ve always hated this comparison because the two problems are just not the same, at all. CFCs were nowhere near as ubiquitous as fossil hydrocarbons, and CFCs had an essentially drop-in replacement, which fossil fuels do not. There’s no non-hydrocarbon fuel that we can just replace for coal, natural gas, gasoline, diesel fuel, jet fuel, etc. None that I’m aware of, anyway.
That community is on another instance that currently isn't allowing participation from lemmy.world users. There's a PC Gaming community on lemmy.world. I don't know about a general video games community. Someone should start one, because who knows when, or if, that other instance will open back up to lemmy.world users.
(Post) modern life is so empty, it's so soulless. Society has been deconstructed and we are all now fully atomized, utility maximizing individuals in an endless cycle of earning and consuming. Earn, consume - make money, spend money. Interpersonal relationships, family, community have all become secondary to the earn/consume cycle. We now all only live to serve the endless profit behemoth. Even nature itself is only a tool for profit.
We need to reintegrate back into the natural world and refocus on community and human relationships. We need to prioritize sustainability, health, happiness, and well being for ourselves and future generations over short term individual gains and immediate gratification.
Gender isn't assigned by the individual. Gender is assigned by parents, doctors, the community, and society broadly. Gender is an inherently social construction. Some people have misconstrued this to mean that gender is an individual construction. It is not. How you see yourself is only part what makes you, you. You are also defined by how others see you. I understand that some people don't identify with the gender that has been assigned to them, and thus want to change their gender assignment, and I empathize with those people, but whether or not they are able to do this is at least partially out of their control. Just because you see yourself a certain way, doesn't mean others will see you that way, and, again we are defined not only by how we perceive ourselves, but how others perceive us.
Social/cultural construction doesn't mean that it has to be a collective construction.
It absolutely does mean that. We just live in this age of hyper individualism, where people attempt to atomize the individual from the collective, as though the individual is something wholly its own, but it isn't. It's not possible to separate the individual from the collective.
At this point it becomes their own choice and it overrides any gender assignment given at birth.
That's not true. Your gender assignment is defined by how others treat you, how they interact with you, and that's not completely under the individual's control. You can't choose how other people view you, at least not entirely.
Brands and corporations provide consumers with something they want and in return the consumers give the brand total loyalty and devotion. It doesn't matter if the brand engages in anticompetitive practices, it doesn't matter if the brand engages in predatory practices, it doesn't matter if the brand is actively harming the consumer, so long as the consumer is being provided with something they desire. It's gotten so bad that many brands have a cult like following.
I'm just sticking to lemmy.world for now. It doesn't have all the communities I want yet but it seems more open than the others. I don't like walled gardens or gated communities. If I wanted a platform with power hungry, elitist moderators creating circle jerk in-groups, I would have stayed on Reddit.
Not necessarily. As someone else pointed out in this thread, beehaw is currently set up so that Lemmy.world users can view and comment on posts on beehaw communities, but those comments can only be seen by other lemmy.world users. Individual instances can restrict what users from other instances can do.
Yes, I upgraded from 64 GB to 512 GB. I also replaced the fan. I reinstalled SteamOS from USB I flashed with the steamOS recovery image. I used a USB C thumb drive, but I think a regular thumb drive would work if you have a dock with a USB port. It was very simple, I thought.
Reddit was so combative at times, it felt like I was getting into arguments with people on there a lot. I like seeing Lemmy grow and new people join, and I just wanna enjoy it and not argue with people about stupid shit. Let's just all have fun!
I prefer non-corporate alternatives, like lemmy or mastodon. However, if it’s going to last, users are going to have to contribute what they can to keeping the lights on, otherwise, if lemmy grows, they’ll have to resort to things like ads to cover their costs and it will become reddit all over again.
Right now, I’m playing the early access version of Baldurs Gate 3. I’m getting ready to put it down (frustrated: BG3 has the potential to be good, but without controller support, I’m getting really frustrated with the UI. ) and switch to Yakuza Like a Dragon....
Batman Arkham City, then I moved on to Arkham Knight but I streamed that from my desktop because it's more demanding. Now I'm trying to figure out what to play next. Maybe Jedi Fallen Order.

[Discussion] Have you upgraded the internal storage in your deck?
Have you upgraded your internal storage? How did it go? Did you reinstall steamOS from scratch or clone the original M.2/eMMC?
I don't wanna be so angry on Lemmy like I was on Reddit
