So here’s something to think about. My high school & middle school aged Gen Z kids think Twitter was for crusty old people, their eyes rolled when I mentioned Mastodon or Bluesky… both already know what Threads is bc of the Instagram connection and want it on their phones.
My 13yr old: What is that?
Me: It's Bluesky.
Her: Is that some ancient thing?
Me: Nope, hot new thing. Want an invite?
Her: Ew. Looks crusty for old people.
Me: Fine, no invite for you. I'm going to skeet this.
Her: You're going to what?
Me: You heard me. Skeet.
Her: [AUDIBLE EYE ROLL]
Me: Fine. I'll just toot this on the elephant app.
Her: [CONFUSED STARE]
Me: You know. Mastodon.
Her: I don't know what you're talking about.
Me: You need to get off TipTop.
Her: It's TIKTOK!

As a child of the 70s and early 80s I want to know what happened to all those people that regularly just spontaneously combusted? Did they all get abducted by UFOs? Sink in all the quicksand? Got lost in the Bermuda Triangle? Did Nostradamus predict their horrible apocalyptic death? Get lost finding Noah's Ark on the top of a mountain somewhere? Is the Spock guy out there searching for them?
My opinion of federation with Threads has moved from agnostic to “hell no” as I try and get the vibe of Threads and realize it’s the worst of Twitter and the worst of Insta/Meta mashed together - influencers, toxicity, algorithmically driven, etc.
Look, this is my doomer side speaking, but kinda getting the feeling that Mastodon and Bluesky were Rosencrantz and Gildenstern; Threads is Fortinbras and he just walked onstage, stepping over the slowly cooling body of Elon Musk.

Just found out this morning my closest friend of thirty five years, a brother to me in all but name, took his life over the weekend after decades of quiet struggle with depression & other issues.
He had a very public facing profession, and was out fighting the good fight every day — I’m sure many who knew him in that way wouldn’t believe he would be someone with such struggles.
2:19AM & awake because Cat. We would let him hang out in the communal apartment hallway, but last week a neighbor fed him food and then he ran into their apartment. He now assumes he can run into any hallway door that opens. So now he stands in front of the apartment door at 2am howling to go out in the hallway so that he can scratch and howl at the neighbors doors. So I can’t let him out. So now I have Howling Cat At Door at 2AM as opposed to Cat Punching My Face at 2:48AM.
The NYC hospital my wife has worked for 20 years serving a needed population in Lower Manhattan as a cardiologist is now closing. Another sad loss for NYC and a huge adjustment for my family as she now has to find a new job.
The hospital property will be turned into luxury condos in short order.
