Rainfall, poor ground conditions, and supply problems of materials, the Wunderline reopening between Bad Nieuweschans (NL) and Leer (DE) is postponed till Summer 2025.

From 22 May, SNCF in ticket offices or through SNCF Connect can no longer sell you tickets for at least these neighbouring railways (this list might not be complete)

NS 🇳🇱
SNCB 🇧🇪
SBB* 🇨🇭
Renfe 🇪🇸
Trenitalia 🇮🇹
DB** 🇩🇪
ÖBB 🇦🇹

The scale of this absurd decision is amazing. And it plays right into the hands of the likes of Trainline

    • except Lyria
      ** - except cross border FR-DE TGVs and ICEs

@jon I guess that they can still sell Paris <> Brussels from July

ThibaultLapers,
@ThibaultLapers@mstdn.io avatar

@jon Yes this one. I mean it is a coop between both companies so it should work.

Eurostars shouldn't be a problem either

ThibaultLapers,
@ThibaultLapers@mstdn.io avatar

@jon Weird. I mean the press release in July last year stated indeed a cooperation but the word SNCF completely disappeared on the last one in March. Have they given up? There were reports that it was to become a "OUIGO Train Classique" but not to be seen anywhere...

@jon I haven't really got the opportunity to ride on this route even during my Erasmus in Groningen a year ago. However, I'm still surprised on how this route isn't double tracked and electrified. It was the best moment to do so.

But I saw also that 2 stations are to open as well, after the reopening

@jon@gruene.social avatar

Why are 🚆 routes like
Paris - Bruxelles 🇧🇪
Paris - Zürich 🇨🇭
Paris - Barcelona 🇪🇸
so damned expensive?

It is NOT (in the main) because of track access charges

It is because supply is too low, and there is neither the public accountability / state owned railway ethos to increase capacity, and NOR is there a rival to the state incumbent to compete

Paris - Lille uses most of same track as to Bruxelles, but is much cheaper - because national accountability
Paris - Milano better because competition

Soon (maybe next week) I’m going to write a huge explainer - an answer to all these bullshit stories about services through the Channel Tunnel, and what will or will not happen

In the bullshit world of railway industry PR and “journalism”, stories about the tunnel are the worst of all

Sod. Main Alpine rail route France-Italy likely to be closed all of next summer 😭 Link via @ThibaultLapers https://www.railtech.com/infrastructure/2023/11/07/france-italy-frejus-railway-closure-extended-until-end-of-2024/?gdpr=accept

Could France and Italy maybe work on an alternative InterCity service via Ventimiglia? Or is that more than these two would be capable of doing?

Either SNCB’s app is striking in solidarity with the railway workers. Or - more likely - so many people are trying to work out if their train is running the systems are overloaded and not working for all…

🎉 Train strike tomorrow in Belgium

SNCB website says ICE10 Frankfurt-Bruxelles is cancelled

DB still has it running, and even with high load

(I am trying to go to Bruxelles tomorrow, but using a regional train from Aachen - no idea currently if that one will run)

ICE10 running according to DB

ThibaultLapers,
@ThibaultLapers@mstdn.io avatar

@jon Trains are running tmrw. The strike only begins at 22 so ICE can enter Belgium tmrw but might be not allowed to leave Belgium the next day

ThibaultLapers,
@ThibaultLapers@mstdn.io avatar

@jon Yes but I guess that both trains are running on Wednesday back to Germany so they might not be allowed to leave Belgium (meaning that DB has two trains less for both days)

Vilnius 🇱🇹 - Riga 🇱🇻 train to run “next year”, via Šiauliai

And a route via Turmantas, Daugavpils also under discussion

I’ve heard similar ideas before - only for it to not happen. Dare I hope this will work?

Interesting news via @bvlg

The Germanophone parliament of Belgium is keen to re-activate the Eupen-Stolberg line - see this news story https://lpost.be/2023/10/26/la-communaute-germanophone-veut-une-meilleure-connexion-ferroviaire-et-relancer-la-ligne-eupen-stolberg/

Germany is already working to re-open Stolberg Altstadt - Breinig, but there would need to be some work at the viaduct beyond Breinig that is in a bad state (my drone picture of it here)

But it's good there is some movement Belgian side of the border!

Errr, this is a peculiar one

Chinese workers have been withdrawn from the rebuilding of the Budapest - Belgrade railway line, and the project is on hold... because the Chinese apparently don't know how to fit the ETCS signalling system

That Chinese money was being used for this was an odd geopolitical decision anyway, but why was the signalling not subcontracted to a firm that actually knows how to do that?

TGV timetables 🤬

3 hour gap with no trains in the middle of the day between Strasbourg and Paris. Damn why can France not do Takt / clock-face timetables?

This would not happen on ANY ICE LINE ANYWHERE IN GERMANY

@jon The same reason of why Bourgogne-Franche-Comté doesn't want to invest, they hate this kind of service.

But they are also assholes...
