Why are 🚆 routes like
Paris - Bruxelles 🇧🇪
Paris - Zürich 🇨🇭
Paris - Barcelona 🇪🇸
so damned expensive?
It is NOT (in the main) because of track access charges
It is because supply is too low, and there is neither the public accountability / state owned railway ethos to increase capacity, and NOR is there a rival to the state incumbent to compete
Paris - Lille uses most of same track as to Bruxelles, but is much cheaper - because national accountability
Paris - Milano better because competition
@matt Indeed, and to get to Basel you can often save a load by getting off in Mulhouse and hopping on a TER. But what’s the consequence of this sky high price you rightly point out? NOTHING. For the French it's that thing rich Swiss take. For the Swiss it's a nice to have to Paris, not a must have. So everyone lives with a sub-standard outcome, because no one is accountable so as to make it better.
