Why I don’t use the Oxford Comma:

“Flutter apps can work on Android, iOS, Windows, Linux, and Mac OS, and the Flutter UI and rendering engine, included with every app, translates everything to the OS layer.”

The Oxford comma before “and Mac OS” means that one can’t easily discern the end of the list. If, instead, it read “…Windows, Linux and Mac OS, and the Flutter UI and rendering engine,“ one would know that the Flutter UI and rendering engine were not part of the list but a separate clause.

So. In a moment of complete madness, I have decided to take only some of my collection of analogue cameras to photograph the next aurora display over Hoopers Inlet. i'll take a Pentax ME Super, A Pentax 6x7, a Canon EOS 3 and also a Tomiyama 6x12. The 35mm will be shooting at ISO 400 and the 120 cameras will shoot Portia 800.

@iangriffin I cut my photography teeth on a Pentax ME Super. I still shoot with a Pentax DSLR

I remember when Stuff (the NZ news site) used to serve content as HTML. Those were good days. Since Stuff's latest "upgrade" I haven't been able to load it on any of my devices.

No, I don't fancy turning off my security settings or ad-blockers. If the price of that is not reading Stuff any more, I'll pay that. I wonder how many others are in the same situation?

Brisbane is the same size as Auckland. This is how you get to the airport in Brisbane. In NZ we can’t even get political consensus to build a few km of line from Manukau to AKL.

I want a minimal network attached storage device, it doesn’t need any bays, a single disk would suffice, just an Ethernet port and software so I can plug it into the router. This used to be a trivial ask, but my 12 year old NAS died and there doesn’t seem to be a simple replacement.

Any ideas?

ThisCJ,
@ThisCJ@mastodon.nz avatar

@billbennett Raspberry Pi with a USB attached SSD?

ThisCJ,
@ThisCJ@mastodon.nz avatar

@billbennett What are you plugging the USB device into? One possibility is that it doesn't have the current available for an HDD or SSD. If you have a USB powered hub try interposing that @karora

ThisCJ,
@ThisCJ@mastodon.nz avatar

@billbennett @karora Bill, it may depend how the SSD is formatted. The router is probably expecting something boring like FAT32 or whatever modern Windows uses. If it's formatted for MacOS the router may not recognise it. You could verify that in the router docs and reformat using MacOD Disk Utility if necessary

ThisCJ,
@ThisCJ@mastodon.nz avatar

@billbennett @karora For what it's worth I have a media server in my travel kit composed of a RPi4 w/official power supply and a Samsung 1TB SSD plugged to a USB3 port. It works fine. I can see it as an SMB server on the network and load files on. Playback is by VLC on an AppleTV. It's not the fastest file server ever but it's enough to stream 4K video.

I've tried using an HDD instead of the SSD but the RPi doesn't have enough power to drive it.

Do I understand the big picture correctly?

… if SpaceX makes billions in profit (largely by selling Starlink subscriptions) Elon Musk will spend the money leading an elite cohort of right-wing nut jobs on what would almost certainly be a one way mission to Mars.

My bank's site loads slowly, so I switch to other tabs in Firefox while it's loading; however, the site has some script to determine if its tab has focus, and it suspends loading if it's not the tab I'm looking at. How do I trick the website into thinking I'm looking at its tab?

It’s time @NewshubNZ fessed up to being Seymour’s comms team. The dude is never off their homepage

ThisCJ,
@ThisCJ@mastodon.nz avatar

@BobReynard This reflects the leader of the opposition being unable to do anything other criticise the government (“chaotic!”, “botched!”) without coming up with any intersting to say himself. What Luxon says is predictable and uninteresting. Seymour manages to take interesting positions and gets reported for it. (PS that doesn’t mean I agree with Seymour. Just explaining that he’s getting air time by beating National)
