Vorticity,

Republicans support many things with higher potential for fraud and abuse than school lunch programs. Privatized prisons come to mind.

Vorticity,

This is why you at least do minimal training on your model before forcing the public to use it. I think this is the future of customer service. Poorly trained AI models that have no idea how to actually help with anything.

Vorticity,

That is wild! The craziest part is that he was able to convince a court that he had a right to live in the hotel for free indefinitely. If he hadn’t tried to pull the “I own this now” shit, he could have lived rent free in Manhattan forever from the sounds of things.

This nutjob actually found a real loophole and exploited it, then shot himself in the foot by getting greedy. I assume he’s been evicted at this point.

Vorticity,

Honestly, don’t look for consistent logic in the sov cit community. Your brain will break.

Vorticity,

Wow, $2 for a pack of cigarettes. I’m glad it’s not that cheap here. It would have made it harder for me to quit!

Vorticity,

Does anyone know of a good /r/askscience-like community on Lemmy? I’ve got lots of questions about horseshoe crabs.

I’ve never read much about horseshoe crabs before. I knew they were interesting, but they’re fascinating! Here’s a good summary of some of what we know about them: earthdate.org/…/horseshoe-crabs-living-fossils

Interestingly, because their environment is replete with bacteria and their circulatory system makes them particularly prone to infection, they have developed a zero-tolerance immune system. It kills anything it finds that is abnormal.

I wonder how much impact their immune system has on their stagnant evolution. Does killing all intruders reduce the likelihood of mutations by disallowing viruses and the mutations that they bring? Does their immune system know what their DNA should look like and immediately kill any mutations that it finds?

Vorticity,

Viruses have smuggled enough DNA into our DNA that 8% of the human genome is thought to derive from these events. Maybe that’s not the primary source of evolution, but it is a source of evolution.

Vorticity,

Thank you, this was really interesting. I was trying to look up more information on “stabilimorphs” but google pulls up nothing on the term. I’m wondering what causes them to continue mutating in such a stable way. Are they simply that well adapted that they’ve fallen into a stable configuration that has no instability in any of the many dimensions available or is there something else that is maintaining their physical configuration while mutations continue to occur?

Vorticity,

I’m curious about a bunch of things here.

  • What country are you from?
  • What does it mean for parents to be required to support their children for life?
  • What does it mean for kids to be required to support their parents for life? Support in what way?
  • What happens if the family doesn’t get along with one another? Support in what way?
  • What repercussions are there if someone chooses not to fulfill their familial obligations?
  • What happens if someone is financially unable to fulfill their familial obligations?
Vorticity,

I don’t really disagree, but I think that was the original intent of the meme; to show Crowder as a complete chode by having him assert really stupid, deeply unpopular ideas.

The meme’s use has become too soft on Crowder lately, though, I think.

Vorticity,

This is a secular country.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of people in this country who disagree. They try to twist the words of the founders to imply freedom of Christian religion. Even some of my more reasonable family members, who won’t be voting for Trump, still think this is a Christian nation.

Vorticity,

I’m largely unfamiliar with the Church of Satan. How does the Church of Satan differ from The Satanic Temple?

Vorticity, (edited )

He’s not completely there for himself, though this trip is certainly self serving or he would do it. He’s there to put his weight behind a candidate for Mitt Romney’s senate seat. A MAGAT who has been endorsed by Trump.

Not if you disabled the sound so you could sneakily get online at night without your parents noticing! I was so happy when I figured that out and could quit nervously smothering the modem in pillows when connecting.

I don’t know if that always worked. I didn’t figure it out until we were on a 56k modem. Maybe it didn’t work with older modems.

Vorticity,

I think the Sunday cartoons were always outside the main story line because many people only read the Sunday comics.

I don’t like parades…

Well, then don’t go to them.

Fascist!

Ummm…

In seriousness, I don’t think that the person you were replying to was saying “You’re excluded.” They were trying to say “Okay, you don’t like them and think they shouldn’t happen. In that case, don’t go to them and don’t support them.” You’re not obligated to like the same things that the rest of the LGBT community likes. That seems pretty reasonable and the opposite of fascism.

In fact, I’d say you are perfectly within your rights to vocally express your distaste for Pride parades. It’s reasonable to find them distasteful while still supporting the LGBT community. You could also voice what you dislike about them and what you’d like to see change so that they better support what you’d like them to achieve for the community. I don’t think that you’d be within your rights to actually stop the parades from happening, just like I don’t think others would be within their rights to force you to attend.

Vorticity,

Not everyone in any community is going to agree on the correct methods of achieving common goals. You’re free to try to change how the community’s approach. You’re free to try to build your own approach. You’re also free to decide whether you want to participate or not.

I don’t see how any of that excludes anyone, disengages from productive dialogue, or leads to right-wingers thinking that left-wingers are fascists.

You are talking about disengaging from dialogue, but I don’t see you actually engaging in it yourself. You stated “I dislike Pride parades”, then said it is exclusionary to suggest that you maybe could just choose not to attend. What I didn’t see you say until well after my original comment is what you would like to see changed about the parades or engaging with others about how that might be achieved.

the nose is maybe strangely small, lips are a little off-putting

Well, I mean… It’s not THAT far off, is it?

Well, I mean…

It’s not THAT far off, is it?

Vorticity,

I keep hearing random statistics about sources of microplastics and have no idea what to believe at this point. Just yesterday I saw something saying that 78% of microplastics come from tires.

Vorticity,

Loose leaf is excessively packaged? Normally when I buy loose leaf I just get a tin that’s full of tea and nothing else.

Vorticity,

I’d rather just buy loose leaf and use a washable strainer. It’s generally less expensive and higher quality too.

Vorticity,

Please please please! Aldi’s would kill in CO, especially if the Kroger/Albertsons merger goes through. I kind of hope Aldi’s stays out of CO until we know if the merger will go through, though. Their presence would weaken the case against the merger.

Vorticity,

Here’s the thing. Right wing media will simply ignore this. Most republican voters won’t be informed that their representatives are taking way their right to a safe work environment. I’m not sure if it would change anything if they were aware but they don’t stand a chance when they’re stuck in their echo chamber.

Vorticity,

I’m just starting to get to do this. Mine is 1 y/o and it’s so much fun to slowly “chase” him and “catch” him as he toddles around!
