WastedJobe,

Today on “Tech company uses horrible vision of the future from science fiction as marketing for their own horrible vision of the future”:

WastedJobe,

He’s got a point though, these sound more like ‘online article on tech website’ phrases, less like a community post. Not meant to be insulting, I just like to analyse language.

WastedJobe,

Audio Engineer here. Not sure Ardour can open video, but it’s a capable DAW and open source. Reaper is closed source but it can open (and even render) pretty much any video format. To actually seperate a single voice, you do need additional plugins though, no matter which DAW you’re using.
I think iZotope RX could do it, but it is fairly expensive. I haven’t seen any open source audio tools that can do this at all. It is pretty much guaranteed to require some kind of machine learning, as parametrically seperating by EQ or phase won’t work if you have only one source signal (even with two or more microphones, it would be really, really hard).
A very good spectral editor might technically work, it would however take several days of manually deleting select frequencies on an almost single sample level and still sound bad, especially if the noise is nearly the same level as the signal.

WastedJobe,

My engineering friends and me propose that physicists should be referred to as theoretical engineers.

WastedJobe,

How did he get performance based bonuses when his company isn’t profitable?

How is it possible for this track to have so few plays on Spotify? (lemmy.one)

I noticed that the track “Canon (Primo)” by Justice only has 5,815 plays on Spotify, even though every other track on the album has millions of plays. How is this possible? I know it’s just an interlude track that you wouldn’t listen to unless you’re listening to the full album, but still, this play count seems...

WastedJobe,

AFAIK to count as one play, a song needs to be played for more than 30 seconds (source: friend used to work at a record label), so to me it’s surprising it has any plays at all.

WastedJobe,

Isn’t arithmetic a class in Hogwarts and just a fancy word for maths (not a native speaker)? I think only Hermione takes it though and it’s only mentioned in the books.

WastedJobe,

Ackchually my OS is GNU/Linux/systemd/Gnome/Fedora/Wayland/dnf/flatpak or something, did I forget one? idgaf

WastedJobe,

Aritificial Gravity is probably part of the system that prevents everyone from going splat against the window Maneo style when they leave warp. Without inertial dampening you couldn’t move ships basically at all, so these systems are probably passive.

Paramount+ confirms series order for 'Starfleet Academy' (www.startrek.com)

While there was an announcement shortly before the WGA strike, and Alex Kurtzman confirmed the writers room is back up and at work during an NYCC panel, Paramount+ is moving forward on promotional information about the forthcoming new ‘Starfleet Academy’ show....

WastedJobe,

I really hope it’s good, but I just really would rather see a series set on the Enterprise G or maybe a show that doesn’t rely on well-known characters at all. Anyone wanna convince me Starfleet Academy will be great?

WastedJobe,

How is Putin deciding to invade Ukraine (which he started in 2014 btw) largely Trumps fault?

WastedJobe,

Absolutely. I would prefer they didn’t have google as the default, but I’d rather have Firefox with good funding and google as default than firefox with very little funding.

WastedJobe,

“In bed with”=takes their money to have their search engine and lets you change it in 30 seconds while being completely open source

I don’t see the problem.

What is the point of Flatpak, AppImage, Snap, etc?

I don’t understand what problem they are meant to solve. If you have a FOSS piece of software, you can install it via the package manager. Or the store, which is just a frontend for the package manager. I see that they are distribution-independent, but the distro maintainers likely already know what’s compatible and what...

WastedJobe,

It takes work off both the distro maintainers and the developers of the software, because they only need to provide a single package that works anywhere instead of packages for every single distro.

WastedJobe,

Or satire? Please tell me it’s satire.

WastedJobe,

This entire thread looks like everyone who stopped using Linux over 2 or 3 years ago should have another look at it, so many (now) none-issues.

WastedJobe,
