Weirdfish,

TIL that both Voyager craft are still operating, simply amazing.

Weirdfish,

Best known for his work as the poet in episode 2 of Lexx.

Weirdfish,

I’ve skated and hung out with a lot of pro skaters over the years at various demos, but the one who is probably most universally recognized is Bam Margera.

It’s either him or Ben Bernanke, the ex federal reserve chair.

Weirdfish,

I’ve sunk hundreds of dollars into Rocksmith 2014 on ps4 to learn to play the bass.

The game, DLC songs, two guitars,as preamp, and cables.

I absolutely love it, and feel I am still getting better over time.

It so saddens me to know that one day Ubisoft will shit down the servers and a that investment will go to waste.

From everything I’ve read Rocksmith+, their subscription model new version, just sucks in comparison to 2014, and I hate that their answer to people wanting to play games they ready own is “Well, just play the new one”.

Loved farcry 2, 3, and 5, hated farcry 6.

While I’ll always be able to play 2 and 3 from disc on my PS3, 5 will one day crap out as well I’m sure.

Companies who take servers required for single player games offline should be required to either patch the game, or release the server source code.

Weirdfish,

I caught it very early, before the vaccine, and the only symptom I didn’t get was having such a hard time breathing as to require a hospital.

I sat alone, at home, in my lazy boy, and suffered. Like others have said, lots of fluid and lots of sleep were the only things that helped. I can’t think of another time in my life I slept that much.

Two of my brothers who had it both failed to recognize or acknowledge they had it, and both had bad falls, one breaking his arm, and the other requiring stitches in his scalp. Be very aware when walking around for signs of fatigue or light headedness.

Weirdfish,

It’s trying to drag it down to their level to legitimize belief.

Take for example a panel with a priest, a rabbi, and a mullah. They can debate faith and mysticism all day and night because they are playing by the same rules.

Introduce an atheist or scientist who says “I don’t know, and more importantly, neither do you”. It shatters their LARP experience.

By turning science and atheism into just another mystic belief system it makes theirs seem just another valid option between equals.

Don’t let people make this false equivalence, faith and mysticism starts with “This is what I believe, and reality has to conform”, where science starts with “Reality exists, and what I believe will change and be shaped by our understanding of it.”

Weirdfish,

See, this is exactly the false equivalence I was speaking of. Theism is the one making the ridiculous claim, and by stating both are non-falsifiable and not testable, implying both are equally likely.

There is not a shred of proof for a deity, so any claims made in the name of any god can be dismissed as the ravings of lunatics.

On both the macroscopic and microscopic scales, science has pushed the boundaries of knowledge many orders of magnitude beyond that which was available to the people who made up these gods. At no point has a single claim been found to be true, and many have been found to be false.

Is the new Fallout TV show depressing?

I get pretty easy depressed watching TV shows with a depressing tone or a lot of character deaths or that. If its more in the background its generally fine, but things like Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, and The Boys are a lot for the moment. How does the new Fallout show compare?...

Weirdfish,

There are a lot of both dark themes and on screen deaths and violence, many of which are pretty graphic.

Fallout as a franchise is well known for some pretty horrific elements, often painted over with bright colors and upbeat music, but horrific all the same.

If Game of Thrones or The Boys were too much for you, then Fallout certianly is.

That said, it is an absolutely brilliant and faithful adaptation of the source material, and as a long time fan of the games, I loved every minute of it.

Weirdfish,

I’ll admit, I’m not deep enough of a lore whore to pick out the retcons.

This is the futherest in the future as far as timeline goes, so watch the show to see who controls the region now and what happened to said faction.

Weirdfish,

It’s like someone who keeps pointing out “Yeah, but we’re also running low on food!” on an spacecraft that is almost out of air.

True, these are both problems, but one is a MUCH bigger immediate threat and needs to be solved before we can spend time on the other, and doing nothing simply isn’t the correct option.

Weirdfish,

Agreed, I started in electronics repair in the 90s, and began learning to code in 2004. 20 years and over a dozen languages later and I feel I am still learning to code.

People say that programming jobs are going to go away because of LLMs, but I don’t see it, at least not any time soon.

They have been trying to eliminate programmers in my primary language since before I started, and I still have steady work.

The thought that a large number of people from non-tech backgrounds can just become proficient programmers in a reasonable amount of time is of course insane. I’ve known many very talented techs who burned out and gave up trying to learn to program.

Something has to be done, and I don’t pretend for a moment I have any answers. I have traveled through many small towns all around the US, and the decline in the past 10 years or so is really depressing to see.

Weirdfish,

This is certiably a phrase / concept the world would be better off without.

Takes two of my least favorite things, mysticism and internet points, and rolls them into a real shit sandwich

Weirdfish,

Somehow I had missed that Bannerlord has come to consoles, been waiting for this one a long time.

Sequels often disappoint, but so far this one strikes a great balance between keeping what made the original fun, incorporating new ideas, and adding a ton of quality of life features that fix what made the original a bit frustrating.

Obviously porting this kind of game to a controller is a huge task, and over all they did a good job. Some of the map and menu navigation is a bit clunky, but in almost every way it’s better than warband.

Looking forward to never being able to finish this one either.

Weirdfish,

That is still one of the most surreal moments to come out of that whole mess.

I just don’t understand how it was allowed to play out. At some point, someone had to decide that going ahead with it was more important than waiting a day and finding a suitable location.

For the life of me I can’t remember what the press conference was about, only the screw up.

Is it a bad idea to introduce a new kitten to a house where there is already an older cat?

In recent days we have been giving home to a black kitten less than a month old yet to be named, the thing is that we already have a cat at home. My cat “Rubia” has been with us for 13 years now, beyond having lost her eyesight due to age, she is very healthy. But since the new kitty arrived I have seen her very stressed....

Weirdfish,

My cat was 16 or so years old and in good health, though pretty under weight, when we brought in a 6 week old kitten.

Having been a loner all her life, she wasn’t so happy to have the kitten around, but left her be. My only concern was the kitten was so small she might kill her.

By 18 months, the kitten was larger than my senior cat, but had been put in her place so many times they mostly left each other alone.

Occasionally they’d scrap a bit, but that was just the kitten wanting to play and the old one hissing and swatting her away. Honestly, I think it gave her some needed excercise to be chased around a bit and stalked.

I made sure they each had their own food, water, and litter box, and there never was any real issue.

They both had their spots, the kitten up top of the cat tree, and the old lady in her bed. I think so long as they have enough room to get away from each other it will be fine. They never became friends, but they learned to live and let live well enough. It even reached the point they could both sit with me on the couch and not fight.

Had to put the older cat down a few weeks ago, and as sad as that was, it was very nice to have the kitten at home so the house didn’t feel so empty.

Weirdfish,

I use three at the office, and two at home.

In both setups the laptop is my keyboard and small screen, above it is a 34 inch 21/9 aspect ratio curved display. At the office I also have a standard monitor off to the side.

The large screen is my primary work space, with various code editors, UI dev tools, web browser, reference docs, and terminal windows.

The laptop screen has email, all my short cuts, and a virtual version of the UI I’m working on because it is also a touch screen.

When I have the third screen I use it for teams, a few system monitoring tools, and youtube for music.

I used dual side by side monitors for years, but found that having the split in the center meant I was always sitting with my neck turned, and this lead to a lot of pain and headaches. Having them top / bottom is a lot more comfortable and my large screen is high enough I now sit up straight.

A curved screen at the right distance also means a lot less eye strain.

Weirdfish,

I get it from my father. He was one of the smartest people I’ve ever known, but if you asked him anything, you better have a lot of free time cause it is going back to first principles.

I know his reasoning was that he wanted me to learn how to understand and find the answer, not just be given it, and now I’m guilty of the same thing.

I don’t do it at work, or at least I try not to, as they are paying me for the solution not a dissertation, but if friends or family ask for tech support, they are getting the whole explanation while I solve the problem.

I guess another part of it is that like me, he really didn’t have anyone to talk tech to other than his family, and really just enjoyed the time being able to share things he was knowledgeable about.

Weirdfish,

The Souls series, subnautica, and Hitman all do this well. Minimal story, skippable cut scenes, and fantastic gameplay and environments.

In all of them you can dig deeper if you want, but it’s almost always optional.

There have been very few games where the story is what grabs me, I want fun and engaging gameplay and character development (stats, perks, weapons, etc).

The one exception is Mass Effect, but that game just has everything.

Weirdfish,

I love my job, I really do, but I wouldn’t do it as a hobby. I don’t think it’s so much advice about making your hobbies a career, as it is about finding work you enjoy.

Video games, skateboarding, riding a motorcycle, all things I love, but no way I’d try to make a living at any of them.

Weirdfish,

Subnatica. Every element of this game just fits together perfectly to create an atmosphere of isolated desperate survival.

Weirdfish,

They are looking for a reaction, and if they get one from me, I give them a mental thumbs up.

If it’s just being a dick to be a dick, I ignore it and go on with my day.

What I absolutely never do is engage.

Weirdfish,

I really need to get over the early learning curve and get into this game.

I’ve tried a few times and don’t know why it doesn’t engage me.

Give it another try tonight.

Weirdfish,

My landlord assured me I’d be able to rent this place for years.

A few days ago he tells me he’s selling it, and that I need to move by June 1st, when my lease is until September.

I could fight it, but for what? A few extra months? No point in that headache.

I was hoping to rent a few years till I could buy it, as it is in my home town and near both work and family.

With the crazy rent prices today I’m going to have to move over an hour further just to find a smaller place at similar price.

Weirdfish,

So, the first 30 minutes go like this. Find the stuff to make and craft the knife, scanner, fins, air tanks, and building tool.

You can eat kelp and make bleach>water w salt and coral to stay alive, though it’s a LOT of kelp.

Then head straight to southern island to scan the multipurpose room, indoor and outdoor grow beds, and grab lantern fruit and marble mellons.

You can then build a base and grow all the food you will ever need. I stock up on a ton of bleach and make water as needed, though the food also restores some hydration.

I usually have this done before the Aurora explodes.

Once you have the cyclops you can plant in there as well. Three lantern fruit trees per base is all the food you will need in the game, and marble melons have a lot of water.

The only thing you miss out on really is the emergency air bladder, as that requires a fish. To make up for it I carry a second air tank when diving deep or exploring wrecks. I also build outdoor grow beds w brain corals in strategic places as emergency air supplies.

Honestly, I started it as a lark, and found it so enjoyable because I never get distracted chasing down and catching fish.

Weirdfish,

No, haven’t seen it, but will check it out.
