If Wizards hadn't lost me already, their "Collectible Alt-art Cover" would have done it.

Pick one gods-damned cover.

This isn't the 1990's and you aren't a comic book company. Alt covers didn't work at $3.00 a pop. It ain't gonna work at whatever astronomical price gouge you're going with, ya greedy bastards.

WhatDoIKnowJR,
@WhatDoIKnowJR@dice.camp avatar

@Tim_Eagon @Craig @DM_Zeppelin You can't buy them direct. There are some online stores that maintain a physical storefront that gives them access to the alt covers.

After hearing some discussion on this, I'm curious to gather some data. If you are interested in responding to a survey on the a la carte purchases on D&D Beyond, please consider filling this out.

Thanks!

New today, where Ang and I talk about Sci-Fi elements in D&D, both historically, and what kind of tools you have in if you want to add it into your games now.

@DarkplaneDM @darjr They were good questions, but no follow up questions. Cocks provided non-answer deflections and they let him move on to the next topic.

@bedirthan @DarkplaneDM @darjr I mean, it may be just me, but I would be more than willing to skip a few topics to get a CEO to try to defend getting a pay increase the same year that the company laid off 1000 people and took a big loss.

Randomly finding out what 4e books I actually owned by looking through old pictures. I picked up Menzoberranzan and the Neverwinter Campaign Guide later on, back in the days when I couldn't buy PDFs of anything. Sadly I don't have these anymore, because I don't have infinite space.

This part of the ICV2 analysis of the hobby game channel falling off in sales is strange to me. Were there people saying "I wanted to get the most recent release but they just can't pull box office?" If movie box office negates sales, why doesn't video game sales increase them?

Just to clarify, I'm not saying sales AREN'T down, just that this felt like some strange speculation.

The Rotten Tomatoes ranking for D&D: Honor Among Thieves, showing 91% reviewer score and 93% audience score.

WhatDoIKnowJR,
@WhatDoIKnowJR@dice.camp avatar

@Tim_Eagon But if THIS specifically was accurate, it's not that they didn't get a bump from people buying products after seeing the movie, it's that people that would have already bought D&D stuff instead decided not to buy D&D stuff due to poor box office.

WhatDoIKnowJR,
@WhatDoIKnowJR@dice.camp avatar

@Tim_Eagon "I didn't want to go see the movie in theaters, but I enjoyed it when I watched it on streaming. But there's no way that book about giants is any good if they couldn't pull together the marketing to make this movie do Marvel numbers."

WhatDoIKnowJR,
@WhatDoIKnowJR@dice.camp avatar

@Tim_Eagon Yeah, I have no idea how the same logic for sales dropping from the movie's performance doesn't apply to BG3 raising sales.

WhatDoIKnowJR,
@WhatDoIKnowJR@dice.camp avatar

@bedirthan @Alphastream @Tim_Eagon I would be really interested to see if there is a shift from hobby sales to traditional retail, especially with games like the Avatar RPG, Marvel Multiverse, and D&D having a presence in big box stores.

Can you watch the new X-Men '97 show without having watched the original cartoon series?

WhatDoIKnowJR,

@Tim_Eagon Yes*

*Knowing some of the 80s/90s X-Men storylines, if you haven't watched the 90s series, is probably going to help out a bit.

WhatDoIKnowJR,
@WhatDoIKnowJR@dice.camp avatar

@Tim_Eagon They get remixed a bit, but the bones are there, and will probably communicate the crux of what they are presenting.

@Alphastream Yeah, there is one thing that happens, that if it happened in a movie or TV series, it would be like "what!?! how can that be? I want to keep watching to see how it's true," that in an RPG setting could easily come across as "Oh, the GM didn't want to change the adventure so they're just ignoring what happened in the last session."

There is also the "okay, what do I do in the middle of this adventure if none of my players think it would be fun for them to do X for several scenes?"

WhatDoIKnowJR,
@WhatDoIKnowJR@dice.camp avatar

@Alphastream The overall plots are doing what I hoped, and not glossing over the moral complexity of the setting. I really didn't want this to be like, oh, say, the Minority Report TV series that decided for an ongoing narrative it would be really cool to say that actually the opposite of what the movies thesis is true.

WhatDoIKnowJR,
@WhatDoIKnowJR@dice.camp avatar

@Alphastream What's weird is, later they do that with another NPC, where if X happened, the PCs just don't encounter Y, and I liked that, because it felt like you could be reactive to what the PCs played through.

WhatDoIKnowJR, to Dragonlance
@WhatDoIKnowJR@dice.camp avatar

I wonder if the board game aspect of the Dragonlance adventure hurt sales. I don't mean, if the game iteself didn't sell, or even if the bundles with the game didn't sell, but if the book itself would have sold better if the board game never existed.

I can't help but think, even if boardgame wasn't required for the adventure, people felt like it would be incomplete without it, and they weren't interested in the boardgame, so they even skipped the "book only" option.

Wizards of the Coast has a new D&D survey as part of the 50th anniversary celebration.

As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of D&D we want to know what you think about the game with a quick survey!

✍️ Click the following link to access the survey! (estimated time: 2-5 minutes): http://spr.ly/6181k8FA9

WhatDoIKnowJR,
@WhatDoIKnowJR@dice.camp avatar

@wyrmworksdale @dragoncrown @slyflourish @Alphastream @darjr I was just thinking that they would probably have gotten more complete results if this included Hasbro. If, for example, someone were upset about the layoffs, and it affects their view on D&D, that doesn't live anywhere in this survey.

WhatDoIKnowJR,
@WhatDoIKnowJR@dice.camp avatar

@Alphastream @wyrmworksdale @dragoncrown @slyflourish @darjr maybe, but we don't know why they want the data. They could very easily be trying to take the temperature of what influencers and the very online are saying so they can circumvent trends that they can see. Not saying this survey was good for that either.

WhatDoIKnowJR,
@WhatDoIKnowJR@dice.camp avatar

@Alphastream @wyrmworksdale @dragoncrown @slyflourish @darjr I don't disagree, but this survey felt less like "we need data for a long term plan," and more like "okay, how much damage control are we still doing?"

Lots of people are reckless with half-remembered information when on social media. They don't worry about the consequences to the reputations of people or organizations that recklessness causes. If you're going to remind people of a BAD THING someone did, make sure you're accusing the right entity.
