Have a great rest of your week! Here's your Monday's ice update - #Arctic sea ice extent is currently the 14th lowest on record (JAXA data)...
• about 110,000 km² above the 2010s mean
• about 290,000 km² below the 2000s mean
• about 820,000 km² below the 1990s mean
• about 1,300,000 km² below the 1980s mean
@ZLabe just out of curiousity: That 2024 curve ist going wildly zigzag compared to the other lines. What does that mean? What are scientists thinking about it?
@grootinside This is expected, as the other solid colored lines are decadal averages, which smooth out the day-to-day variability. If you look very closely, there are thin gray lines, which display each year from 2002 to 2023 and are also very zigzagy.
Enjoy your weekend! Here's your Friday ice update - #Arctic sea ice extent is currently the 15th lowest on record (JAXA data)...
• about 150,000 km² above the 2010s mean
• about 240,000 km² below the 2000s mean
• about 780,000 km² below the 1990s mean
• about 1,240,000 km² below the 1980s mean
While most of the region surrounding the sea ice edge is experiencing above average sea surface temperatures as of March 2024, the record ocean warmth globally has not been clearly observed in the Arctic region.
