How does data sent over the internet know where to go?

I saw a map of undersea internet cables the other day and it’s crazy how many branches there are. It got me wondering - if I’m (based in the UK) playing an online game from someone in Japan for example, how is the route worked out? Does my ISP know that to get to place X, the data has to be routed via cable 1, cable 2 etc....

Zippy,

Comments are correct here with one missing high level component for routers. That is the very top level routers are designed for tier 1. I started an internet company and we got large enough to decide to become a tier 1 provider. There is one big difference in this configuration is that we publish our own blocks of IPs and we listen for published IPs. We have routers that essentially maintained a list of where all the IPs or block of IPs worldwide needed to go. More importantly, I would send out a list of my IP blocks that would propagate across all the tier 1 routers across the world. That could take an hour but more likely minutes.

Having this allowed me to essentially connect to the internet at zero cost. There is some cost to be assigned IPs but I was trusted. While I say zero cost, I still had to pay for large bandwidth dark fiber to new York or other major meet me points. I also had to pay rack space to put a tier1 router into these buildings. But what is really gives me is the ability to have multiple connections to the pipes and because I publish my own IPs, I can balance all the routes and other providers can find the best way to me thru a process called weighing. Also if I loose a connection which is rare at this level, I could rapidly and automatically republish my route on working connections and usually within 15 minutes, all the routers in the world would know. 15 minutes actually is likely long. These days 5 minutes.

Now the interesting part of this, I publish my own IPs. I have to be extremely careful as with a single stroke, I could say I own all the IPs to China. Well likely a few strokes. I certainly could make a simple mistake and take control of a shit load of IPs. That means suddenly traffic could come to me that was destined for another country. More correct, because they are publishing, it would just make a mess and take some IPs down. If I publish a big block in China, I would essentially DOS myself because the pipe sizes I buy are factors smaller. Now this is a trusted system because we all connect together randomly. There is and can not be any central control as we all need to publish freely for this to work. But if I were to screw up and say divert a shit load of IPs destined to say Washington, it would rapidly be figured out and I would rapidly be determined to not be trusted. I would be shut down physically at some point.

Essentially I have fairly normal routers with one feature that allows them to dynamically keep track of all the routes worldwide and to periodically publish all the IPs I own.

Zippy,

I don’t think it should negate you from running for high office but it should make people consider who they vote for.

Zippy,

Well he could fly over here and deliver it on person. Hopefully that route passes over Ukraine.

Zippy,

Well pay taxes if you sell at a profit. Hard to say if the value of his assets increased.

Zippy,

Considering I do that yearly you don’t pay taxes on 25,000 but only on profit. You will write off a percentage of a capitalized item like that per year. The only way you would pay taxes above what you have expenses is if somehow that 50,000 dollar car sells for more then 50,000. That is likely not happening.

Zippy,

Mostly due to internet and pretty much every violent crime is publicized. No matter if it is across the country.

What is more funny, or sad maybe, this generation is helicoptering their children far more than past generations even though crime is far lower. I walked alone to and from kindergarten 6 blocks. Now someone would report you.

Zippy,

They generally do not lie. They simply do not report certain things and over report other things. I have no solution for this or think of a law that could fix it.

Zippy,

The don’t thing is that the term RINO was initially coined for people exactly like Trump.

Zippy,

What they should do is post articles then make the most outages claims so that people feel the necessity to comment.

BTW, Trump deserves to win the presidency. He is by far the most honest.

Zippy,

That is quite incorrect. First the parties have quite different platforms but they overall stay fairly centered. That is if you compare them to most other more extreme governments. Secondly even if you had one hundred parties to choose from, there will be no individual party that will represent your views 100 percent. The point of democracy is not to cater to any single individual but to try and find a middle ground. Yes a bit more variety might be better but at the end of the day you likely would have similar laws and rights.

Western nations are not intimidating or assassinating people with incompatible opinions. Yes there could be improvements to voter suppression but it is extremely limited in effectiveness. The US employees regional representation that does create some popular vote issues but it also fixes some regional issues where people in part can be under represented. So I can understand some argument for the current system.

Perfect no. Anywhere near the problems in Russia and most of the rest of the world, not at all. Get a grip.

Zippy,

When people vote based on nice hair and last name these are the kind of leaders you get. People like Trump, Bush Junior, Trudeau, Arnold Schwarzenegger and almost Hillary Clinton.

Maybe start voting on capability and experience and you might get better governance.

It starting to appear it was Hamas that opened fire on Palestinians waiting for aid.

Zippy,

Who opens them up exactly? And that person who invests in a restaurant will leave some other job resulting in that much less product being built this something rises in price somewhere.

Rent caps just result in less people or corporations investing in rental properties. If you are alread have 90 houses and 100 people want to rent, how does caps encourage more houses?

At the end of the day the only thing that matters is how productive we are in total. Anything that is scarce will be high in price and if you mandate a lower price, then some people will simply not have shelter if you want to use that example.

Zippy,

Talk about inflation spiral. lol

Zippy,

A better question is, would more houses get built and if so, who would build those houses? If not, and there are more people needing houses than houses available, do you not think that the extra money would mean people would be willing to pay more?

Zippy,

Is more funny after you watch it more than once. Walter put everyone in only two categories. Dependable or not. And if you were in the second category, you likely were a pervert or had some other derogatory trait. No way to know if he just spreading rumors or latched onto one.

I wish more directors made shows like this.

Zippy,

Need to get back to silent videos and photos only.

If Trump Drives Haley From the Race, What Will Her Voters Do in November? (www.nytimes.com)

Roughly half of those interviewed, including Ms. Gilman, said that in a Biden-Trump matchup, they would side with the Republican, while expressing varying degrees of discomfort. That number would almost certainly be higher in the actual results of the general election, after Americans have retreated further into partisan...

Zippy,

Some will without question. Few people, be it Democrat or Republican, will vote outside of their party leaning but many people will simply not vote or throw their vote towards some obscure candidate.

Zippy,

AWACS had parachute and some chut you could slide out at one time. Don’t quote me on that entirely. They simply were not worth it. First most accidents happen and have happened on takeoff and landing. No good in that situation. In a war environment, getting hit by a missile, pretty much the only weapon that will take down an AWAC or similar. Missiles likely won’t give crew time to escape. Plane will be doing some kind of tumble. Then you got training. It not simply train once and all good but every year. Sometimes it is better to use that money and time to provide better alternate training that will be more effective. Say for more escort aircraft or better alternate safety systems within the aircraft. You also have the space it takes up resulting in less functionality of your aircraft.

In a large scale world war III scenario, AWACs and similar would be a dangerous plane to crew. Shot down rapidly. In our current warfare situation, they are one of the safer planes to be in. Unless you are Russian and incompetent.

Zippy,

This bill will result in all rental costs increasing slightly. You can legislate anything but the costs will always be one hundred percent covered by those using the services. There is no way around this.

I own pets and love them but I can expect an additional cost to house them.

Zippy,

Renting houses, I would say half the pet owning renters would result in some pet related damage. A rug replacement or scratched wall. Repairable but not expensive. Then there would be one in ten that could do a significant amount of damage. Pee being the biggest one. A rug replacement is free thousand dollars. Let cats pee everywhere and you can have costs exceeding 40,000 dollars.

There is no real easy way to know which renter you have.

Zippy,

You can not force people to become landlords. Pass all the laws you want but that just means fewer and fewer places to rent. Is that hard to understand? What do you think happens when there are 100 houses to rent and 200 families needing shelter? Prices keep rising until it becomes profitable for people to invest money into rental.

What the protection measures result in is pretty much only large commercial operations can be landlords due to the need of someone trained to get the maximum out of renters and have the ability to navigate the courts if they do any damages. We see that already as rental costs rise and low inventory is common in most markets.

Zippy,

It won’t. Will simply result in more damages this increase in overall rent and less people willing to invest in rental properties this fewer homes to rent. Thus a double hit on increased rental rates.

Zippy,

Are you suggesting that they do not pay some monthly fees for said house? Or more important, are you suggesting they won’t have to pay one hundred percent of any damages done to said house? The government or bank will cover that?

Zippy,

I installed internet into people houses for fifteen years. My sample is pretty broad. It is far nastier than most people realize. There majority is decent but it would be close to one in ten is very nasty then another one in ten that will have nice common 'public guest ’ areas but when their basement and different story. It is really hard to tell from the outside and often the people seem normal. Hording is really common but then you get hording wet garbage as well.
