This article profiles how ETS created an accessible rebrand of their website in about two months. I appreciate how from the start they ensured the theme colors and text were accessible. The WebAIM Million study highlights that color contrast is the most common accessibility error. Check out the newest draft of the WCAG 3.0 Guidelines. It is currently in the exploratory phase and the final version will probably be ready sometime between 2026-2028. These new guidelines are meant to apply broadly to devices like wearables and mobile devices, which weren't part of the scope of WCAG 2.0. Content that meets WCAG 2.2 A and AA standards should meet the minimum requirements for WCAG 3.0. https://www.w3.org/TR/wcag-3.0/

Sometimes we forget to celebrate the wins. The original update to the ADA that introduced WCAG standards had an exception for password-protected instructional materials. People from all over wrote to encourage the government to remove this exception. The government listened and the final rule will require public higher education institutions to make their instructional materials accessible. Hopefully, this will apply to all higher education institutions in the future.

This journal article explores computer science professors teaching accessibility. Only half of the 175 institutions surveyed had a professor teaching an accessibility course. The researchers also surveyed 1,857 computer science professors and found that over 10% reported not being knowledgeable about accessibility and over 60% reported some knowledge about accessibility. This highlights a need to educate professors about digital accessibility. https://dl.acm.org/doi/pdf/10.1145/3159450.3159484

Eric Eggert provides a great walkthrough highlighting accessibility issues with the UserWay overlay on a real website. This is why you can’t just slap an accessibility overlay on a website and call it “fully accessible.” Also a lot of the accessibility features offered by the overlay like changing the font or using text to speech a user wouldn’t want to do on a per website basis. *Video has rapid flickering (11:50-14:50). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xtP-gstvHrI
