ahto,

ahto,

Even if you’re downloading the file directly from the URL found in the RSS feed, that doesn’t mean that ads can’t be dynamically injected into the file. A URL like download.my.podcast/episode4.mp3 can still be answered by a script that serves a custom version of the podcast with region specific ads.

ahto,

Always enter and exit the US with your US passport. Not doing so is illegal.

For anything else, use your German passport, especially in the EU. That’s what I have been doing for years.

I don’t know if it is an issue for immigration, but you absolutely are required to file taxes every year and can get in trouble if you don’t. There’s a “streamlined procedure” that you can do if you’ve never filed taxes to start filing without incurring any fines or penalties.

ahto,

Since OP was never an American resident or paid taxes, he or she shouldn’t need to file taxes or be flagged on a system for anything anyway.

Unfortunately the US is one of two countries that requires all citizens, regardless of past or present residence or employment, to pay federal taxes.

Muted ads playing sound

Not sure if this is a (very annoying) feature or a bug that popped up recently, but when scrolling posts and encountering an ad, it will start playing with sound even though it shows the muted icon, unmuting and muting again has no effect. Sometimes this also happens when there’s no ad in sight, like while reading or replying...

ahto,

Sync for Lemmy has ads in the free version/without the in app purchase.

ahto,

Ja, war in einer englischen Gemeinschaft.

It is a huge failure in communication to pretend that distro upgrades are entirely different versions of the operating system. It does nothing but make Linux seem more complex than it actually is.

The jump in distro versions, say, from Fedora 38 to Fedora 39, is not the same as the jump from Windows 10 to Windows 11. It’s more like the jump from version 23H2 to 24H2....

ahto,

I don’t know, Apple releases a “new” version of macOS with big fanfare every year, and I’ve never heard anyone complain about it as if it were a huge breaking change.

ahto,

I switched to a TKL (tenkeyless) to reduce the distance between my hands when my right hand is on the mouse, and it feels so much better.

I got a programmable keyboard, so I remapped the keys around where my right hand rests to be the numpad keys when I hold the capslock key. That way I can still have the convenience of the numpad without having an actual dedicated numpad, although I’m still getting used to using it this way.

ahto,

I’ve been doing that for ~15 years and almost no one has commented on it :<

How to fool a laptop into thinking a monitor is connected?

Hello! I converted an old laptop with a broken screen into a home server, and it all works well except for one thing: when I reboot it (via ssh), if no screen is connected, it will get stuck and refuse to boot. as soon as I connect an HDMI monitor, the fans will start spinning and it will start booting as usual. Then I can...

ahto,

Linux supports it, but (some?) motherboards won’t boot without a display connected. I had this issue recently when I converted my old PC to a NAS and I had to buy a dummy plug.

ahto,

Well, the definitions aren’t really all that helpful. 12pm is neither before nor after midday, while 12am is exactly 12 hours before and after midday.

ahto,

Except the most widespread definition is the other way around: 12am is midnight and 12pm is noon. As that source argues, 12:01 during the day is clearly after noon, so it must be pm.

In the end my point stands: You can argue both ways and it is confusing.

ahto,

You won’t be using a traditional RAID with TrueNAS Scale. You have a choice of Stripe, Mirror, RAIDZ1, RAIDZ2, RAIDZ3, dRAID1, dRAID2, dRAID3. The docs are very detailed, so you should read up on RAIDZ and the other types elsewhere, too.

That’s a very American point of view. I had multiple science classes (Physics, Biology, Chemistry) and a single Math and History class each. (I’m from Germany)

The different math classes that I know of from the US (Trig, Calculus, etc.) are all just taught in Math class according to the school year you’re in.

ahto,

What’s the Ibuprofen demographic? Is Ibuprofen no longer used in the US? It’s the go to painkiller here in Germany.

ahto,

Yeah that makes more sense, thanks!

I'm currently downloading a show that is on a service to which I subscribe

I have a Galaxy Tab S7 and for a trip to Spain I downloaded some stuff to watch on the flight. When I got on the plane none of the stuff downloaded on Disney+ would play. Maybe an issue with downloading to the SD card? I don’t know, but regardless Disney offers SD card as a download destination so they should make sure it is...

ahto,

Both Netflix and Disney+ now have “cheap” tiers with ads, at least here in Germany.

ahto,

There’s a standard that does this in form of a QR code: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EPC_QR_code

Are phone notification LEDs still a thing?

Looking at all the features that older phones uses to have compared to newer ones, I never hear anyone talk about the removal of the notification LED. I personally really liked that feature, being able to see if I got an email, a text or missed a call without turning on my phone was awesome. My Samsung note 8 had this feature,...

ahto,

There was a guy in the cinema recently who had this feature turned on. He didn’t even bother to turn on do not disturb after the first time and he just didn’t give a fuck that it was bothering everyone.

ahto,

It has also improved a lot in the last years. PHP5 and especially versions older than that weren’t very good and deserved a lot of the criticism. PHP7 and onward are much better languages and don’t deserve the hate.

ahto,

It says that 3 servings have 660 calories. So if you want to make an actual meal out of this, you need at least 3 servings. That makes it even less of a good deal.

ahto,

Youtube have been increasing their anti-adblock efforts dramatically in the last few weeks, changing the scripts multiple times a day. The ublock origin team is very quick in updating the filters though. They have a post on their subreddit with some details.
