While the rest of the world goes AI/ML, I'd really like to just focus on getting OS fundamentals right. There is so much low hanging fruit to fix in operating systems to be distracted by chasing phantoms.

alcinnz,
@alcinnz@floss.social avatar

@hergertme @dottorblaster I doubt it's really 98%, it only feels that way.

alcinnz,
@alcinnz@floss.social avatar

@hergertme And I'll focus on web fundamentals!

I do need some AI/ML for e.g. speech-to-text, but I'm certainly avoiding these LLMs! Instead I now need to learn how to avoid the resulting spam to keep the web useful...

Point to ponder... we quite rightly judge harshly anyone (individuals/institutions/gov'ts/corporations) who acts unjustly/cruelly to others, e.g. depriving them of life, safety, bodily autonomy, dignity or other human rights/freedoms, largely depending on the severity of those offences, even if only against a few people. 1/2

alcinnz,
@alcinnz@floss.social avatar

@lightweight I'm reminded of a 2009 film I watched the other day, Drag Me To Hell. About a loan officer whom a Hungarian gypsy cursed to be dragged to hell in 3 days for denying her a 3rd extension on her loan.

I'm glad I decided to checkout Sam Raimi's filmography!

alcinnz,
@alcinnz@floss.social avatar

@lightweight Part of the complexity here is how intermingled the harms are.

The more we can view the harms in isolation, the simpler the solution is, the easier it is to get people upset about it.

Then we get people fearing change when we attempt to rearchitect our social infrastructure to help address these more complex harms...

alcinnz,
@alcinnz@floss.social avatar

@lightweight Also I'm reminded of the thoughts I shared on push notifications this morning: You can use them to worsen phone addiction or to lesson it.

I do judge apps by the choice they make here!

thegibson, to random

An enterprising individual would take this strike moment to start a new streaming service that immediately agreed to the writer's demands.

alcinnz,
@alcinnz@floss.social avatar

@thegibson How about my satisfying my demands of being allowed to download videofiles & collect them too? While they're at it?

janriemer, to ai

You don't need to transform .then method chains to async/await syntax. 🙄

Most LSPs can do that with 100% correctness and not probabilistically like .

alcinnz,
@alcinnz@floss.social avatar

@janriemer I meant to be building upon what you said, for another language.

I can imagine Evolutionary Programming (a previous AI technique in the funding cycle caused by over-promises) could take a type signature & generate a solid guess at it's implementation.

alcinnz,
@alcinnz@floss.social avatar

@janriemer Similarly I reason that Haskell can get the same features using older-generation AI techniques...

alcinnz, to random
@alcinnz@floss.social avatar

Push notifications can be both helpful or harmful for addressing computer addiction.

They are helpful when you use them to assure people "You don't need to check our app yet". They are harmful when you use them to say "Pay attention to meeee!"

It's a difference in UX design. elementary OS excells here!

Guess which bucket Tech's advertising income lands them in?

I am keen to implement pull notifications (RSS/ATOM webfeeds) in Haphaestus. I don't trust webdevs with push!

alcinnz,
@alcinnz@floss.social avatar

@Alonealastalovedalongthe I think the underlying cause has ties to so much else that is wrong in our lives, but yes I do see that attitude stated still.

In an environmental group I'm part of I had to push back against the notion that the heavy phone use wears down the hardware. Electronic components don't wear down in that way!

alcinnz,
@alcinnz@floss.social avatar

In other words: The problem isn't "Kids these days addicted to their phones" it's the businessmen adding gambling mechanics between said kids & their freinds.

Change the way we fund tech (or reduce the funding needs) & we can avoid a lot of harmful busywork! But I think I'm preaching to the choir there.

@mcc Incidentally, here's a good article on the "boxing" of XMPP.

Me: Wow. A lot of these students are really experienced with AI/ML stuff, who will do all the boring infrastructure work in the future?

Also me, eventually: Ooooh.

alcinnz,

@pleia2 The boring infrastructure work is frequently forgotten in these hype cycles.

Despite that being where all the work is!

What do I see an audioshows like the ones I've been rambling about?

I see strong understandings of science & history, presumably these artists are using the Internet to their full advantage!

I see stronger anti-capitalist messaging wherever the topic comes up, more willing to say the system's bad as opposed to specific (fictional) individuals.

I often see diverse characters.

I see shows ending on their own terms.

I see artists intrinsically driven to create!

1/2

alcinnz,
@alcinnz@floss.social avatar

Also, amusingly I see lethal internships under Night Vale Public Radio or Magus Elgar.

More regarding the medium, audioshows often seem to want to distance themselves from audiobooks.

Diegetic narrators, which can be amusing!
Found-audio (to justify characters narrating themselves).
Ensambles (need those conversations!).

All are very common!

So the problem I see with the "FDA for AI" model of regulation is that it posits that AI needs to be regulated separately from other things.

I fully agree that so-called "AI" systems shouldn't be deployed without some kind of certification process first. But that process should depend on what the system is for.

I have no objection to supporting JPEG-XL in my Argonaut Stack. Though if you want this please see if you can interest Juicy Pixels: https://github.com/Twinside/Juicy.Pixels

It should be trivial for them to add an alternate image decoding codepath...

Though I doubt there's many webdevs who'd trade away JS (opensource-licensed or not) for JPEG-XL...
