Am I missing something, or is the (LP)CAMM2 memory standard kind of a mess? https://www.tomshardware.com/pc-components/motherboards/msi-delivers-first-motherboard-with-camm2-memory-z790-project-zero-brings-new-ram-standard-to-desktops

I have so many questions

  • What do you mean 'higher density', you can now only have a single stick per machine or am I seeing that wrong?
  • "DIMM is inefficient" okay so you squish more DRAM modules on a single PCB so now you have to throw out even more good DRAM modules when one of them dies? How is that efficient?..
  • it also looks significantly more fragile, like adding a CPU socket
  • why?! 😭

another schematic picture, showing the LPCAMM2 module for laptops instead, where the entire module is basically the size of the connector, so you only have the topside to actually add dimms

every time my pc comes out of sleep mode dozens of calculators are open. what is happening here?

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

@stefan could be hardware/driver/software bug causing the hotkey to be triggered when the system is starting up somehow. That or someone's successfully executing some proof of concept exploit code on your machine haha.

Anything weird in the Windows Event Viewer?
Also don't know if you have any keyboard software that allows you to 'remap' the calculator hotkey to something else, that may be worth a try to see if it causes different things to open, or perhaps with AutoHotkey, just to exclude it 🤔

How do normal people in their thirties meet? Other than “they have kids, so they don’t”?

As far as I can tell the only option is “move to a city”.

Like, seriously, there must be opportunities to just… talk to someone.

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

@FayeDrake depends on your definition of normal, literally; if normal is furries, hang out in places furries hang out. if normal is people who hang out in bars, you could try a bar I suppose, but yea it depends what you like. Hackerspaces can be fun places to just hang out and talk with people in too. Some museums and alike have similar clubs centered around a subject. Might be other kinds of events and places to explore in your area, can help panning a bit about with google maps to see options.

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

@FayeDrake also good to mention: digital places can still be real places with real people. I've also heard of a lot of people making new friends in VR and such, but it depends on whether you like VR. IRC can also be cozy, and discord and slack and what not else chat groups of your preferred platform.

edit: and while on the subject of IRC, you can probably find MUD (Multi User Dungeon) and MUCKs, which is like a chatroom but with more roleplay, definitely fun if you're into that sorta thing tbh

@LRRRonEarth I think it's fine really, you honestly say some kickass true things when you allow yourself to sometimes :) you don't always have to be in PR mode, sometimes it's okay if there are people that don't get it tbh

I guess I shouldn't be very surprised that editing a toot would cause a bunch of sidekiq requests but not the same amount as a full toot, yet I somehow felt just compelled enough to add this to this thread so here we are. makes me wonder how that works though 🤔 you'd think it'd cause similar requests and what not? maybe I should read the spec instead of spec-ulate but I am far too eepy for research tbh

has someone hacked the pixel audio emoji thing yet to turn it into a full soundboard so we can GET INTO DA CHOPPA and DO IT NAO and I'M DETECTIVE JOHN KIMBLE spam callers

for anyone confused about what "google pixel audio emoji" are; https://benjojo.co.uk/u/benjojo/h/k277wz61Zr9pcbcQX1

it's basically a little soundboard they put in the default dialer on Pixel phones. While I'm not the kind of person to get salty about things (there's enough salt on this planet tbh, people need to complain less and be less serious and make more playful fun of things instead IMHO, Satire > Salty Ire), I absolutely love thinking about the shitposting implications of this

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eLoVnZZWwEM amazing video showing off the things possible in Resonite, really loving the vibe of this.

Also worth mentioning that Resonite also works in Desktop mode, it's more immersive in VR of course, but you can totally play without a VR kit, not to mention it's entirely free.

@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

@mynotaurus if you ever need help, I'm happy to help figure it out, I helped fund the development since early on and would really love to see it grow.

... that said I do not have a VR headset myself and would probably have to ask around why it would act that weird 🤔 I never had issues with booting it, even on Linux through Proton .. though it does deserve to be said that, it has a Linux build on Steam, but last I checked you shouldn't use that one but the Proton version instead ('force compat')

With KDE Plasma 6.1, Nvidia users should have less problems with flickering and other weirdness on Wayland

anthropy, to random

normalize breaking things (habits/patterns, stacks/setups, creations, softwares, cabling, hardwares, infrastructure, etc) to make room for new better things

like for instance, just remove windows, don't dualboot, just go full linux and don't look back, you can do it, it'll feel weird for a little bit and then you fit right in.
Worst case you can set up a fresh Windows again, which is also good to do regardless of whether you want to stick with Linux in the end. Just make sure you backup files 😛

I am deeply unhappy and feel unsafe for thinking the way I think and being who I am. The furry fandom was supposed to be inclusive and welcoming.

People tell me "well my experience is different, I'm fine actually".

Yeah that's cool but my experience fucking sucks. I am not actively trying to be evil or anything. I do not deserve this crap. Everyone is worthy of love and respect.

Or at least leave me the fuck alone. I don't ask for anything unreasonable.

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

@AlgorithmWolf that's sad to hear.
idk, I think you should be who you feel you are, what you think is right to be, that shouldn't be upto anyone else to decide for you.
Being outspoken about stuff gets you haters sometimes, I noticed getting a lot of engagement on fedi, both positive and negative, the negative can be a bit much, some people are really fierce in that sense on some subjects (such as eg AI but also tech in general). I don't know if I'd specifically attribute that to the furries tho
