https://www.tax-the-rich.eu/
a EU citizen's initiative to tax the rich more so that we can take more action against global warming and social inequalities.

It currently has 100k+ total votes, but we need a lot more to make it work. France already has 130% of the needed votes (76k out of 55k), but e.g the netherlands only 2% (400 out of 20k).

I just voted as dutch citizen, but if you know anyone that would also be interested in this, please do refer them to the website!

For everyone in the EU currently being spammed with black friday sales:
Check if they hiked the price to fake the sale

If they did, they're violating an EU mandate that started this year, that the "before price" HAS to be the lowest of the last 30 days. Fines can go up into the millions, so you really don't want to mess this up :>

Feel free to send them a gentle reminder if they do. I have zero sympathy for the practice or the companies doing it. Stop leaning on psychological warfare for sales

Hoooly 🥞 I had not expected them to have this much success just grafting metal into bones. The bone actually grew around it, does not seem infected, and the bone mount is actually so strong the bionic hand can just be attached to it. Look at these x-rays, this is like right out of a movie, if we can replicate this to other people it's going to change prosthetics/augmentation forever.

I can't describe the amount of rage I have for people that willfully decide to use Discord as documentation host.

Let's list the problems:

  1. You need a discord account
  2. You depend on discord to stay up
  3. Discord's search function is the only thing known to man to be MORE useless than screaming into the void
  4. CHAT services are not DOCUMENTATION and NEVER WILL BE
  5. HOW DO YOU EVEN FIT A WIKI PAGE INTO A MESSAGE?
  6. WHAT VERSION DOES THIS MESSAGE EVEN RELATE TO??
  7. HOW DO YOU BACK IT UP 🤯

Professional companies with a lot at stake be like: "We are currently experiencing an issue" (cert/DNS expired) https://hachyderm.io/@thomasfuchs/112148837765000872

By the way, for anyone still on twitter: The new privacy policy allows Elon to train AI on anything you post there, including text AND pictures.

So if I were an artist I'd get the hell off there, because legally you don't have a leg to stand on.

Thread: A short list of long blog posts I've written about computer security and/or cryptography.

I've been told by a lot of people that these posts are extremely useful references and guidance, but I also frequently hear, "I didn't know you wrote about $TOPIC!"

I guess I'm not very good at self-promotion or marketing.

@soatok people that only judge books by their covers, are bound to be misled by fancy looking misinformation

Also honestly people copying other people without checking are no better than people copying things from LLMs without checking; If you trust a single information source verbatim and don't do any research of your own, something is bound to blow up in your face sooner or later

Good info and facts can come from almost anywhere; As does misinformation and trainwrecks worth ideas. Verify it

Is it weird to think that wind turbines are unironically cool and maybe even pretty?

They're an engineering work of art, the fact we can make small straight tubes stick 150M up into the sky and hold onto a multi-megawatt dynamo and propeller even in heavy storms, is super neat to me, and standing next to one and looking up inspires a strange awe; to think we can build something like that in a consistent and safe way is absurd, seeing those giant slabs of metal surf around at 100s of km/h is 🤯

Occasionally I see videos of people rapidly doing things, like doing work, sorting stuff, chopping/building/crafting things, using calculators/devices, and I realized one thing is absent there

Computers. Anything that runs a full operating system.

Why?

Because they SUCK, developers all massively assume that it's okay for an animation to take sometimes even SECONDS, that it's fine to not preload things because "humans aReN't fAsT eNoUgH", etc.

We need more programs that aren't SLOW as dogshit

that's insane, for reference current GPT4 has 16k tokens or 32k if you have access to their special API, this is an almost 10x increase

I cannot wait to see how it'll perform on longer pieces of code where it previously failed, 16k was enough to get work on something with 100-300 lines of code, it makes me wonder, does this mean we can now work on things with 1-2k lines of code?

I just had to upload this myself so I could pin it.

I think it's a really important message beyond just the fact that computers and networks are an amazing gift to society, I think it's equally or more important to note that conformity is a curse.

We should all be able to have our own opinions and ways to view the world, without being resented for it, without being cast out for it.

It's diversity and inclusion that make this world a greater place; not some narrative that disagreement is wrong

We've always had to have conformity with the current view, disagree with the church, and you were punished as a heretic, with the political system as a revolutionary, with the scientific establishment as a charlatan, with the educational system as a failure. If you didn't fit the mould, you were rejected. But, ironically, the latest product of that way of doing things, is a new instrument, a new system, that while it could make conformity more rigid, more totalitarian than ever before in history, it could also blow everything wide open. Because with it, we could operate on the basis that values and standards and ethics and facts and truth all depend on what your view of the world is and that there may be as many views of that as there are people. And with this capable of keeping a tally on those millions of opinions voiced electronically, we might be able to lift the limitations of conforming to any centralised representational form of government, originally invented because there was no way for everybody's voice to be heard. You might be able to give everybody unhindered, untested access to knowledge-- You might with that and much more break the mould that has held us back since the beginning, in a future world [..] [..]An open society, tolerant of every view[..] [...] Utopia? Why? If, as I've said all along, the universe is, at any time, what you say say it is, then say. James Burke, Day the Universe Changed (1985) Play Mute sound Hide video Expand video Full screen

while I think that there's definitely an overhyping of AI/ML things and an abuse of the word for marketing purposes, I do also think that it could

  1. allow us to improve in every possible way
  2. including doing things with LESS power
  3. including having better, more equitable algorithms
  4. including making programs better, fix bugs, make UX/UI better, etc

It's a tool. Tools can be used for good or bad. If you scream it's inherently bad, only the bad people will keep using it. It's in your hands

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

Also: Please for the love of everything nice stop pretending LLMs are the only "AI/ML" thing out there

If you want a great example, look at Deepmind's Graphcast, that has all the potential to improve weather prediction accuracy worldwide, while doing it at a fraction of the power and resource cost of current algorithms https://deepmind.google/discover/blog/graphcast-ai-model-for-faster-and-more-accurate-global-weather-forecasting/

Or AlphaFold, which is greatly reducing power needs and monopoly advantages of Big Pharma with their protein folding datacenters https://alphafold.ebi.ac.uk/
