i’m not a snob but there’s a difference between good slop, overrated slop and just plain bad slop

arcana,
@arcana@layer02.net avatar

@cell If it's slop, it's bad

arcana,
@arcana@layer02.net avatar

@rat @cell Maybe it's a different interpretation of the word: to me the word "slop" implies food that is bad for you in terms of health

arcana,
@arcana@layer02.net avatar

@Alex @rat @cell Huh, I thought it referred to fast food? Why would a homecooked meal be slop? This is the kind of homecooked meal I'll have and it seems odd to refer to it as slop

arcana,
@arcana@layer02.net avatar

@ai @Alex @rat @hidden @cell I thought homecooked meals were the opposite of made in bulk? Sure you'll get the raw ingredients which are processed in bulk generally but the meal itself isn't

arcana,
@arcana@layer02.net avatar

@ai @Alex @rat @hidden @cell Do people actually do that? May I am showing a great deal of naïveté here but I've never had a meal prepared like that. The meal will be prepared right before it's eaten and then any remaining portions will be fed to the local foxes and other critters. There are times when two days will be used for example certain parts of the Sunday Roast are cooked the preceding Saturday, but yeah, I've never had food that was cooked for an entire week.

Valve is a monopoly, sure, but litterally every other platform outside of like gog is actually awful

arcana,
@arcana@layer02.net avatar

@ezio it’s a market monopoly not a coercive monopoly, it pays to learn the difference

arcana,
@arcana@layer02.net avatar

@ezio well it’s not good to do that, they’re popular because the competition is bad

An antitrust there is regulation for regulation’s sake and will make things worse

Why punish them for being successful and making something people are happy with?

arcana,
@arcana@layer02.net avatar

@allison @ezio predatory and illegitimate happen because of the state

arcana,
@arcana@layer02.net avatar

@allison @ezio >Microsoft needed no help from the state

The state massively helped them by making deals en masse to purchase Windows software for government and schools and setting their formats as standards. Microsoft became a part monopoly by selling to the state which is a monopoly. Plus Apple exists, Linux exists. Microsoft is not an actual monopoly these days except it’s connection to the state. There’s plenty of other choice which people can choose but don’t because of the state monopoly feeding it to people in schools

arcana,
@arcana@layer02.net avatar

@allison @ezio Pretty sure they did what I said in the UK

arcana,
@arcana@layer02.net avatar

@allison @ezio The post war UK governments were incredibly bad and dumb

They destroyed the UK automotive industry, the train networks, etc. it only makes sense they’d destroy the computer industry too

With Microsoft again though, it was competed with and it’s how they lost a lot of the server market and lost out on the mobile market

arcana,
@arcana@layer02.net avatar

@allison @ezio Their competitors did well and so they won out

Luck isn’t really a thing. It’s a cop out explanation.

Microsoft could be outcompeted (though state purchase of the software is a big issue) quite easily if those making alternative systems had better marketing skills and designed good UX

In 2014 I got an entire free school (UK school independent of government policy) using fully FOSS IT systems through one successful pitch to the governors. I had a company that literally did this as a service. Microsoft is easy to compete if you talk to the customers rather than just sitting behind an application that looks like it was designed in 1987 and saying “haha this is so superior, kill yourselves normie scrubs”

arcana,
@arcana@layer02.net avatar

@allison @ezio System76? Entroware? Likely many others

Not to mention, the way to beat that stranglehold is to offer a viable alternative to those companies. Find a way to offer a better deal, find a way to increase their own market share, etc.

Say what you will about Microsoft but they were excellent negotiators but that power has weakened and waned a lot imo and they can be outcompeted

Also just going back a bit to the concept of Microsoft as a monopoly in general which is that most people don’t care. It works and it does what they want. Look at people on here like Vriska who actively chooses Windows up until recently when she switched due to not liking the choices

A lot of these monopoly talks act like people are just brainless idiots who need to be told what to do because they can’t make their own decisions. The others are out there, and while certainly competitors could afford to improve their UX and marketing skills, it’s down to the customers as well ultimately to choose what’s best for them and in a lot of ways Windows is fine for them. It does precisely what they need, doesn’t confuse them, and that’s that

arcana,
@arcana@layer02.net avatar

@allison @ezio >Threatening to withhold OEM licenses for a product that consumers look at and go "hey, this is the OS that runs all my preexisting software" is not that

Can you give me the example of this?

Also, Google is ripe for competition right now and I have some plans brewing to that regard actually. Both Google and Microsoft have grown very weak and sluggish imo.
