Pretty much. Welcome to the fucking future I guess. There’s no flying cars and green cities and happiness or bloody universal healthcare, instead we have corpos trying to turn us into their consumer slaves and governments turning authoritarian. Just do what you’re told and buy more. Don’t ask questions don’t think just browse TikTok, improve your social credit score, and imprint more ads into your psyche until WW3.
We’re walking into hell with our eyes wide open fuck me it hurts.
I have not found any news article on this on a whim. Because my friends and family, I need to use Facebook Messenger, and Messenger Lite was a OK client - lightweight, no unnecessary features, etc., compared to the regular Messenger app....
The comments are all shitting and memeing on this but it’s actually concerning because… money. This is going to make Xitter seem more attractive for people to join and harder for people to migrate off to open platforms like Mastodon, thus giving Muskrat and big tech more control.
Youtube has the monopoly they do because of their easy monetization and algorithm and we all know the kinds of things Google is doing these days to abuse that position (WEI, blocking ad blockers, forcing watch history). I’m worried, because of big tech’s power to negatively affect society, and for the people that will be drawn into this because they desire money and fame. It’s a negative feedback loop that’s becoming harder and harder to break.
They always knew. When the time comes they’ll force everything back with even more bloatware and even less freedom to choose because that’s the corpo way. This is just another long-term power grab.
It’s been non-stop advanced bullshit after bullshit coming out of basically all corpos for the past year, but things were always headed in this direction. Muskrat just helped speed things along. The silver lining in all of this is the Fediverse and other platforms are finally popping off. Hopefully that trend gains more momentum and big tech dies before we end up further into a future we don’t want to be in.
You can educate them if they ask but otherwise you can’t force them because most people are very resistant to this type of thing.
Your best option is to stop using FB messenger yourself and tell them they can reach you on Signal. If they’re really your friends, I’d like to imagine they’d follow you over. If your friend group switches, more people are sure to follow which will help speed along mass adoption and normalization via word of mouth to other friends and family.
I’m sure corpos would get absolutely horny to do this for every user, including Elon. If they don’t now it’s probably because they’d get too much backlash. Resist.
A lot of people don’t bother with changing defaults and corpos like Google, Microsoft, and the likes are well aware of this which is why Google pays Mozilla hundreds of millions of dollars per year to be the default search engine.
I understand the compromise at the surface level but the implications just result in Google gaining more power and data, making it harder for “alternatives” to replace it over time which puts us all in an a bad situation when they decide to pull shit like WEI.
And since you won’t be able to modify web pages, it will also mean the end of customization, either for looks (ie. DarkReader, Stylus), conveniance (ie. Tampermonkey) or accessibility....
Always have been, and they’re in it for the long game. They’ve already acquired a stupid amount of control on the web and web standards with everything from Chromium to Youtube, not to mention it doesn’t help that they basically control the world’s most popular mobile OS. Google wants it all if we let them.
When I look at Mastodon posts, I see a decent amount of replies and boosts for popular posts, but not very many stars (see example image). I assumed a star is the same as a like, but I feel not a lot of people star a post, whereas I did see a lot of hearts/likes on Twitter posts. Are they not equivalent?
On Masotdon, likes don’t do anything to extend the reach of a post or make it popular in an algorithm like Twitter. It’s literally just a regular like/favorite button, so use it if you want to like/favorite a post.
Personally, I want nothing to do with them and I'm not willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. I moved to the Fediverse to get away from all these corpos.
Reddit showed their hand and I'm just done with all these corpos. Reddit is my last hold out and I'm slowly leaving that too. I'm moving to the decentralized FOSS future that I believe in where we the people have the power.
I've long since deleted my other accounts but can't sign in to my main and oldest one because it can't "verify" me so I'm basically locked out even though I still have access to gmail via IMAP....

Hi friends,...
Why do Mastodon posts don't get many likes? (feddit.nl)
