For the Love of Everything, Please Keep 3-6 Months Worth of Money for an Emergency Fund (If You Can)

I left my job about two months ago, and I applied for unemployment immediately. I got a new job today, but I STILL haven’t gotten my unemployment decision. Additionally, my food stamp application was delayed due to personal circumstances. In short, had I not had money saved for an emergency, I would have been mega-screwed....

Politicians: “Look how great the economy is doing!”
Job market: doesn’t exist
Housing: doesn’t exist
Homeless people: everywhere

Why there aren’t massive riots, I can’t fathom. Civilization is coming apart at the seams and everyone is just…okay with that.

argv_minus_one,

Buddy, in this economy, most people’s only feasible financial-emergency strategy is to jump off a bridge.

argv_minus_one,

Protests don’t work.

Yeah, that’s why I didn’t say “protests”. Our forefathers didn’t get a 40-hour work week by asking politely.

argv_minus_one,

Even that doesn’t really explain it. The streets are crawling with people who were evicted from their homes because their jobs didn’t pay enough to cover rent. These people have nothing to lose, and yet they still stay quiet.

argv_minus_one,

Linux. I signed up with my first proper ISP as a kid in the '90s. The service included a shell account on their Linux server accessible by telnet. I thought it was really cool and decided to see if I could run it on my own computer, and to my delight, I could.

argv_minus_one,

KDE has neat stuff, but Compiz was the king of bling.

argv_minus_one,

Note that for vector graphics editing, Inkscape is really good. That doesn’t help you if you need to edit photos, though.

argv_minus_one,

It would also be unplayably slow. Bethesda games aren’t known for performance even without Denuvo slowing them down.

argv_minus_one,

Unless I’m mistaken, Denuvo constantly encrypts and decrypts everything in the process’ memory, including executable code, in order to conceal it. There is no way to do that without massive performance overhead.

argv_minus_one,

As is Bethesda tradition.

argv_minus_one,

We’re going to need to coin a new term, along the lines of “Scunthorpe problem”, for the clusterf*** of mistakes this thing is going to make.

Such an on-device feature would either be trivial to break (if it’s an ordinary API) or be impossible to implement in an open-source browser and OS (if it’s some locked-down DRM-like thing), and the latter is not privacy-preserving because proprietary software tends to be spyware.

If these moralizers would just shut up, go away, and stop trying to ruin the Internet, that’d be great.

argv_minus_one,

This group has been demanding the censorship of porn, consequences be damned, for decades now. They have failed thus far, and the sky has not fallen as a result, so it’s pretty clear that it’s safe for society and the courts to continue to dismiss their irrational hysteria.

argv_minus_one,

Dynamic typing is insane. You have to keep track of the type of absolutely everything, in your head. It’s like the assembly of type systems, except it makes your program slower instead of faster.

argv_minus_one,

It costs four hundred thousand Red Bulls to crack this video game in twelve seconds.

I feel like Bethesda wouldn’t use Denuvo at all, because it would break a lot of mods, and Bethesda games rely heavily on mods to be fun.

ETA: Also, Bethesda games tend to be appallingly slow even without Denuvo, let alone with it.

argv_minus_one,

The ones that haven’t suddenly decided that Russia is our best friend all of a sudden for some reason that I still can’t figure out.

The reason is money. Either they got paid by Putin or they’ve been brainwashed by someone who got paid by Putin.

Scientologists Ask Federal Government to Restrict Right to Repair (www.404media.co)

The organization that represents Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard’s works has petitioned the U.S. government to restrict the right to repair a religious artifact called an E-Meter. This device is core to Scientology practices but the group argues exemptions allowing device hacking should not apply to equipment restricted to...

“If you open this device, the contained alien immediately escapes, rendering it inert.” There. Problem solved. Case dismissed.

What I want is better rasterization performance per dollar.

“Ray tracing” is a silly gimmick that contributes almost nothing and halves your frame rate. DLSS/FSR is upscaling, and upscaling is for consoles. To hell with them both.

I say “ray tracing” in scare quotes because what AMD and NVIDIA call “ray tracing” is nothing like the full-scene path tracing used in CGI movies. That is absolutely awesome, but it’s far too slow to do in real time.

Also, I’ve heard a lot of complaints from CUDA programmers that AMD GPUs are pretty much useless for anything other than graphics, and NVIDIA is basically the only GPGPU game in town. I don’t know the details, but AMD should probably work on whatever the problem is, if it still is a problem.

argv_minus_one,

Why not use a full-size computer for all that stuff?

argv_minus_one,

I take it you don’t already have a desktop you can use?

argv_minus_one,

I loved Fallout 4…once there were enough mods to fix everything that’s wrong with the vanilla game.

Which is par for the course with Bethesda. 🤷‍♂️

argv_minus_one,

Sadly, mods can and do remove the horrid dialog wheel thing, but they can’t add more interesting dialog options.
