arthur,

There’s a book for you to read: The Better Angels of Our Nature: Why Violence Has Declined (Steven Pinker)

arthur, (edited )

For some cases, like photography, pets and landscapes communities, where I probably will not comment, I decided to follow them on Mastodon instead of Lemmy. This way I can keep my Lemmy timeline cleaner.

arthur,

That will become necessary soon, since their “business model” lost it’s meaning after the LLM’s

arthur, (edited )

And the scrapping stage already happened. A new one will be useful only after enough human-made content is added, or it a major change in tech happen.

arthur,

Not a final say, but it have some influence on the public discussion.

What is capitalism?

Capitalism is the way we currently organize our society, where a group of people (the ruling class) have ownership over the means of production and, using that, they take the labor value created by the working class. They use their power to control the society, despite democracy, and change its rules to their advantage.

How capitalism strips people of their control over what they produce?

Think about… A factory worker making smartphones. How many they do in a day? How much it does each will cost? How much of it the worker gets? The shareholders that owns the factory will get most of the value as profit, despite the fact that they did not work.

1: No. You made something of value. Capitalists don’t create value.

2: Private property is not the same as Ownership of the means of production. Communism don’t abolish private property, it abolish ownership of the means of production.

3: You can expand your production by working with other people, as expected. In a communist society you would not be their “boss”, and would not get any value from their work for yourself, they will have it.

4: Communism is a way to organize society without exploitation. They may be true for a cooperative, and we need more of that. But the implications of that for the whole society are deeper; democracy may reflect the needs of people better when there are no power disparity between member of the society.

arthur,

Just on the bonus questions. Lol.

Money is not a problem. Money is just a tool to exchange value. Any socialist experience that I know use(d) currency. The difference is that not everything was up for sale.

Google is working on essentially putting DRM on the web (github.com)

The much maligned “Trusted Computing” idea requires that the party you are supposed to trust deserves to be trusted, and Google is DEFINITELY NOT worthy of being trusted, this is a naked power grab to destroy the open web for Google’s ad profits no matter the consequences, this would put heavy surveillance in Google’s...

And the attester will know where you’re navigating, always.

arthur,

Dude, in this case what make it hard is not nature, is not our technology or even the will of most people.

We have means to feed everyone on this planet. Make clean water available to everyone. To make everyone have a house. And to revert clima change.

What is stopping that to happen? Most people here will answer “capitalism”, but explain and prove that is not so simple because, as you said, the world is complex and we live inside the system. Think about how someone on ancient times trying understand a critique about their own society made by an outsider. Not that easy. And to make that even harder, we feed get propaganda from all sides.

I suggest you to make more basic/small questions. Like “why food companies don’t donate excess food for people in need instead of trashing it?”, the answer will be an excuse about risk of being sued. That’s not true, the are laws in US to protect companies donating food in good faith.

Or maybe “Are there options to capitalism? What is socialism? What is communism? Why do they failed? Did they failed? What can we learn with history? Where can I find good sources?”

arthur,

Also, VPN usually have a killswitch feature where it turn off the connection if the VPN stops working.

With the way the world's going, is there even a point to anything anymore?

Climate is fucked, animals continue to go extinct even more, our money will be worth nothing the coming years… What motivation do I even have to care to keep going? The world is ran and basically owned by corrupt rich people, there’s poverty, war, etc. It makes me sick to my stomach the way to world is. So I ask, why bother...

arthur,

Who benefits from your lack of hope/care/will/action?

Don’t get me wrong, there are a lot of problems around, and the power structures in this planet are in favor only of the ultrarich. The way you feel is not completely misplaced. But it’s also convenient for whom wants to keep those power structures as is.

There are things in life to make it worth to live, your relations to your family and friends, and the things you do that makes you happy. Give priority to that.

And about the problems around, they may seem impossible to beat, but they are not. People built this system, people can change it, or take it down. Try to find nonprofit organizations that cares about the same things you do, and get involved. There are political parties that do not runs for office, these organizations can be useful to widen your understanding about how society works, and what we can do now and in the future.

arthur,

Do you remember the Fibonacci sequence? You can use it to convert miles to kilometers .

2 mi ~= 3km

5mi ~= 8km

8mi ~= 13km

13mi ~= 21km

And so on.

arthur,

Just a neat coincidence

arthur, (edited )

But they (GNU) used the original Unix code to rewrite it or they did a clean implementation just cloning the behavior?

Edit: Cloning*

arthur,

Do a fresh isn’t all of the OS. If you use windows, run Chris Titus’ debloater. Personally I would choose W10 instead of W11.

arthur,

Yeah, how many people in North America, Europe or any major city actually hunted in their life? And about those who did, they made it bare hands? They, at least, build the weapons themselves?

This meme is trash, and I’m not even vegetarian.

This problem is a property of the way elections are done. Take a look: youtu.be/s7tWHJfhiyo

There are alternative voting methods that can solve this. Ranked Pairs and Schulze are my favorites, but Instant Runoff would solve this problem as well.

Edit: format

arthur,

In Brazil we use a 2-round system where, if no one gets the majority, the 2 most voted will run the second turn. And it leads to the same problem.

arthur,

I remember nauseousness induced by sleep deprivation in the first nights. I left after a year, that was late 2000s.

arthur,

Corporate interest IMO favors and spreads the far-right content. The only “big” far-right player I know on this space is Trump’s truth-social (that used Mastodon code to have a fast Twitter clone, and they defederated themselves).

That will be interesting to watch: how much the far-right will appeal and spread in this more-leveled plainfield, without Big Tech help.
