Oh also, ABC Radio Sydney (702) news this morning lead with some welfare related story that leaned heavily on the Salvation Army (known anti-LGBTIQ+ org) spokesmouth person sound bites and then went to a story about issues facing retail workers based on a report by the SDA (fuck those guys, they arent friends of workers).

Mr 12yo is excited to experience his first Yum Cha tonight. When I explained to him how Yum Cha works, his first question was "Does that mean you dont need to wait for your food to be cooked?”. When I confirmed this his next question was "Why arent all restaurants just Yum Cha?”. 🤣

I think my preferred sparky is trying to break up with me. 😩

ausfestivus,
@ausfestivus@aus.social avatar

This looks to have happened. Current sparky hasnt responded to my request. Have waited 3 weeks. Now trying to hunt down someone new. Feels sad, the sparky I had used for a few years was a good guy.

Usual sparky turned up today \o/

He spent his hour here telling me what a PITA the job he is working on is. He seemed to have lost weight as well. He said he has been up and down his ladder 100 times a day.

    @kcarruthers it’s fixed when it’s fibre 😜

    For now, let’s settle for working.

    Did the tech tell you anything about the fault? What about neighbours?

    @kcarruthers how’s the FttN going in the rain? Just asking because drops during rain events can be powerful info to document to accelerate replacement. If you’re getting drops in the rain, note them in your log and grab a screen cap of the BOM radar at or near the time of the drop.

    Does anyone here know of a good write up (technical and non-technical) about why service providers only advertise their 1gbps products as “up to”?

    Providers pulled this shit well before NBNCo was a thing and the ACCC smacked them down hard.

    Im not looking to get all worked up about this, im just curious what the underlying reason for the qualification is.

    ausfestivus,
    @ausfestivus@aus.social avatar

    @MattHatton Yea, now I recall seeing that wording. My question stands though, WHY are the providers unable to hit the max speed? Where is the constraint? Is it a provider thing? Is it an NBNCo thing? Im trying to understand why this stupidity exists.

    @decryption how is it that you live in Australian suburbia and haven’t ever seen one before? I thought they were still fairly common. Not as much as they used to be but still….

    Spent more time in the roof space today. Two of the hardest drops are now done and ready for punch down. Have also finished hacking holes in the walls and installing the face plates in all the places. Hopefully do the last two drops tomorrow and then I’m just about done in the ceiling.

    ausfestivus,
    @ausfestivus@aus.social avatar

    Did the last two drops this morning. Ugh, one was a pig to get to because aircon ducting.

    Then had pull all the cables in the roof space tight and tie them onto the catenary properly. Following that it was time to pull all the runs down the wall into the garage roof. Ohhh boy, spaghetti junction. Managed to sort it out though. Who knew that learning to untangle firefighting hose would help with untangling Ethernet cable?

    Next up, finish the runs in the garage roof and then I am done with ceiling crawling. \o/ Cooler weather tomorrow as well I think, will see how I go getting it done.

    ausfestivus,
    @ausfestivus@aus.social avatar

    I havent worked on the home Ethernet project for the past week due to illness. Which is a shame because the weather was cold and miserable. Perfect for hanging out in a roof space.

    None-the-less I have spent some more time in the garage roof today completing the pull throughs of the Ethernet cables from the upstairs rooms. All of the cable is now ready to be dropped down the side of the comms cabinet in the garage.

    Because the comms cabinet was subject to a late relocation from its planned location to a new one, I also took the opportunity today to pull out and re-run the catenary to the new roof location.

    Im hopeful that the overage I allowed on my cable runs is enough to cover the extra distance needed to get to the comms cabinet's new location.

    ausfestivus,
    @ausfestivus@aus.social avatar

    Silly me forgot I still had two more upstairs runs to do. Thankfully neither required me to go into the main roof again. They have now both been completed. Now all 7 runs are complete. The cables are all pulled through and resting in a neat coil on top of the comms cabinet.

    Sparky has said he will drop in this week or next (he didnt break up with me, he just has a large job that is running very late due to illness and other factors and im reasonable with him because he is nice, does great work and charges a reasonable price), once sparky work is done I can proceed with comms cabinet layout and rough-in.

    Next up will be the punch downs on all the wall sockets and then testing them end-to-end. Hopefully none of the runs were damaged during their install.

    ausfestivus,
    @ausfestivus@aus.social avatar

    Ooops, forgot to move one of the runs yesterday following the relocation of the comms cabinet. Fixed it up this morning. Yes, was back in the garage ceiling. Only for about 20mins though.

    Is there a Law that describes the likelihood that any length or size of cable will tend towards tangle?

    ausfestivus,
    @ausfestivus@aus.social avatar

    My box conduit arrived today. 50mmX50mm. Will be used to duct the Ethernet cables from the ceiling space down to the comms rack on the wall.

    Anyone know a good way to attach plastic box ducting to bricks? Im thinking some raw plugs in the cement between the bricks and then some sort of fastener that screws the ducting into the raw plug on the wall.

    ausfestivus,
    @ausfestivus@aus.social avatar

    @jpm @static yea about that, ive previously discovered that my bricks are some sort of diamond composite. Drilling holes into them is really very difficult. Like, REALLY difficult. Maybe I could go into the mortar with something like one of those fancy Ramset bolts.

    ausfestivus,
    @ausfestivus@aus.social avatar

    @jpm @static I have a hammer drill. A bigger one would be better though. Something like the one they used to drill the vault in Die Hard.

    Home internet has a fault. It started at 12:16 today. NBN’s FttC NCD is showing that it is losing DSL sync to the DPU on the power pole in the street. Loss of sync occurs randomly. It has periods of stability (have seen up to 45 mins). During periods of instability it will flap every few minutes.

    Want to see the latency difference between FttC and FttP?
    Can you tell when I plugged the UDM into the NTD?
