I turn tea in to systems. Infinitely curious. Asks "how hard could it be?" as an excuse to try, never to denigrate. My sensor of humour increases the fire danger rating wherever I go. See also https://mastodon.hams.social/@vk3xe where I get excited about Amateur Radio & Electronics some more

Anyone got any clues on a "smart" (i.e: Zigbee/Ethernet/something that works with Home Assistant) zone controller I can use to replace my current one?

@decryption I’m not sure you want a project but shouldn’t be that hard with a esp32-c6 and esphome

    Love* how Facebook just sends out random notifications to read Pauline Hanson’s nonsense. Good and normal.

    So far my favorite mindfuck with French railway signaling: one of the common signals is called a "square". This, of course, is because the signal in question never has a square shape.

    (it used to, in the days of mechanical signals, but in modern times it's an oblong set of traffic lights)

    aussiegeek,
    @aussiegeek@aus.social avatar

    @danderson is this the same as a home vs auto signal?

    I like how I specifically said in the video that the current charging infrastructure landscape is weird and that we shouldn't look to it as setting a norm, and yet I am still getting bombarded by Tesla apologists who think all automakers need to put the charge port where Tesla does to be compatible with their weird chargers with dinky cables.

    aussiegeek,
    @aussiegeek@aus.social avatar

    @TechConnectify you’re not wrong. I drive an ev with the charge port on the drivers side… it was annoying using an on street charger

    Whee, taking my Advanced amateur radio exam tonight. Fingers crossed, soon all the transmit power and extra stupid DIY projects will be mine, all miiiine!

    aussiegeek,
    @aussiegeek@aus.social avatar

    @danderson even worse if used it a few times since learning it. When I did my US extra they were surprised I knew it. Congrats on passing btw!

    Questions on the amateur radio advanced exam are... interesting, because they're all based on radio state of the art from like 1980. So, you have to know how terrible-ass power supply circuits operate to a fairly fine level of detail, even though the reality is you'd be an idiot to not just plop a linear or switchmode regulator IC into whatever it is you're doing.

    aussiegeek,
    @aussiegeek@aus.social avatar

    @danderson my favourite was having to learn in detail about how tubes work
