Guys, some hardware #HelpWanted (or rather, advice). My #motherboard burst into smoke 🔥 and now it's okay 😮
🧱 So, I had this problem where my laptop went completely unresponsive: no charging, no powering on, no indicator lights, nothing
🔌 Tried a new power adapter + opened up and line-tested the power socket but no response
🔥 Decided to connect up and try once more. Battery + other indicators finally came on...and also a mini explosion with smoke! So I quickly disconnected
#OCaml peeps, how would #Irmin work as the backend for an #ActivityPub powered social network? :fedi: 🐫
Looking at the descriptions, it seems it'd be either the worst or the perfect fit, but I can't figure out which 😅
The plus point is ActivityPub is all about distributed databases and edit history and posts that shouldn't be duplicated. But social media is also about privacy rights, including the right to be forgotten—so is that something the history-preserving Irmin can easily handle? 📜
Just learnt that #MonoclesChat (apparently) supports running #WebXDC apps over #XMPP, but I'm not able to figure out how it works. Anyone used it? :xmpp:
It would be more accurate in some ways than a generic handwriting recognition tool, because it can use syntax rules as hints for what you actually want to write, as well as apply them to auto-indent to the number of spaces you intended (with manual override options of course)
Any plans to add !bangs in @Mojeek? Bangs was the main reason #DuckDuckGo was my default search engine for so long.
I've kept #Mojeek there for a few weeks, but I keep switching to DDG just for the bangs 😕
I suppose a better solution would be to include bang-like functionality directly in #Firefox because why hit an external website, but not sure if any plugins make it at seamless? 🧩
How do #NFC enabled devices like the newer #Yubikey devices work? ⚡
Do they have some kind of magic chip that gets powered over NFC and performs #encryption stuff, or is it more of a standard read/write tag with the computer/phone/reader device doing most of the work? 💳
(If the latter then is there a danger of other people bringing a scanner nearby and swiping your key?) 🔑
Right now my "default" is to go to GitHub, and then maybe GitLab and Codeberg...but that leaves out all the other hosts out there. Once #ForgeFed happens we'll need it even more :fedi:
(By the way, I say "git" because that's where most code is, but if other kinds of repos are supported, even better! 🔍 )
There should be a more search-friendly version of man; maybe we can call it hobbit. I don't mean just searching through a #manpage, but having cookbook-styles questions like "How do I do X with Y command?" ❓
Each hobbitentry would be independently searchable within a hobbitpage, so that I can search for git rename branch or something and it'd give me the result even if it's not an exact string match 🔎
Result: less time on search engines and more time in the command-line! :terminal:
Different watch companies would have different proprietary ways of measuring time, and you wouldn't be able to properly schedule meetings unless you had the same brand of watch that the other people in the meeting were using ⌛
And then people would have to make "watch bridges" that converted between two different ways of measuring time, except that to avoid patent violations they'd by necessity be ever so slightly offset and inaccurate ⏱️
If it's anything like it used to be, it's better than Squarespace and its ilk because you can directly upload your pure, hand-coded HTML instead of going through all those autogenerative contraptions they have nowadays 🧶
#App developers, is there an easy way to securely share sensitive data (eg. login credentials) locally between two #apps on the same device? And if not, what about non-sensitive data (like how the #SimpleApps or whatever they're called now share themes)? 🔏
Basically it's a family of apps with a common login and we're trying to avoid the user having to log in separately on each one. We're using #Capacitor, if that matters ⚙️
