beirdobaggins,

No, that’s a cappella.

They are talking about the lady who wants to make a coat out of dalmatian puppies.

beirdobaggins,

I have been using this pair since 2020, I lost them for a couple of months and picked up a pair of Tozo t8s. I didn’t like them as much and the case was too big.

When I found them again, I gave the t8s to my son.

BTW, They still sell the t6s on Amazon.

beirdobaggins,

In my previous role I was in IT for a small organization. We issued cell phones to all employees.

I had one of those paperclip containers with the magnetic rim on my desk full of sim card removal tools.

beirdobaggins,

The drive is LUKS encrypted. It is an option when formatting the drive using Gnome Disks in Linux.

Whenever you plug it in, it asks for the password.

On the drive I have a bash script that syncs my home directory to a folder on the drive using rsync.

I don’t create new files personal files very often and they are backed up in other ways too (to a NAS and also encrypted and uploaded to cloud storage) so I tend to only run the sync script about every other week or so.

I have a separate script and folder to backup my work laptop as well. for the work laptop I back my home directory and the /etc directory, because I have some customized configurations in etc. I run this every week.

Because the drives are USB C I can plug them into my phone for transferring files. The encrypted drive can be mounted using an app called ZUGate.

beirdobaggins,

Yeah, a lot of people leave their phone out of the EDC because they use it to take the picture.

The case is a good stand-in.

beirdobaggins,

You and my dad would argue over who’s tools those are.

He did the same thing with the color orange.

beirdobaggins,

I don’t think you are being fair. There are a ton of issues that people experience with Windows but everyone just accepts it because Windows is seen as “Normal”.

Any issue you experience in Linux is magnified by it being a different issue than the ones you are used to in Windows and your unfamiliarity with Linux.

One of the cool things about Linux is you actually have a hope of being able to fix issues yourself without waiting for a company to solve your problems.

I don’t try to run Windows applications on Linux, but I imagine that could be frustrating. But that is a bit like being angry at your dog for not being a cat. You can buy your dog a cat costume but it’s still just a good boy trying his best to do what you want.

beirdobaggins,

How did that exchange go?

They try to tell you that you can’t use your last name?

How do y'all deal with programs not supported on Linux?

I’ve been seeing all these posts about Linux lately, and looking at them, I can honestly see the appeal. I’d love having so much autonomy over the OS I use, and customize it however I like, even having so many options to choose from when it comes to distros. The only thing holding me back, however, is incompatibility issues....

beirdobaggins,

I’m a Linux admin at work and I use Linux for my main system.

I do need to administer some Windows only things too. I got them to give me an older desktop system running windows that I leave running in my cube.

Anytime I need to do Windows stuff I remote into that machine.

Pixel 6a Recommended actions rapidly appearing and disappearing while viewing google accounts that are signed in on the phone (youtu.be)

Don’t really know how to explain what’s going on so I took a video. When I’m in a Google app, and I click on my profile picture in the top left to switch between Google accounts, I see this recommended actions notification basically flashing. I’m not hitting any buttons or touching the screen. It makes it really...

beirdobaggins,

Mine is doing that too in the messages app.

And I don’t have multiple google accounts signed in.

beirdobaggins,

I dont use a pixel anymore. For me its happening on my Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra.

beirdobaggins,

Ubuntu is great. I used it for years.

This is going to sound petty, but one thing that annoyed me for years was the ads for their enterprise crap that they put into the terminal whn running updates.

I tried Debian 12 when it came out and I love it. I switched all of my systems to Debian.

I would much rather use a community driven distro than a corporate one.

Also, I applied for a job with Ubuntu The recruiter sent me the most insane take home written interview packet. I took a look at it and decided I didnt want to work with a bunch of people who would fill that packet out.

beirdobaggins,

I didn’t realize that it didn’t support it until after purchase. And I still want the domain name.

beirdobaggins,

I think I was spoiled from google domains always including it by default. Using a new registrar now and I just assumed.

It’s not worth the cost of a P.O. box. Gonna drop the domain.

beirdobaggins,

It sounds like you got it working-ish.

One thing you might be running into is having hiberboot (AKA fast startup)enabled in windows. Instead of shutting down it hibernates when you choose “shutdown”.

If it is in the hibernated state instead of actually shutdown. You won’t be able to choose a different boot option.

Here is some info on how to turn it off. elevenforum.com/…/turn-on-or-off-fast-startup-in-…

The future of selfhosted services is going to be... Android?

Wait, what?

Think about it. At some point everyone has had an old phone lying around. They are designed to be constantly connected, constantly on... and even have a battery and potentially still a SIM card to survive power outages.

We just need to make it easy to create APK packaged servers that can avoid battery-optimization kills and automatically configure an outbound tunnel like ngrok, zerotrust, etc...

The goal: hosting services like #nextcloud, #syncthing, #mastodon!? should be as easy as installing an APK and leaving an old phone connected to a spare charger / outlet.

It would be tempting to have an optimized ROM, but if self-hosting is meant to become more commonplace, installing an APK should be all that's needed. #Android can do SSH, VPN and other tunnels without the need for root, so there should be no problem in using tunnels to publicly expose a phone/server in a secure manner.

In regards to the suitability of home-grade broadband, I believe that it should not be a huge problem at least in Europe where home connections are most often unmetered: "At the end of June 2021, 70.2% of EU homes were passed by either FTTP or cable DOCSIS
3.1 networks, i.e. those technologies currently capable of supporting gigabit speeds."

PS. syncthing actually already has an APK and is easy to use. Although I had to sort out some battery optimization stuff, it's a good example of what should become much more commonplace.

beirdobaggins,

Most people get a new phone every 2-3 years. If people use their 2 most recent phones as simple servers, then these are not 10 year old devices.

beirdobaggins,

Just for shiggles, I setup and ran a minecraft Java server on an old phone for a little while. I did this through Termux.

It was surprisingly good.

beirdobaggins,

I have some strange power issues with my laptop that may have a similar cause.

I put an additional drive in my work laptop so I could debian for work without nuking the system drive.

Shutting down usually always works properly but rebooting gets stuck sometimes. It’s like it gets to the bottom of the reboot cycle and loses the ability to say “okay boot back up now”. On my laptop, it’s obvious that it is still on because of the light on the power button. I hold it down for about 12 seconds until it goes off and then I can power it back on.

I wonder if your surface is doing a similar thing where it is still powered on but not booted. You might try hiding the power button down for about 15 seconds and then hitting it again when it’s in this state.
