As a long time Reddit user, there's something about Lemmy and the fediverse that feels really refreshing and new. I think it has to do with a few things......
Why shut it down? This isn’t Reddit… if someone else wants to mod it instead, they should. A major draw of a decentralized platform is that it gives users options.
Having an “official” community misses the point of decentralization entirely…
Screenshot included so you do not have to browse to it. Literally. I'm not even joking. The entire subreddit is 2 days old (founded immediately after the AMA) and populated+moderated exclusively by accounts less than 6 months old following standard generic name schemes and posting comments that reek of chatGPT generated...
I disagree with the feditips account. I think he's pushing people away from lemmy rather than the specific instance. I've had no issues on lemmy.ml and the mods here have been great. I'm pretty sure he's just referring to lemmygrad. And like the other user who replied to you said, you could always make a new instance or join another. The political opinions of the devs means nothing if the platform is decentralized. Unlike Reddit, they don't have power over the entire platform, just whatever instance they host, just like if I made an instance, which I can, I have complete power over it.
Well, everything else I said stands. You're on Beehaw, so none of that affects you. I could migrate my account there if it became an issue. Lemmy as an overall platform should still be recommended imo, because there are so many instances to join instead.
My experience with the Fediverse has only been through Mastodon, through which I struggled to find a community I really gelled with. Either it was supper overwhelming with meme posts or NSFW, or it was too chill to the point of nothing. Or, it was hyperfocused like FOSS/Linux and became uninteresting after awhile. May try again,...
I rent so I cannot set up a wired system. I need two of them and preferably they'd be okay in severe weather. Thunderstorms are common in spring / autumn as is severe weather including tornadoes. In fact my house nearly got hit by one two months ago. Fun times. Summers are hot and sometimes humid. Currently 90s. Triple digits...
I don't really like the argument "what isn't spying on us?". I'd rather avoid anything that spies on its users and doesn't respect privacy as much as possible. It's not completely unavoidable.
If you look up Graphene OS, it's possible to have smart phone and use smart features and Google apps without being spied on. The OS runs all those apps in a sandbox with no permissions. It's pretty cool, but only for Pixel phones and you need some technical know-how to flash the rom (if you understand how Lemmy works though you're probably pretty tech savvy already).
I bet being MKBHD would be the best job in the world. You get all this stuff for free and then make an insane amount of money talking about it on camera.
Lemmy does give me a strong nostalgic feeling of old school forums. I think the Fediverse is going to give enthusiasts what they've been missing. I just hope it lasts and continues to grow.
I've dabbled with Linux over the years, first with Ubuntu in the early 2010s, then Elementary OS when that dropped, and a few years ago I really enjoyed how customizable the gui was with Xubuntu. I was able to make it look just like WIndows 2000 which was really cool....
Using Zorin OS right now and it might be my favorite Linux distro ever. It's like a stock, good version of Windows 10 or 11 (it's obviously not Windows but that's just an easy comparison visually speaking). For the longest time I couldn't get myself to fully switch to Linux due to needing to use video editing software for my job, but installing DaVinci Resolve Studio on Zorin was a breeze, and they even have an easy to follow guide for doing so.
Yeah I installed Linux Mint Cinnamon today and for some reason I couldn't get working drivers for my wifi card installed, so I tried Zorin instead. I really love the look and feel, but I'm still having the no wifi issue. Weird. If I can't get it to work I may need to buy a new wireless adapter. Mine is the Asus PCE-AC68
Edit: Fixed it by cutting all power to the power supply, waiting a few minutes, pushing the power button while there was no power to fully drain any remaining power from the board, then I flipped the power supply back on, turned on the computer, booted straight to bios, then to Linux, now everything works great.
I'm genuinely so excited to see some of the more focussed communities blossom on this platform as they have on Reddit over the years. Which are your favourites and which do you think could succeed here?
Getting rid of old.reddit is just a guess of mine. They got rid of i.reddit recently which was the old mobile version, so it seems like a logical next move since a lot of the new reddit features don't work on old.reddit.
There's always a chance they keep old.reddit for a long time, but they have no profit incentive to do so
Yeah it exists, but it had only 10 members and one total post when I joined an hour ago. I just created a New York Giants community and I'm going to be posting to the NFL one throughout the season to help it grow!
An NBA community also exists at a similar size. I'll go ahead and create a Nets community for my team there.
Just joined, and well, I'm thinking ill stay. Ive been looking for a good reddit alternative for a while now. devs, you've done quite some good work here.
I always thought Jerry was underrated. He wasn’t great, but he was solid and never the problem with those terrible offensive lines near the end of Eli’s career
Why does Lemmy feel so fresh compared to Reddit?

Folks, looks like there were two communities created and that one is move active/more subscribers, so no point in having both....
