I don't understand the reddit users who are claiming they don't want to join Lemmy over political reasons. They could create their own instance with whatever rules they want and push whatever political agenda they want. The fact that the platform is decentralized means everyone can get with they want.
On desktop I am using Firefox since I can remember. The main reason being the good add-on support and the privacy friendly image of the browser. Although there might be better solution to keep my own data privat, Firefox always felt like the sweet spot between privacy and usability. Now I am using an iPhone and first thing I...
Excellent post, and I love your sites minimal, old school design. I finally found the right corner of the internet where people actually think about this kind of thing! It's so frustrating how over the years search engine results just give you bloated, pointless articles that exist only to rank high in SEO and get ad revenue.
I too have been using the site:reddit.com method, but it sucks to essentially only have one for-profit website as the one I use to research things.
Lemmy does give me a strong nostalgic feeling of old school forums. I think the Fediverse is going to give enthusiasts what they've been missing. I just hope it lasts and continues to grow.
Box score here. Who's going to win the series? Jokic had a huge game yet the Nuggets lost. Seems like Miami's defensive gameplan is to let Jokic score and lock everyone else up.
I want to see Reddit fail tbh. It was great at one point, but it won't be great again. It's time for the platform to shoot itself in the foot to allow better platforms such as Lemmy to grow.
I've dabbled with Linux over the years, first with Ubuntu in the early 2010s, then Elementary OS when that dropped, and a few years ago I really enjoyed how customizable the gui was with Xubuntu. I was able to make it look just like WIndows 2000 which was really cool....
Yeah I installed Linux Mint Cinnamon today and for some reason I couldn't get working drivers for my wifi card installed, so I tried Zorin instead. I really love the look and feel, but I'm still having the no wifi issue. Weird. If I can't get it to work I may need to buy a new wireless adapter. Mine is the Asus PCE-AC68
Edit: Fixed it by cutting all power to the power supply, waiting a few minutes, pushing the power button while there was no power to fully drain any remaining power from the board, then I flipped the power supply back on, turned on the computer, booted straight to bios, then to Linux, now everything works great.
Using Zorin OS right now and it might be my favorite Linux distro ever. It's like a stock, good version of Windows 10 or 11 (it's obviously not Windows but that's just an easy comparison visually speaking). For the longest time I couldn't get myself to fully switch to Linux due to needing to use video editing software for my job, but installing DaVinci Resolve Studio on Zorin was a breeze, and they even have an easy to follow guide for doing so.
We all know about how Reddit closed-sourced back in 2017 and will be killing off third-party apps this July, what will Lemmy.ml do to avoid facing the same fate? Reddit started off like this (open, aiming for freedom) and it all went downhill from there.
I don't think it's possible due to it being decentralized. If anything goes wrong start your own instance. That's what I think a lot of the new users don't realize. This isn't a reddit clone, it's something with much greater potential
Every time I look at reddit or twitter they're designed to be filled with the most vile or annoying posts imaginable to keep you scrolling and this place just... doesn't have that. It's relieving to not be inherently angry just scrolling through new posts
That's the beauty of a free, not for profit, decentralized system. The only goal for the developers is to make it a great user experience. It's not about getting clicks for ad revenue
I'm genuinely so excited to see some of the more focussed communities blossom on this platform as they have on Reddit over the years. Which are your favourites and which do you think could succeed here?
I expect a large influx of redditors over the next few months, especially when they kill off old.reddit and the 3rd party apps no longer work. So if you create (if it isn't already created) an NHL and Pokemon community here, I'm sure users will find them and they would become active eventually. We are decently early here in my opinion.
Getting rid of old.reddit is just a guess of mine. They got rid of i.reddit recently which was the old mobile version, so it seems like a logical next move since a lot of the new reddit features don't work on old.reddit.
There's always a chance they keep old.reddit for a long time, but they have no profit incentive to do so
Just joined, and well, I'm thinking ill stay. Ive been looking for a good reddit alternative for a while now. devs, you've done quite some good work here.
I think the very tiny barrier of entry to the fediverse helps keep it feeling mature. It's not flooded with teenagers who got their first phone like Reddit is
But what if the mods on a community go rogue? If the politics community in one instance goes to shit because of a corrupt mod, you can join one from another instance rather than have no option.
I think 50% of reddit comments are bots lol. It feels like a time loop sometimes seeing the same posts, memes, jokes, etc all the time. It doesn't feel very authentic
Bluesky is just a knock-off version of Mastodon that is for profit. It claims to be decentralized yet the only instance running on their AT Protocol is Bluesky. Plus I've heard they plan on having an algorithm based feed, which just sounds like exactly what I'm trying to avoid.
People who think Lemmy is too political and refuse to join is good.

Firefox in iOS, any important difference to Safari?

Which distro has the best GUI in your opinion?

what web browser do you use and why?
I use geh Firefox forks mull and fennec, I occasionally use vanadium. I just like privacy but tor is overkill for me
What could Lemmy.ml do to avoid becoming the next Reddit after a decade?
We all know about how Reddit closed-sourced back in 2017 and will be killing off third-party apps this July, what will Lemmy.ml do to avoid facing the same fate? Reddit started off like this (open, aiming for freedom) and it all went downhill from there.
One great thing I just realized, there isn't the need for constant rage bait posting
Every time I look at reddit or twitter they're designed to be filled with the most vile or annoying posts imaginable to keep you scrolling and this place just... doesn't have that. It's relieving to not be inherently angry just scrolling through new posts
Reminder to all: Be respectful when disagreeing.
Rule #2 is possibly our most important one:...
