I wound up adding adminer to the docker-compose file temporarily to help me look through the data. In my case, there were no legitimate users who hadn't verified their email, so I deleted all from local_users where the email verified column was false.

Yeah, I really just did a very basic setup:

adminer:`` image: adminer`` restart: always`` ports:`` - 8080:8080

When entering the database host, just enter "postgres" since that's the host name it will have in the virtual network.

Great!

For me, psql at the command line is great in a pinch but not great for any kind of complex task. I'll probably add adminer as a permanent option, but only served locally + add a VPN to the server, or figure out how to get my preferred DB tool (DataGrip) to connect via SSH.

There should be some management tools available via the GUI to lemmy admins, though. I'm so tempted to try to add it but I'm (generously) a rust novice.

I always hear MREs cause days-long constipation, but they probably aren't in the "easy to find" category.

Anyone else turned off by communities lacking a banner and/or icon?

Just a small pet peeve. I know wealth of quality discussions and content is the key to a healthy community, but I find lack of an icon or banner to be a turn-off signaling low effort, especially if the community has been around for more than a week or so. Meh. Just my 2 cents.

Would you prefer if they were given automatically generated icons as long as they were left blank? I think that would make them more easily recognizable individually and visually consistent alignment-wise.

Is there any federated community that supports polls? That's the feature I miss most from Reddit

Polls are a thing on mastodon, at least.

I noticed that a bot had started rapidly creating accounts on my instance. None of them used a real email address though, and email verification is required. I've since started requiring an application though, anyway.

I think I'll try to seed this community by at least posting the episodes. 300 is probably a reasonable place to start. Who knows?

Right, even if you don't use anything affected by the restrictions being put on the API, I just feel like Reddit will get noticeably worse from here on out. Huffman is basically promising that it will.

bilb,
@bilb@lem.monster avatar

I don't use kbin, but you can probably just block the account, can't you?

But unless something changes dramatically, it’ll suffer the same fate as Mastodon or Bluesky.

I have no idea what's going on with Bluesky, but mastodon is... fine? It's not twitter and never will be.

This doesn't mean Lemmy doesn't need a bit of work, though, I don't think anyone would deny that. I don't think they've had quite the pressure to triage issues like they do now, so a decent list of priorities is probably emerging.

I'm tempted to try to help, but I'm (generously) a rust novice. I worry I'll waste their time with bad PRs.

Why do instances not run ads?

It probably goes against the philosophy or whatever of FOSS or Lemmy itself, but why not be a little evil so that you can actually sustain yourself? Donations can bring us far, but small non-intrusive ads can be a bliss in the skies for the people actually hosting the instance. Especially if there are millions of users uploading...

bilb,
@bilb@lem.monster avatar

Would ads be of much value on a lemmy instance? Almost nobody using lemmy would not be using an ad blocker. And if an instance integrated ads, other instances would have access to their communities without ads unless you do some kind of "native content" scheme where some of your posts are ads which I don't think anyone would tolerate.

I could see maybe sponsorships with locally hosted shout-outs in the sidebar working for some people.

bilb,
@bilb@lem.monster avatar

I don't know why someone would be suspicious of you just for asking this question, but it's probably impossible to know that with any accuracy without intolerable user data leaks.

I haven't seen a community for this yet. Happy to take it on on my lemmy instance!

This is all well and good, but in practical terms it means that if your account is not on beehaw then you should divest your involvement with beehaw communities because it is less likely to remain federated with your home instance. Which may be what the beehaw community wants, from the sound of it.

Suikoden I and II are required playing for jrpg fans!

But emulation as a suggestion alone is good. You have access to so much of a field of human creativity if you're okay copying the bits to your drive.

Edit: I feel obligated to say that I also like the other suikoden games. My rank is

II

V

I

III

IV

But I still enjoyed IV.
