Hear me out Sweetie, here in the motherland, we call it a feature, not a security flaw:

People say tech artists have a lot of advantages when they want to make indie games, it’s true:

  • we can work on gameplay demo and we are good at hitting visual targets;

  • if the game needs some procedural elements or complex animation states, we can help;

  • many tech artists can do art tasks and deliver a quick cutscene;

  • engine tools and productivity, again we are friends;

But there are things we have very little idea about: networking stuffs, we work with them maybe once every year.

My experience with server-side folks: 50% of the time it is colliders and nav mesh; the other 50% it is root motion and animation syncing.

I predict there will be wall-to-wall coverage of US campus protests and police arrests:

  • discredit US democracy and free speech protection while also justifying China’s national security laws;

  • showcase US police brutality and while also justifying China’s use of force on Hong Kong student protesters.

  • blame US on ongoing Gaza wars and ethnic resentment, while also promoting China’s strongman approach to “ethnic unity” and its belt-and-road policy.

Pro tips on choosing VPN for TikTok:

  • Don’t use the Chinese/HongKong ones, because we can’t access TikTok (the international app that you currently use) neither.

  • Don’t use any commercial VPN neither because they will 100% monetize your traffic in some way.

  • Don’t build your own VPN on popular VPS host neither because TikTok will limit your account actions (like not being able to follow creators) due to your traffic looking like an automated bot.

But Happy Thursday!

Looks like this might be the 21st century physics breakthrough? How is this possible with normal sunlight though?

Just another example of how good products and good people usually can’t survive in the big company ecosystem where the awful numbers people elbow out every other concern including “making a decent product that does the thing we were famous for” https://www.wheresyoured.at/the-men-who-killed-google/

bitinn,
@bitinn@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@sinbad I will make an addendum: usually “money people” get to their level of influence and control, solely because top management, and by extension, boardroom members, enable them to overwrite others.

The TikTok “divest in 6-month” or “face App Store delist” regulation is included in the Ukraine, Israel, Taiwan aid bill.

Now that it passes both congress, clearly Biden will sign it.

So get your VPN ready kids, I don’t think Bytedance will agree to a sale unless it creates a TikTok USA.

@tootapp you might be aware of this but toot app on iOS currently doesn’t stop the video media after user swipe left to exit a link. TikTok/YouTube for example seems to play forever as background video, even when you have killed the app. (almost like a podcast or music).

Dear , what’s the default monitor(s) resolution in your office?

For larger studio, take the average among your colleagues and round to the nearest.

Dear , what’s the default monitor(s) resolution at your home, for gaming purpose?

Take the average among your monitors and round to the nearest. Pick “others” if you game almost exclusively on handhelds.

@benbradley sure but this one is for fun, not market research 😀

You're a serious PC gamer: you have a 4k screen, an extra wide screen, 120Hz or HDR. You're a serious console game: you have a 4k monitor. You do art. Your AAA studio: "Best I can do is Dell 60Hz full HD"

I recently tried out a few built-in browsers from various phone makers, in particular, those pre-installed on low/mid-tier mobiles.

Let me be brutally honest, if you think Chrome or Safari are the “worst things ever” for the web, you haven’t seen built-in browsers.

On some of them, you can’t even find the url bars anymore, it is just a search bar at the top, linked to the highest bidder of your search and history data.

Fuck these phone makers, fuck them for screwing over poor folks.

bitinn,
@bitinn@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

And in China all these devices comes pre-locked, without registering a user account with phone makers and requesting a formal unlock, you risk nullifying the warranty by rooting or unlocking the bootloader yourself.

Why?

Because phone resellers used to bundle more adwares onto devices to scam people, so phone makers take extra steps to lock basic features like installing apps via USB.

It is pure madness if you ever need to run a device lab.

They say real estate is a good investment, but that's only really true if you don't have to live in it. If you sell your price increased house, you still need a different price increased place to live.
If you have a second investment property, you can sell it and keep the money.
I'm starting to think that rising house prices mainly benefit the people giving out housing loans, by making them larger.

bitinn,
@bitinn@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@demofox let you in on a secret: many tech ceo and investors have thought of themselves as the David vs the real estate/banking Goliath.

These people would be in real estate/banking business if their connections and resources allow for it, but they are nobody in those circles, so tech becomes their battleground.

I wonder the slow demise of quality engineering, as shown by some in aero and vehicle sector, is the long-term fallout from tech industry's golden promise:

  • Quality engineering took too long, they work in 5-10 year lifecycle, tech can do better than that!

  • By delivering in 1-3 year, tech has redefine the term "high growth" and "product-market fit"; bugfixes can come later.

  • As tech industry move to disrupt traditional sectors, their lack of engineering standard struggles and cost lives.

bitinn,
@bitinn@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

It was all fun and games, we know the algorithmic marketplace fucked up, or the social network data center blown up, or the launch day service hiccups:

  • Losing a few days of user growth and revenue won't kill a company.

  • At worst, you issue an apology letter and run some retrospection in-house.

  • Once it starts killing actual people and destroying actual lives;

  • Once tech industry's "software-eats-the-world" engineering boots meet the real-world ground;

  • The golden pyramid falls apart.

I'm in the process of completely redesigning my blog. I used Jekyll and tbh I never liked it - I often needed to use raw html for some stuff anyway. Now transitioning to a pure html+css+js site, like some caveman :)

@lisyarus you probably don’t need it but do give Zola a try, at least you could save some time doing your own styling and templates.

Only Apple is bold enough to always capitalize the term “Time Machine”, simply because they have a piece of legacy software named that.

aeva, to random
@aeva@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

Imagine if you had a real time machine, but it has all of the quirks of archive.org's The Wayback Machine. You go back in time to meet, idk, Abraham Lincoln, but you happened to pick a less mainstream moment of his life and his face is just a broken jpg.

bitinn,
@bitinn@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@aeva I am sure if you wait for a few seconds in the real time machine the picture of Abraham Lincoln will accumulate and denoise itself.
