bobthened,

At the same time Israel was releasing Palestinian “prisoners” (largely children and largely imprisoned for petty crimes like throwing stones) they were capturing and imprisoning from the West Bank (where there is no Hamas) roughly the same number of people as they were releasing in Gaza.

bobthened,

That doesn’t really matter though. The point still stands regardless of if it’s explained by money literally disappearing into a hole or huge rounding errors and inefficiencies in their accounting systems.

They are still allowed much much more leniency with much larger amounts of money (aren’t they aren’t ever properly held to account for it) than regular people are allowed with comparatively tiny amounts of money.

bobthened,

Plenty of centrist liberals support Israel’s “war against Hamas”. US president Joe Biden and the Democratic party for example.

bobthened,

You do know that’s not what shire means, right?

Like the kind of political YouTuber that doesn’t actually know what they’re talking about.

That’s pretty accurate. She claims to be left wing, and a fan of Bernie Sanders but she frequently repeats alt-right talking points and conspiracy theories. She does a lot of that thing that a lot of right-wing online personalities do in paying lip service towards being a centrist “I MaKe FuN oF bOtH sIdEs”, but really ending up making the right look far more reasonable than the left the majority of the time. She’s also good friends with the conservative pick-me YouTuber Blaire White.

She became popular around the time of gamergate largely (imo) because she says a lot of the things those types like — makes a lot of videos ridiculing feminists etc — and is a somewhat conventionally attractive woman. So gamers^TM can convince themselves they don’t hate all women and all women don’t hate them because here’s one who agrees with them and “she [supposedly] isn’t even right wing”.

bobthened,

I’m using it right now. Working just fine so far, exactly the same as the reddit version, and I haven’t been asked to pay $20 for it.

bobthened, (edited )

Meanwhile, the government can only offer a poultry paltry 6% pay increase to junior doctors.

bobthened,

Literally nothing lol. It’s just a right wing conspiracy theory based on fear of change.

Why is youtube recommending conservative "talking points" to me?

Hi, I am a guy in early thirties with a wife and two kids and whenever I go on youtube it always suggests conservative things like guys dunking on women, ben shapiro reacting to some bullshit, joe rogan, all the works. I almost never allow it to go to that type of video and when I do it is either by accident or by curiosity. My...

bobthened, (edited )

My interest are gaming, standup comedy, memes, react videos, metalurgy, machining, blacksmithing,

Because a lot of the type of guys who like seeing those stupid conservative videos also like many of the same things as you. Gaming^™ is well known to have a problem with the alt-right, react videos have a very similar structure to conservative “libs destroyed with fact and logic” types of videos, and finally a lot of conservatives like to think of themselves as an old fashioned man’s-man so they enjoy things like metalwork and other typical “manly” careers.

bobthened,

Yes. With Ron the fascist DeSantis deliberately alienating Trump supporters I think it’s safe to say that his arm of the party has shifted from a leopards eating faces party to a jaguars eating leopards and faces party.

I think what needs to reform is the ecosystem of working

Millions of us, everyday of every hour, are working a multitude of hours at different periods in the day. All so that we, can prop and propel the few lives that are on top. The few who’s lives we’re both knowingly and unknowingly sustaining. Who’s lives that have children that we’re indirectly supporting through our...

bobthened,

Agreed. Billionaires should not exist (100% wealth tax above 9,999,999), and all companies should be owned by the employees so everyone gets an equal share of the profits.

bobthened, (edited )

Fuck off, stop posting this hateful bullshit.

It’s not a genocide, that’s not how genocide works

He talks about doctors sterilising people, as if they’re doing it forcibly — but they aren’t. The surgery that transgender people can get is entirely optional, they aren’t being forced to do it. In fact a lot of transgender people don’t undergo any surgery — and the ones that do choose to have to be fully informed of all the risks just like anyone else undergoing any other kind of surgery. Additionally trans people can and do have children, some because they never underwent the surgery that would make them unable to (remember Thomas Beatie en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Beatie ?) and others through things like adoption or surrogacy.

Finally, the idea that they can’t feel sexual pleasure is just categorically untrue medicalnewstoday.com/…/transgender-women-after-su…

bobthened, (edited )

They aren’t.

6 examples of a trans person also being a sex pest doesn’t mean that all of them are, and it certainly doesn’t mean that granting legal protection and freedom to transgender people causes women to get assaulted/harassed by them. Do you know how many examples of cis men being sexual predators we could find in just a few minutes of googling things like “pastor arrested” or “republican senator arrested”. Does that mean we should start making it illegal for people to identify as republicans in public? should we make it illegal for the clergy to get anywhere near children? Maybe we should, but you won’t see any of these “wont somebody please think of the children” types calling for either of those, even though they’re clearly bigger threats statistically.

bobthened,

I’ll stop using ad block when YouTube stops making me watch an advert at the beginning of the video and then two unskippable ads one minute into the video.

bobthened, (edited )

Don’t both sides this, this isn’t a both sides situation. I’m sure that there are some pro-choice people who do genuinely believe that life begins at conception and a foetus is equal to a living child but a) They are just categorically scientifically wrong, so it doesn’t matter what they think, and b) they are not the ones who are leading the charge for changing the laws, the ones in power who are pushing the narrative are doing it to distract their voting base from actual problems.

Besides if they genuinely cared for the babies then there are many many other things they could get animated about that would actually make a positive impact on the lives of children, like more affordable/free healthcare, more paid maternity and paternity leave, and better social programmes to help struggling parents etc. They’re just mad about it because it’s the issue of the year that right-wing media told them to be mad about – they haven’t actually thought about it much beyond that.

And even if they weren’t wrong about the science (which to be clear they definitely are) it doesn’t matter, because banning things like abortions doesn’t stop people wanting them and getting them — it just makes people do them in unsafe ways (ways that are much more likely to cause the death of the prospective mothers). If the religious right actually wanted to reduce the number of abortions then they should be pushing for thing like; better sex education, easier access to affordable/free contraception, the removal of “abstinence only” teaching practices — things which have been conclusively proven to reduce abortion rates!

It’s not a single website like Reddit or twitter. It’s a network of interconnected ”instances”. You can view and access and comment on any of the content from any one of them from from any other of them. So you only need one account. You can even subscribe to communities that are based on a difference instance from you.

For example I am commenting here from an account on feddit.uk but this post is on Lemmy.world

bobthened,

Finally some good policies from Starmer's Labour party. (He's clearly trying to steal the Green party voters, but if he can get those things done then it doesn't matter which party did them).

We have the technology, it already exists and is in many cases clearly superior in terms of efficiency and running cost to the non-renewable method. It just needs to be built, and he's correct that NIMBY councils are one of the biggest reasons why it hasn't been built yet.

bobthened,

No-one said he is a Nazi, just that he's a fascist. There are multiple different flavours of fascism – it isn't all literally shooting people in the head and ordering thousands of people into death camps, it can be more subtle and insidious than that.

Also worth mentioning that fascism generally doesn't start with the ethnic cleansing and mass murder, it starts with things like; scapegoating minorities, being overly tough on crime, and peddling misinformation. It takes quite a few years for the fascists to gain enough power to be able to enact the kind of policies that are generally pretty unpopular among normal people.

‘A sense of betrayal’: liberal dismay as Muslim-led US city bans Pride flags (web.archive.org)

In 2015, many liberal residents in Hamtramck, Michigan, celebrated as their city became the first in the United States to elect a Muslim-majority city council. They viewed the power shift and diversity as a meaningful rebuke of the Islamophobic rhetoric of then Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s campaign. This...

bobthened,

The vast majority of religious people are ideologically conservative though.
