So Dropbox is doing the two things every big tech company is doing:

  1. Laying off workers
  2. 'Moving into AI’

Could it not? I like Dropbox just to sync my files in the background and leave it at that.

I don't think people are realising the danger the Fediverse is in.

The only thing stopping corporations and VCs taking over this place is that the Fediverse is spread out on many different servers, which makes it very difficult to purchase.

If most of the Fediverse ends up on mastodon.social, which is now a strong possibility, there will be nothing to stop most of it being sold to Musk or Zuckerberg or whoever.

The bigger mastodon.social becomes, the more likely a buyout is to happen.

@feditips @donmelton Nah I am not worried. That’s surprising to come from this account. One can always move server. And other instances can defederate it. I am also pretty convinced that Eugen working on principles here. It’s a gGMBH for a reason.

    Confession: I have been on that Other Site for the last few hours talking about Tucker Carlson and Don Lemon because ... well, this is a good example of why I do miss search here. I want to see what people are saying; I want to know the latest reporting; and, yes, I want to quote-tweet NYTimes Pitchbot. Now it's OK if the community of Mastodon decides it doesn't want to be a key place for news but I'd regret that. And I'm not speaking so much as a journalist but as news user.
