BREAKING: Apartheid tool has thoughts on how voting ought to work.

MarcinW,

@fifilamoura @liztai @ct_bergstrom do it like most of Europe does - provide free IDs to all citizens (the fact that in US you got to pay is ridiculous) and a time off (or day off) for voting.
Solutions already exist. You just got to be less stubborn in ignoring the rest of the world. ;)

@bobpony never stopped using it in the first place.

Poland: we hate Russia. They’re attacking Ukraine. But we’re not going to arm Ukraine any more because our farmers don’t like it that they’re exporting grain.

Do I have that right?

MarcinW,

@jon more like: elections are in less than a month. Farmers demand something. The governing party yields for votes as even a single-digit percentage can decide if they get a third term or not. The other social groups were already "bribed" in some ways (free laptops for kids, cheap fuel, lower electricity prices, lower interest rates, bonus pension, etc. - all within electoral campaign, often thanks to political officers in (partially-)state-owned companies).

In one media article after another we read about how Threads and Bluesky are "decentralized social media platforms." Guess what, you are not "decentralized" if you only have one "centralized" server.

Can we please stop giving and credit for being platforms when all they have done is announce the intention to actually someday be decentralized. Both are currently entirely corporate platforms.

MarcinW,

@mastodonmigration Neither Bluesky, Threads nor any other social media has "only one 'centralized' server". They always have multiple servers spread in multiple locations (e.g. facebook has 15 known datacenter locations, each one having thousands of servers, and that's before we look into CDNs and alike).

It's impossible to operate a centralized social media at scale.

The city of Pontevedra 🇪🇸 is car-free for almost 20 years.

The results👇

🌬Clean Air
🚶🏻‍♀️Zero Traffic fatalities
👂🏼Silence

And the mayor has been re-elected 4x since.

video/mp4

MarcinW,

@dmoser Pontevedra's traffic-free zone is about 500 meters across, while the city itself is 3km wide. Also: 300 meters from Town Hall there's a 2-lane National Road N-550 passing through, and just 150 meters further the AP-9 highway is cutting Chamusca district from the rest of the city.

So not only it isn't "car-free", majority of it isn't "car-free" and it doesn't even have a proper bypass.

Car-free city centres are fairly common here in Europe, so it doesn't seem like anything special.

Noone outside of cryptobros/VC funds wants anything to deal with Web3.0/4.0/5.0.

The app updating its branding to #X prompted me to open it for the first time in ages. What struck me is quite how much of Twitter (individuals and institutions) is all still there, tweeting away like it’s 2021. For all the and articles flapping over how much the site is in decline, you wouldn’t know it from my feed over there.

https://www.bbc.com/worklife/article/20230731-why-twitters-rebrand-to-x-feels-shocking-to-users

MarcinW,

@philharris Yep, same here - pretty much only scientists I followed left the platform. Everyone else, including people in my field (software development) stay and actively post as if nothing would have happen.

It feels like a crazy time capsule.

I think that those saying Twitter/X will never die were right after all.

Welcome all the new followers :)

I see that the short-form update is something you enjoy, so I'll try to continue.

My sources are various Telegram channels (mostly on Russian side, but I got a good share of Ukrainian as well). I have a limited understanding of spoken Ukrainian and Russian, but cannot read cyrillic, so deepl.com is my tool of trade.

MarcinW, to Ukraine

We are 1 month 3 weeks into .

Thus far there wasn't a single location where Ukrainians would break through the first line of Russian reinforced emplacements.

In fact: There isn't a place where was even forced to fight for their first line. Fights are only going on the front lines which are getting pushed back and forth.

Bakhmut - still strong in RU hands.
Avdiivka - looks worse than before the c.off.
Wagner gone, but no breakthrough.

It ain't looking good...

MarcinW,

Geolocated, for posterity

MarcinW,

's soldiers report that today Ukrainians started using US-provided . And not just for few individual strikes, but rather en-masse, combined with the strikes from HIMARS against more heavily armoured assets.

approached from the East, but RU destroyed several armoured vehicles stopping offensive.

Today afternoon UA also captured ruins of (confirmed by both: RU and UA sources), but without much hard cover left after arty strikes.

MarcinW, (edited )

2023-07-28

  1. Ukraine made a few long-range attacks with either S-200 or S-300 converted for ground-attack. At least 2 strikes on , one shot-down, one hitting target at 19:03 local time. Another strike on Azovsky District.
  2. Significant UA losses near , push seems to be stopped.
  3. (capped yesterday) is being reinforced.
  4. Slow progress in (south of ) - RU turn village into rubble, but still hold the North part
MarcinW,

2023-07-29

  1. UA makes another push on (pre-war population: 512) taking over most of the village by the night of 29/30 July. Heavy losses on both sides.
  2. UA made an unsuccessful push for , but still holds arty. advantage, area ~7km wide east of village is no man's land.
  3. counterattacked near - regained some of the territory lost over the previous 2 days (unknown how much). itself remains in UA hands.
MarcinW,

For some added context - here's a map of the region near with the population (blue) of the key villages on the way to , Russian defensive lines (black), the outline of three key villages (thin red) and locations of a known UA strikes 💥.

While fighting for Robotyne is fierce it's likely to be nothing compared to - line. But even before reaching it expect heavy battle in . Long way to go for before .

MarcinW, (edited )

2023-07-30 - 2023-08-03

  1. reported to be captured by UA, though situation around the village remains uncertain.
  2. was mostly calm until today's UA push today, but reportedly it didn't achieve any success.
  3. RU made offensive in North, near - captured some area, but a lot of fog of war.
  4. Image 1 - Reservoir from UA side. Still unsuitable for offensive.
  5. Image 2 - Polish KTO seen for the first time in Ukraine
MarcinW,

2023-08-04

  1. Ukraine made a breakthrough from , pushing RU behind railway line going South from . Similar push was attempted North from the city, but without success.
  2. UA hit Ropucha-class landing ship in a port of (Krasnodar Krai) with a naval drone (widely publicised news)
  3. Around an hour ago UA made another strike on bridge, alarms and gunshots heard. Results unknown.

An image from recorded video of an Ukrainian drone approaching Ropucha-class landing ship.
Damaged Ropucha-class pulled by a tug

MarcinW,
  1. UA made another near , this time directing the attack towards . Today marks the first time I see RU source openly speak that UA is expected to break through the frontline and into bypassing Robotyne itself. RU's 116th Motorized Rifle Brigade is mostly killed off with remains surrendering to Ukraine
  2. RU reported multiple aerial drone attacks on Crimea, claim all were destroyed
MarcinW,

@ 3. latest report from Crimean authorities: "After the explosion, a fire started in the area of the Crimean bridge" (expect more in the news reports tomorrow during the day).

MarcinW, (edited )

Ukraine released video of the night attack - it was against oil tanker "Sig" (cyrillic "Сіг") passing through the straight.

UA sources claim "if they won't let us export our grain, we won't let them export their oil"

No reports of oil spill yet.
