@rolle I hear you. Sometimes you just gotta vent. Take care of yourself so you can take care of them. ✌️

Practical solutions to the "don't share this on mastodon" problem:

  1. Include an image in the post, so mastodon doesn't fetch a link preview (you can do this yourself)
  2. Serve static assets from static files, not your app server (sys admins can do this)
  3. Mastodon adds some staggered delay to the open graph fetch (likely simple, but a dev needs to do it)
  4. The origin embeds the link preview and peers just use that (the difficult but correct solution, but gargron needs to agree to it)

@jenniferplusplus This is still my top blog post by far. There’s obviously a lot of interest in how this works. I really just wanted to know why some music sites showed an embedded player and others didn’t. It got out of hand. 😅

If you've ever found yourself missing the "good old days" of the , what is it that you miss? (Interpret "it" broadly: specific websites? types of activities? feelings? etc.) And approximately when were those good old days?

No wrong answers — I'm working on an article and wanted to get some outside thoughts.

@box464@mastodon.social avatar

@molly0xfff A smaller web. It was fine if your post or website wasn't visible or even findable by masses of individuals - that wasn't the point. It was discovery and community once you found your spot. Enjoying the discussions in front of you. Today, we must consume everything all the time all at once and be infuriated if we can't.

My brain decided to bring up this memory for no reason today. Cereal box records. Back in the day, kid cereals would add cardboard records on the back of their boxes. You could cut them out and play them on any normal record player. The grooves were made with thin plastic and songs were pretty short.

Sound was horrible. But fun.

I've got some thoughts about how the tech world ignores the needs of users with cognitive disabilities like dementia. Hit me hard this week.

There are degrees of dementia. Some people live with mild or moderate forms for years and deserve respect, dignity and as much freedom as we can offer them. That includes access to the internet.

Social media sites offer plenty of parental supervision firewalls for safeguarding children, but to protect a parent that needs the same, you have to lie about their age (which makes birthday announcements on Facebook quite interesting).

I'm not sure I can even do that much longer because at some point my parent will have been on that site for a total number of years over what is considered a "child".

Don't preach to me about Facebook - it's an important social interaction that allows them to connect with family and friends - I'm not taking that away.

There needs to be a caretaker role that can be applied to an account. And other safeguards in place as well that right now I have to do manually.

There have been some scattered discussions I've seen over the past year that mention that @pfefferle's WordPress ActivityPub plugin federates their blog posts out as an as:Note, and that the only reason this is done is because Mastodon only treats as:Note (and as:Question) as a first-class object and relegates anything else to a fallback handler that takes a short snippet of the content, and shows a link back to the original source, thus losing any in-app benefits (boosts, replies, etc.)

Whether this is actually true or not, I do not know. So that's why I'd like to ask Mattias — or anybody else with some context — here.

For reference:

  • as:Article: Represents any kind of multi-paragraph written work.
  • as:Note: Represents a short written work typically less than a single paragraph in length.
  • as:Page: Represents a Web Page.

I have also noticed that Lemmy, perhaps out of principle, sends out an as:Page for new generated content, and only the replies federate out as as:Note. It has unfortunately led to some assertions that Lemmy's federation is "broken", even though it is arguably not the case.

@nutomic, care to weigh in?

I don't even blame Mattias for opting to send everything out as as:Note.

End of the day right now it doesn't matter how Mattias or Nutomic represent their higher-level collection of data, because Mastodon is the largest implementor and neither they — nor anyone else I know of, for that matter — treat anything that's not as:Note or as:Question specially.

But that ought to change. The question is how, but this WG is not at the point where we start throwing around decrees and making up standards.

What's important to me right now is what the landscape looks like right now, and why that is the case.

N.B. The discussion here will eventually make its way to online real-time discussion at one of the future WG meetings.

Well boys, just booked my first flight ever. It will happen on Monday.

I’m kinda nervous 😅 I’m not afraid of dying on it, but I’m honestly only scared of…getting sick. That, to me, is a fate worse than death 😵‍💫

@davidbures Make sure to tell the flight assistant it’s your first time flying. You might get wings! 🥳 Happy travels.

Font Awesome raised $721,620 to build an open source library of web components. Their goal was $30,000.

I need to collect my thoughts and put it in a blog post but I'm curious what the community's thoughts are on this because that is not a trivial amount of money.

As a web platform PM working in open source and trying to find ways to get funding for projects...was this good marketing? Is it selling a different solution to what's already out there?

box464,
@box464@mastodon.social avatar

@seaotta By supporting the kickstarter, business and hobbyists alike were able to lock in a drastically reduced price on the annual subscriptions of the Pro products, as well as a lifetime license.

@ChaosKitsune @NumbersCanBeFun love that idea! I had started one for Firefish but didn’t promote it much. Definitely needs someone vetting submissions.
