UK cabinet minister calls shoulder surfer ‘little weirdo’ (www.theregister.com)

In setting the date for the UK’s next general election, prime minister Rishi Sunak this week essentially announced the start of open season for political reporters all hunting for the top scoop of the day by any means necessary. He may need, however, to brief his ministers on basic opsec if he’s going to stop any more...

br3d,

They can vote. The article was saying they just can’t use their veteran cards as proof of identity

br3d,

Windows 11 has better window shadows than Windows 10. That is literally the only improvement I’ve found

Can Trump Really Slam the Brakes on Electric Vehicles? He has vowed to shred President Biden’s E.V. policies and has threatened that “You won’t be able to sell those cars.” (www.nytimes.com)

While a Trump presidency couldn’t slam the brakes on the E.V. transition, it could throw enough sand in the gears to slow it down. And that might have significant consequences for the fight to stop global warming.

br3d,

And you don’t see any link between ditching your ICE car and “Saudi Arabia quits drilling for oil”? Better to ditch your ICE car for no car, of course, but if you HAVE to have one, the smallest EV you can get away with is a step towards stopping that oil drilling. If everyone did it, that drilling would change dramatically

br3d,

More people driving EVs won’t make (oil-based) fuel cheaper. Every person getting off oil makes producing oil-based fuels more expensive, as the economies of scale are reduced.

Go to extremes if that helps picture it: imagine you’re suddenly the only person on Earth driving an ICE car. How much would you be paying for a fill-up, which now involves finding, extracting, shipping and refining fuel just for you: more than today or less than today?

br3d,

I’m not sure people in this thread get the significance of the song. If they don’t remember 1997, they might simply be taking the song title literally

br3d,

Having a car makes it easier because society picks up the externalities and hides the harms that you do. So yes, it’ll feel easier because you’re not seeing the whole picture or paying the real cost

br3d,

Garfield without Garfield was a brilliant idea. This is not only derivative, but also just not very entertaining

br3d,

Imagine owning a big share in an oil company and then being all shocked Pikachu face that they’re not in any way sustainable. Just divest already

br3d,

Oh, I agree. I was deliberately talking in investor terms because it’s people who invest professionally who are being disingenuous here

br3d,

If you ask, some places can do early check-in. You might have to pay for it, because it disrupts their routine

Why does Sync not display some comments?

I’ve posted something today and somehow Sync gives me notifications in my inbox for replies to that post, but when I open the post, it can’t find any. I can interact with them just fine in the inbox and in the browser. But in Sync on the post, the number of replies is shown to be 4, while the comment section states that no...

br3d,

I’ve just tested this and it didn’t work. I think this issue, of posts saying there is 1 comment when there are none, is some sort of Lemmy-wide issue. It drives me crazy, as it’s impossible to know whether posts have a comment or not without looking at each individually.

br3d,

It’s not just Sync, I find. I’ve had this issue with other Lemmy apps yoo

br3d,

Thanks. I’ve never blocked anyone, so it won’t be that. Could be the other thing

Get Better Anaerobic Stats from Runs (lemmy.world)

I consistently have a lack of anaerobic load in my Garmin training load. I did a track run today trying to work on intense intervals. I was hoping to get to the end and have more anaerobic effect than aerobic. Is there something I should be doing differently in my runs? I was under the impression that the rest phase between run...

br3d,

Are your heart rate zones set correctly? One reason I ask is that they sometimes reset themselves spontaneously on my watch. But either way, if they’re set at a level where you can’t spend time in the anaerobic zone…

Google Search is getting even worse for independent sites (www.theverge.com)

In February, HouseFresh managing editor Gisele Navarro called out publishers like BuzzFeed and Rolling Stone as some of the culprits that publish content about air purifiers despite a lack of expertise — but Google rewards these sites with high rankings all the same. The result is a search results page filled with SEO-first...

br3d,

Have a look at marginalia.nu - it’s like a return to the old days

If You Hate Density, Maybe Don’t Live in A City (Oh the Urbanity!) (www.youtube.com)

When you argue for housing reform to legalize denser development in our cities, you quickly learn that some people hate density. Like, really hate density, with visceral disgust and contempt for any development pattern that involves buildings being tall or close together.

br3d,

And as long as they don’t go and live miles from where they work and shop, then drive back and forth every day, putting the danger and pollution onto other people

The Welsh Government is appeasing populism over 20mph limits (bylines.cymru)

The Welsh Government has clearly signalled that it’s about to make major changes to the way its 20mph default speed limit on urban roads is implemented. The new First Minister and Welsh Labour leadership have said they “hold their hands up” and that guidance “has to be corrected”....

br3d,

What’s odd is why Labour are doing this. Sunak has made it clear that he’s “on the side of drivers”. Being pro-driver is kinda Tory these days. Not something you’d expect Welsh Labour to be all over

br3d,

And we all pay for this. Not in some vague, notional sense: a substantial chunk of your water bill literally goes towards cleaning up after farmers

br3d,

I wonder if my colleagues have picked up on the fact that when I start an email “Dear-” rather than “Hi-”, it means I’m annoyed with them

br3d,

These companies make and sell the things you buy. Pretending it’s nothing to do with consumers is so disingenuous

br3d,

Yes, a lot of people buy tobacco and so have a role in that industry’s harmful practices. And no, nobody buys asbestos.

br3d,

Yes. The “Cyclists don’t use cycle lanes” line also comes right from the angry right list of grievances. If there’s a cycle lane and people aren’t using it, it’s self-evidently not good enough. And this is hardly surprising when most cycle lanes are cheap afterthoughts that increase danger and inconvenience
